Your best bet is to pick up a few different brands and try them out to see what feeds and fires best in your rifle.

As a starting point, most of us have had success with CCI Mini-Mags, Winchester Super-X and Federal HV Match ammo. Try any 22LR ammo that has a muzzle velocity of 1200 FPS or higher.

Good luck!

CCI or Blazer. (Also, RWS if you can find it).

Expensive ammo.

Shoot what you can find. 15-22s really aren't fussy.

Some do have issues but they usually need the ejector adjusted and your ammo choice won't fix that...

CCI AR Tactical runs smooth as butter. Even better than CCI Mini Mags.

It is made specifically for the 15-22. I run a bump fire setup and I can mag dump 14 mags in one session without a single glitch. Mini Mags are close but I will get the occasional glitch.

Running 800+ rnds/minute is demanding. Using the 15-22 as originally designed will work with almost any decent .22LR

I buy them and use them for range practice when nothing else is available. They work for me in all my .22 revolvers. HOWEVER...they are very smokey and dirty.

Send them to me, I'll shoot them all day. They will NOT "hurt" your gun. That's ignorant internet nonsense.

Probably best to create a sticky about what ammo to use or shoots well on the M&P 15-22 as the question comes up whenever new owner/ first time shooting rimfire rifles or new to shooting in general.
Below are also some good advice given to a new owner awhile back.
Recommended Brands of 22LR ammo

I just love internet statements like this. I hope they frighten others at the same experience level from buying whatever brand is being maligned. Then more will be available for those of us who know better.

In addition to other brands I've shot more than 5K Thunderbolts in the past year in my 15-22, 10/22s (I have six), Mark IIIs, and SR 22s. They don't lead barrels. They don't misfire any more than other brands in the same category. And I've never paid attention to them being dirty. I clean my guns when I'm done shooting.

Thunderbolts aren't my favorite ammo. But, when my favorite is not available and Thunderbolts are I find them perfectly acceptable.

Odds are the majority of those "personal horror stories" are simply people parroting what some other person has parroted from some other person. Thunderbolts, or any other ammo, "hurting" a 15-22 IS nonsense. Over the past 40+ years I have fired a million rounds of .22 LR and never found ANY brand to "hurt" any of well over a dozen firearms.

But, hey, if it makes you feel better to believe otherwise, have at it.

This... I have found a decent local source for CCI AR Tactical for less than .08 per round and have recently stocked up. Have yet to have a single failure in over 500 rounds...

I feed both my semis m+p15-22 and mp5-22 cci. Minimag and AR tactical. I like it because it's quality ammunition. But both eat any higher velocity ammo really

Norma Tac 22 , in my opinion, is one step above CCI AR Tactical.(nothing wrong with CCI at all) It is very accurate in both 10-22s and the 15-22. It is a bit pricey, but I have been able to get it on sale for $50/500 the last couple of times I bought it.

I hope this post is not to lengthy, but this is most based on my 15-22 and modded 22/44 lite as I love shooting them more then any of my other weapons. It as based on my CZ455 Evolution and my wife's 10/22.

I posted this on another forum, but thought this seem like a good post to post it in as my 15-22 is honestly my favorite weapon I am. Good accuracy and amazingly reliable, just a great fun to shoot.

Ok here we go.

I like to pair my rounds up. Speed, weight and/or profile. So I like to have a Hollow Point and Flat Nose or Rounds Nose.

These are my pairs:

Hyper Velocity:
HP- CCI Velocitor - 40gr - 1435fps
FN- Aguila Interceptor - 40gr - 1470fps

As for the above it pretty simple for me. The Velocitor HP in my opinion is the best all around .22LR on the market. It fast, heavy for a hyper velocity .22lr round, great tech behind it in the Gold Dot tech, amazing knock down power and It is accurate out all my weapons. Hunting, target shooting or self defense in .22LR I just doesn't get better.

The Interceptor FN gives much of the same as the Velocitor does. It just a hair behind in accuracy and consistency to the Velocitor. If you need deeper penetration and if hunting and need to save a bit more meet he Interceptor FN is the one. Lost it the fastest 40gr on the market. These 2 have more energy down range so better knock down power then their light and faster counterparts the Stinger and Supermaxium

In love shooting these 2 out of my 15-22 and 22/45. Good accuracy out of both. The CZ455 is very accurate with them also, But don't shoot them out of it but ever once and blue moon. My wife 10/22 they are good, but not as good as they are out of my 15-22

High Velocity:
HP- TBA
FN- CCI SGB - 40gr - 1250fps

HP- Winchester PowerPoint 42 Max - 42gr - 1320fps
RN- Eley Force - 42gr - 1250fps

At this speed at the moment I have 3 offering that all my .22lr like. I will start with the ones in have been shooting for awhile. The Win PowerPoint 42 Max are boarder line hyper velocity and honestly seem to kick as hard as the Velocitor and Interceptor and are just as accurate. Being a HP it does have quite the stopping power of the Velocitor as it seem to segment, so it losses weight where the Velocitor retains about 98% of its weight. But being a 42gr helps with knock down power and has great energy down range.

The Eley Force is the most accurate and consistent at the 42gr weight and equals my newly found favorite HV round the CCI SGB. The Force at 42gr with round nose and CCI SGB at 40gr with its flat nose are like shooting match grade high velocity rounds. Love the SGB.

I am missing a pair for the SGB in 40gr high velocity hollow point. I been looking at the options and most are a little costly. The RWS HV HP, SK HV HP and Eley New HV HP, but all of these where I have seen them are nearly if not $10 for 50 plus shipping cost. But the ones they really have my eye are the Winchester PowerPoint 40gr 1280fps. As many rave about their accuracy and consistency. If they perform as many say they do, That will give me my hollow point HV round I have been looking for in 40gr.

SubSonic:
HP- Winchester SubSonic 42 Max - 42gr - 1065fps
RN- Eley Contact - 42gr - 1090fps

HP- CCI Suppressor - 45gr - 970fps
RN- Federal Suppressor - 45gr - 970fps

I choose these and no 40gr because they have been as accurate and consistent out my weapons as all the none matched and some matched 40gr I have tested and I have tested a ton of them. Also they carry more energy down range then the 40gr offerings, yep which equates to more knock down power and quieter then the hyper and high velocity rounds. The Win 42 Max and Eley Contact are simply great.

The CCI 45gr version I have shoot about 350 rounds in the last few days and they are simply great, as accurate and consistent again like the 42gr units above as some of the match rounds I have tested. The only ammo that I own that is more consistent is the Center X. They also hold the same amount of energy down rate as the Standard and/or SubSonic 40gr rounds. Another plus is they are quieter even without a suppressor and yes they cycle all my Semi without even one failure not even one. Between the 2 version I have put about 800 rounds down range with 0 issues thru all my Semi Autos. So way not a heavier and quieter round?!!

I really had high hopes for Winchester M22 SubSonic 45gr, but not consistent enough, but great power for SubSonic round.

Competition/Target:
Lapua Center X - 40gr - 1073fps
CCI Standard Velocity - 40gr - 1070fps

I test many of the higher end matched ammo; RWS R50 and Special Match, Lapua Midas +, Eley Match and Edge and of my CZ455 and modded 22/45 light the Center X out performed or performed just as good as the others So Center is my choice for extreme accuracy. Down to a 100 rounds of Center X now ordering more next week if the boss allows me to. With finding CCI SGB and Suppressor ammo I bought a bit of each was unplanned she might so NO wait. The CCI SV is just a accurate and consistent round that will never let you down. Not as consistent as the Center X, but good enough for good target shooting.

Plinking:
CCI AR Tactical - 40gr - 1200fps

AR Tactical choice is easy reliable and consistent with good accuracy. They out performed mini mags in my weapons, maybe because they where kind of design using the 15-22. So they are my goto Plinking and just shooting fun rounds. When I can find them at a good price I always grab some. And they are good enough for hunting if need be.

Sure wish any .22 of any flavor other than Eley and RWS would please return to CT. They are quality match stuff but $10-15/50 rounds sucks. Checked bulkammo.com last night and Federal Blue box cheapest at $58/500, and CCI Mini Mags were $200/1000 Not one box of anything on a Walmart shelf here since Sandy Hook

Look around you can find it cheaper. Bulkammo.com is one of the highest price places to find ammo, ranks up there with Luckygunner.com. Try using ammoseek.com and see what pops up
