Dampening sound through receiver extension
I am a new owner of a 15-22 Sport and finally got a chance to try it with my Innovative Arms Apex suppressor. I am pleased with the performance but I notice that a lot of the action sound is transmitted back to the shooter through the hollow receiver extension (what would be the buffer tube in an AR-15). I guess I am hearing the bolt striking the face of the receiver extension and it seems like there should be a way to deaden the sound.
Before I bought my suppressor I paid a visit to Innovative Arms (they are here in my home state) and got a chance to demo their integrally suppressed 15-22. I noticed then that I could hear more action sound that I expected. The owner said that some folks stuff a rag into the receiver extension. I wonder if it would be effective to drill a small hole in the tube and squirt in some of the expanding foam insulation.
Has anyone done this or anything like it?

You can pull the "stopper" out the back end and put "whatever" in the hollow tube......expanding foam may cause it to crack....I would not use it.

If you do try it, I would suggest using minimal expansion foam to avoid cracking it.

I don't doubt maybe some part of what you are hearing is transmitted thru the receiver, but the truth of the matter is, the action on a semi-auto makes noise. No way around that.
With a suppressor, all of a sudden you hear things you've never heard before... such as the action. Put your suppressor on a bolt gun, and you wont hear the action, of course, and the gun will be MUCH quieter than the 15-22. It is so quiet, if you pay attention you can hear the springs in the fire control group.
My suggestion is to leave the 15-22 alone. IMO, you will never remove enough of the sound of the action to make any huge difference. If it bothers you too much, buy a CZ bolt gun. By not getting their integrally suppressed gun, you now have the flexibility to move the suppressor among different guns. While you are at it, get you a threaded Buck Mark too.

Bingo!
If you cant handle this noise, how the heck would you handle an unsupressed 22?
Try shooting a sub 2000 or vector. Then rethink your concerns on the noise of the 15-22 please.
Bolt action may be an option!

Thanks to all who responded, especially my fellow South Carolinian Mike, from whom I learned that the receiver extension has a stopper. I might stuff a rag in there to see if it does any good.
I am aware that action noise is a factor when running a suppressor on a semiauto. I have two different pistol hosts and each sounds a little different. I also have a Rimfire bolt action rifle with a threaded barrel and I certainly accept the fact that the 15-22 is not going to be as quiet.

I filled mine with polystyrene packing peanuts, works a treat!

I definitely hear a clunk in the stock/tube with every shot on my 15-22 sport, it's pretty annoying.

I wonder if you put a thin foam pad at the back of the reciever if the bolt would cycle?
Imo it would cut out the noise alot more.
Need a buffer of some sort

No not the action noise, but I could feel and hear a horrible hollow sounding clonk every time I squeezed the trigger and the polystyrene packing peanuts really help.

Yeh I agree it's quite a clunky gun. Different from any other 22 semi I've fired. I don't find it annoying just different. I put it down to it being polymer

You could pack the tube with duct putty. I've used it in synthetic stocks on breakbarrel air rifles to deaden the "twang" of the spring. It also improved the balance of those rifles, which tended to be front heavy. It's dense so it will add weight but I can't imagine it would be enough to be very noticeable. You can find the stuff in the electrical dept in Home Depot or Lowes

Cut a piece of innertube that matches the shape of the plastic at the back of the bolt rails. Put that between the plastic pieces and see a huge drop in sound and felt snap.
Polish the bolt rails for better performance and less noise too.
