Contour or flute 15-22 barrel? [Mods, pls move to rifles]
Anyone ever thought of contouring or fluting their barrel to take off some weight? I have a 15-22 rifle from about 4 years ago and thinking about it to go as light as possible.

Never thought about it...it's a cost vs benefit thing for me and shaving off a few more ounces (at what is probably a high cost to do so) isn't worth it on an already light gun. Hit the gym bro.

Or buy the performance center model, it is already fluted.

As thin as the standard 15-22 barrel is, the fluting would have to be so shallow as to make the weight savings negligible ... And not worth the effort and expense.

Yes, fluting doesn't look like it will remove much weight, only ~4.5 oz, but you can reduce the barrel od. I have the 16" threaded barrel versions and it looks like turning the barrel down to .500" (between a .670" flange at the muzzle threads and the barrel nut threads) would remove ~10 oz.

Thanks for the feedback. I may have the barrel contoured to remove weight. It's not that expensive. Will it impact accuracy in a 22 LR?

Possibly, perhaps, maybe. Only one way to find out. Keep in mind this is only a 3 MOA gun to start with.

If you decide to have a barrel contoured or fluted I would be very, very selective of whom I choose to do it. It is very easy to impart unnecessary permanent stresses in the barrel during the process which can highly impact the accuracy. I would not consider anyone who is not a well known benchrest gunsmith.

I was going to use ADCO. They seem to get good reviews. Anyone use them for this?
