Guns & Ammo AR Review
The S&W M&P AR15-22 is the only .22 caliber AR platform that made the cut in their AR Roundup 2016! The M&P 15 Sport II was also one of the 5.56 that made it!

But just think how much safer children in Maryland and Connecticut are with out those "black weapons" in your safes. Odds of a "mass shooting event should approach zero. Joe

Why do people insist on not calling the m+p15-22 an AR. I always thought AR stood for a design. A design of rifle. And the m+p 15-22. Certainly has the design. So because our rifle is not gas operated or doesn't fire a larger calibre that's what makes it a non AR ? Or is it because it's polymer ? Can someone explain please why it's not an AR

Guns & Ammo AR Review
A bit of thread drift...but with you being from across the pond I understand why you don't know the difference. It's a 15-22 with AR ergonomics and similar modularity

My thoughts too... I figured even on a forum section dedicated to that rifle that no one would raise a fuss about it being called an "AR"... Hell, Guns & Ammo included it in their AR Roundup! They even think its an AR!!! I agree with them!

I know it stands for armalite. And do not doubt my firearms knowledge because I'm from the uk. My questions still remain what makes it a non AR ?

It doesn't really matter. Just thought there might be something specific that makes it not a proper AR. I like to think of it as an AR because it's the closest I'm gonna get to one being in the uk. Unless i want one of them straight pull ARs. Which doesn't really do it for me

I refer to my AR 15 and my 15-22 as American Rifles. That is truly what they are. Everyone in the world can see a silhouette of an m16 or an m4 and know where they originated. It was an easy step for liberal antigun news media to twist AR into assault rifle.

The AR-15 is defined as firing an "intermediate" cartridge and while there's latitude in defining what that is it doesn't include the .22 LR. Other reasons I'm sure but the chambering is a key point. If it were just appearance, I've seen AR style pellet guns that mimic the profile pretty well.

True. There's many guns that mimic the profile. Not many with a T bolt charging handle or bolt release button that work. The more powerful round and chambering I get though. Thanks for reply

I used to follow G&A pretty closely, but as they years have passed I have become more convinced that their "Best Of" articles are mainly reports on which manufacturer buys the most advertising from them. Not that the winners are always bad guns, just that they are inevitably the ones advertised out the wazoo.

The 15-22 is an AR "style" rifle. It is not an AR, nor has S&W ever marketed it as such. It does not have the action of an AR and its only similarity to an AR is looks, the same trigger group and some external accessories.
Many will say I am nit picking, but accuracy in nomenclature is important.
