Default Reliability

Your thoughts please. I took my new mp15-22 for its second range visit yesterday and put 360 rounds of cci mini mag through it. I had 240 perfect cycles. And my sig 522 owning mate put 140 rounds through it. Much to his amusement and to my disappointment he had 2 empty cases get trapped by the returning bolt and a light strike. i put the light strike down to the ammo. Not usual with that ammo but will blame that round all the same. Now after putting 500 rounds though it I have 4 of the empty cases getting crushed by the bolt. I suppose not bad. But not good compared to my mates sig 522 or my own walther/hk mp5. Which has had 2 ftf in about 5000 rounds. Compared to some of the posters on here recently my one seems good. What are your thoughts on this. Is this quite normal for these guns ?

Never had one FTE, never had one round crushed by the bolt, have had FTF but generally they seem ammo related.

In a recent batch of Eley ammo, i had a new club member using our CZ bolt action try to send a round down 5 times...i took it off of him and gave it to the Hiperfire24C and it still never went...there was literally no primer at all. The latest batch of Eley Sport (our club ammo) has been horrendous for FTF...Our clubs Rugers and CZ's have had real issues with this ammo. My 24C has dealt well with the poor quality of this batch, My Anschutz has never missed a beat, with any type of ammo, ever!

I think FTF, misfeeds/leading to FTE are par for the course with some semi-autos. However, this latest batch of 15-22's (you have the sport version right?) seem to be riddled with FTE's.

Very strange and unsettling for new owners.

Both my Sig522 and 15-22 have been remarkably reliable.

No not the new sport. The last of the originals. Which I prefer handguard on. You very rarely have problems with bolt actions I never did with my cz or sako quad. I don't have no problems with my pencil barrelled unremovable bolt semi auto mp5 either or for that matter the gsg 5 I had before that. I thought these guns were meant to be reliable. I will see what happens next time down the range. Try some cci AR tactical

I would say that they are reliable, like i posted i have never had a single FTE. Just a quick question, seeing as though you didn't have any FTE's and your friend did...did he load the mags or did you? the rounds do have to be loaded into the magazine in a staggered fashion...although this is not a hard fast rule, it does help minimise any problems you may have.

Yeh I run him through loading the mags watched him they looked good. Maybe it don't like him aye. It was good to me. Spoke to the guys at riflecraft they said give it a few more weeks they start off a bit aggressive then smooth up. I'm one of them guys that think things should be good to go from the box. But I'm hopeing there right.

Little off topic;

When you removed the flash hider from the Sig522, did you have to support the barrel or just the receiver since it metal and not polymer like the 15-22. I want to shoot mine suppressed and don't want to mess things up

I just put a wrench on it and gave it a smack with a light hammer. Quick sharp smack works a lot better than trying to muscle it off.

Only issue I've had is failure of the last shot bolt hold open when using Blazers (100% fine on CCI Standards).

Not sure I've had a F2F and may have had one FTE... Vaguely remember one when I first got it but since then (and thousands of rounds) it's been well behaved.

My opinion... These rifles are usually excellent in reliability terms, if they're not performing as expected its worth checking everything over and trying do different ammo, mags etc...

Thumbs up

I've been very happy with my 15/22 reliability, even more
amazing to me is how accurate it is right out of the box. At
my age ---66, I'm able to hit 6" hanging plates 5 out of 10
@ 100 yds,offhand. I'm just using the issue sights also. I like
the versatility of using about any type bulk ammo, also. In
55 years it's the most accurate 22 rifle I've had the pleasure
to shoot. Sorry to hear about issues with newer guns, although
I'm sure S&W can make it right. As far as reliability and accuracy
it's like the Russian commander saying to Rambo---
"It is without challenge "

I'm just saying....maybe after your 240 perfect cycles, carbon was beginning to build up in the chamber. 360 rounds seems like a lot for any semi auto .22lr without some cleaning.
