Help with handguard install
i have decided to install a freefloat handguard. Purchased the tacticool barrel nut and all else needed. My question is how to eliminate the gap between the receiver and handguard. i have read to eliminate the tabs but the tacticool barrel nut wont thread that far. it wont thread far enough to even hit the tabs. Am i doing something wrong? also the adapter that comes with the rail will only thread to the end of the barrel nut. any help would be greatly appreciated

well i think i have figured it out. Apparently there are two different models of the tacticool22 barrel nut. One where you cut the tabs and that allows the rail to get almost to the receiver (as i thought it should and thats why i ordered it). There is also a version where you dont cut the tabs and deal with the incredibly ugly gap. I was unaware of this (assuming new version). I orderd my kit from Amazon where it shows pics of removing the tabs. However it is the newer version that is meant to leave the tabs and the big gap.
Be aware if you order through Amazon as it is very misleading.
I need to return this one and get the barrel nut that is made to have the tabs removed. I have reached out to tacticool22 regarding both issues and have yet to hear back. I will post with an update as this struggle continues

Just hang fire, someone on here will reply with a definitive answer as many have done the handguard swap....it is something i am interested in doing in the future so i will be watching your progress. I certainly wouldn't want the gap either.
Keep us posted.

thanks ghostmutt! Just be sure to order directly from Tacticool22 site. Also make sure you order the one that says "modified" after the description. one says modified and one says standard. you want the modified one. Wich you will have to grind the tabs to get a closer fit. Also if the rail you get has antirotational tabs (as mine does) the standard kit wont let the anti rotational tabs go on far enough for the anti rotational tabs to go over the receiver. i put mine together just to see how it will look when all done. Enjoy the pics! but please.. no mutt drool on my rifle!

Looks great! Are you planning on putting on other sites? Maybe battle sites? Just in case your optical fails for some reason.

There are numerous threads here regarding how to switch out handguards & what tools/parts are needed. Tacticool has posted here many times explaining what is needed. I suggest you use the search feature on this site prior to purchasing parts. Real good chance any issue you could possibly have would have already been discussed by others in the past. A quick search using the keyword "handguard" brings up several discussions on the first page of results.
I even gave a step by step with pics:

Handguard replacement

i did research this and did see your thread redneckjim. it has been a while since i looked it all up though. the biggest problem was ordering from amazon as there are pics in the description showing the tabs being removed and text in the item description saying "modification to the upper required. I am in no way downplaying tacticool or his products. I just thought he should know how it is appearing on Amazon. If i need to purchase a new barrel nut so be it.

I was quickly contacted by tacticool22 who promptly fixed my situation with above and beyond customer service. Not only did they exchange the item for the one i needed, They sent it out priority mail before getting mine back to them!! They even went as far as to offer me to keep and use the current one for an upcoming family outing until i received the new one. I have ordered from tacticool 22 in the past and have received the same great service as i did this time. Big Thanks to tacticool22 and his team.
