Greetings all,

I'm fairly new to shooting, currently own a S&W 9mm.

I'm pretty sure I'm going to pick up an M&P 15-22. It seems like something I'd enjoy and my son can enjoy as well.

Besides the rifle, ammo, eye and ear protection, what else should I get?

I've taken a safety class and will be taking a CWP class this weekend. I've got a friend with a daughter about my son's age and they are going to have an instructor do a gun safety class for our kids as well.

Any input would be great.

Targets are handy....unless you do what we used to do , "back in the day"
our shooting was done at a garbage dump and afforded plenty of bottles and cans for targets.

Yep sounds to me like you have all the essential gear...i would add a breech flag...either bought or made. Range officers like to see a breech flag.
A little lube (for the rails on the bolt)
Perhaps make or purchase a barrel nut tool...which may or may not be an essential piece of kit depending or the barrel nut.

Really you have safety equipment and your son and ammo...thats all you need for fun and bonding.

A short piece of weed whacker string will pass as a "empty chamber/breech" flag in most instances. Nice bright color and shows the firearm chamber to be empty.

Cleaning kit.....A bore snake and a drinking straw (to go over the ejector so it does not get snagged) a bit of lube/gun oil. Use oil/lube to clean the bolt and chamber of the dirt build-up, but make sure to wipe clean. The only part of the bolt that needs any oil to function are the guide rails that the bolt rides on..even then only a little bit. Too much oil just attracts gunk.
Many people use a dental pick to clean the nooks and crannies. Personally, i use a porcupine quill, sharp enough to remove stuff but not harsh enough to damage or scratch anything.

Eye ear protection, gun(s), ammo, cleaning kit, gloves.

Amazon has packs of pretty nice targets for real cheap that I've bought and like a lot.

The following is from another thread & posted by Lon... Majorlk. I agree 100% with him.

- Separate the two receivers
- remove the BCG (bolt carrier group)
- Clean the barrel and chamber, either with the traditional cleaning rod, brush and patches or a BoreSnake. Put a drinking straw over the ejector to prevent snagging it.
- clean the inside of the upper receiver. A baby bottle brush works well for this.
- blow out the lower receiver with 90 psi compressed air. IT IS NOT NECESSARY TO REMOVE/DISASSEMBLE THE FCG (fire control group, it trigger assembly).
- clean the bolt face making sure to remove all powder debris from around the extractor.

As for lubrication, a single drop of CLP or similar on the bolt latch, a drop of CLP on either side of the bolt carrier rails and a very small drop on the trigger and hammer pins is all that's necessary. It is not necessarily to put anything extra on either the bolt body or the upper receiver interior except what's left of the CLP from cleaning.

When using a bore snake, I put a few drops of solvent on the cloth prior to the brushes & put several drops of CLP after the brushes. The long tail wipes it mostly dry, which is what you want. As said above, I use picks to get into all those nooks & crannies. If you remove the barrel, that area is much easier to clean. Always remember, if you remove the barrel or flash hider, use a barrel vise to clamp the barrel. Never clamp the receiver & exert pressure, as you will damage the gun.

I'm a new shooter also and I've found several places online where you can print free targets. Of course they are not very big, but fun for backyard shooting.
