New 15-22 owner and new to this forum
Hello all. After doing a lot of homework, mostly on this forum, I kept coming across one thing that stood out to me. Over and over again I read how much fun these things were to shoot. After trying to talk myself out of it, I took the plunge and bought one.
I got it out to the range yesterday and as advertised, it was a "blast". I was a bit skeptical of what to expect as I also kept reading that they were picky about what type of ammo they liked. I ran nearly 400 rounds of various ammo that I'd stocked up on over the last couple years with only two issues. On the Winchester ammo, there were two failures to feed, both while using the shorty magazine.
Other than that, the rifle ran flawlessly. I look forward to more inexpensive shooting versus what it costs to take the AR to the range for a day. Now, just to decide how to dress it up.

I often see more "issue" threads than positive reviews so thanks for the report. Get some more mags and you'll be set. If you want to start modifying your rifle check out the official picture thread and use the search feature on any mods you are thinking to pursue.

Welcome to your new addiction...
It is nice to hear a positive thread about this wonderful, little enigma of a rifle. You are in good company here, this forum is an excellent source of information, advice and stories regarding the 15-22.
I look forward to seeing what your 15-22 evolves into over the coming months, there are some amazing examples on the picture thread.
Just remember the cardinal rules for 15-22 owners....Do not ever clamp the lower or upper to do any work on the rifle barrel such as flash hider removal...you must clamp the barrel, otherwise you can really mess up your fun.
Do not overlube the rifle...the only real spots that need a light coating are the bolt guide rails and maybe the springs, but i only ever really lube the rails. Keep her relatively clean and that will keep the good times rolling.
Above and the most important rule for any and every 15-22 owner is get as much ammo as you can because you are going to need it...

As has been said by others, the vast majority of firearm owners never go to forums. And of those that do, many do so because they are experiencing issues/problems. So if one was to judge a firearm by what is said on forums you'd think most firearms are problematic.
I've come to realize that is not the case.

I agree with the gentleman that said most owners never visit forums unless they're experiencing a problem. That being said, despite the stove pipe issues that I've had with my 15-22, I love the weapon. It's tons of fun, and once I get that sorted, and a trigger upgrade in place, I'm gonna bet it's gonna be one hell of a steel target rifle.

I'll pass on one of the first(among many) good bits of info I found here after buying my 15-22 and joining S&W Forums.
And is quite a good money saver. When you want to stock up on 25 round mags, look to GunMags Warehouse for the best prices. No affiliation BTW. Just a happy buyer. Smith & Wesson S&W M&P 15-22 22 Long Rifle 25-Round Polymer Factory Magazine On "special" for $12.99, that's the best price I've seen anywhere. Those are the real deal S&W branded ones too. Less than 1/2 the price I've seen most anywhere. As much as I like buying locally, and do often, my LGS wont touch that price. Locally I've seen prices from $25 to $36 for the same exact mags.
Just over the past few months I've acquired 18 of them.

You can still buy those reasonably priced mags. Just put a Tacticool restrictor in each one of them and they are California legal!
Then, when you get tired of the silly bull**** over there and move to Arizona as I did, you just remove the restrictor and you are back in business!!

Definitely informative on here and thanks for the heads up. However from what I understand, the high capacity mags can't be shipped to Ca.

Love my 15-22... Probably have several hundred rounds through it and never have any issues! Great rifle for training and running drills plus a heck of a small game rifle! Like the others have stated, get lots of mags! Have fun!

When you get a few mags. The Mcfadden lightning loader is the best on the marjet imo.
Its heads swap so you can do tons of different brands of mags.

Just following up on this, I bought this loader, an adapter for the 15-22, and an adapter for my Kimber 1911 .22 conversion - total price was around $40, and this thing is amazing. Makes loading mags so much quicker. Took it with me to a Steel Challenge match today, and everyone wanted to know where I got it haha.

You sound as happy as I did when I got mine (recently) I don't know what it is but I was more happier when my 15-22 arrived over my Sport 2. I think it's mostly because I envisioned what I wanted to do with it. Quick question, how did you like those CCI Velocitors?

They ran perfect in my rifle. Obviously a little more punch (I saw your "most lethal round post" so I'm guessing that's what you want) than the rest of what I used but they were flawless. The only ones I had a little trouble with were the Winchesters, and that very well may have been me loading the magazine incorrectly.
All in all it's a fun gun to shoot, now to dress it up! Enjoy yours!

Welcome to this forum and your 15-22 journey. I have spent hours reading what others know or are learning. Most questions I had were already asked, so reading related threads first worked for me. Best advice besides researching the forum is just get to know your gun first before doing anything to it. A search engine for ammo that rates shipping costs is also helpful, rimfire CCI 40 grains. Enjoy your journey.

Oil the whole bolt? No need. The bolt moves on the rails. Make sure the rails have a very light coating of oil. Maybe even the return spring. There is no real harm by putting on a very thin layer of oil on everything....except down the firing pin channel! However the more oil, the more gunk will stick. After 300/400 rounds. Take a look at the bolt, the bolt face is the only place that gathers actual dirt. underneath gets a little blackened but does not collect dirt.
Just make sure that the boltface, feed ramp and breech/chamber are clear of debris. Lightly oil the rails and return spring, if you remove the extractor to clean it maybe a drop on that spring. That is my cleaning regime.

Just picked up my 15-22 MOE this last Friday. Never thought I'd have another .22 I would like as well as my 10-22 Ruger. Well SURPRIZE now I do. Great piece!
