Default Are you ok with upgrades that cost more than you rifle ?

I love doing upgrades and tweeking my firearms. But I just looked at the hypertech 24c and had no idea it cost so much. I just thought that and a good red dot and the acessories will cost more than my rifle.
Have any of you added more parts to your 15-22 than its cost?

Flip side..... are the guys who throw a $100 scope on a $800 rifle....... giving them a $200 hunting rig!

It's common for many people to spend much more than what the gun cost, on add-ons, screw-ons, clip-ons, and other stuff that they don't need, and probably will never use. Fight the temptation, buy more guns instead!

Yeah, I'm okay with it.

Gotta have some nice goodies to enhance the basic platform. Plus, most items can be transferred around. Buy a super nice scope for an inexpensive rifle and then when you replace the rifle with something different you can still use the nice scope on it, just as an example.

Although I have scopes for my rifles, I prefer iron sights. I don't hunt though...

I also prefer iron sights. In fact, that's all I use. I'm beginning to think hardly anyone knows how to use iron sights anymore. All I see is red-dots anymore!

My PS90 sights are so bad, the manual refers to them as "back up sights". I have a Trijicon MRO for it now.

My grand dad would shake his hear when he saw my hunting rifle. He would go boy do you need all that. he would kill a deer yearly with an old 00 buck shot. Shotgun with a glued up crack in the stock. The rest of the year he would shoot bird shot or use an old .22 to kill squirrels for sunday dinner. Lol his guns put food on the table

That's a common term these days: BUIS (Back Up Iron SIghts). Not meaning they are inferior in any way. In fact, because they always work, after your red-dot's battery dies, or your scope gets broken, etc.

The shortcoming on the PS90 sights, is due to the very short sight radius. Not because the sights are bad.

I have never owned a gun...long gun or handgun...with a scope or one of those red dot things on it. Never had one with a laser on it, either. Never saw the need for any of 'em. Plus I think scopes on handguns just look dumb.

I think it depends on how you intend to use a specific firearm.

In the case of my 15-22 which is used just for steel challenge matches I have added the H 26C trigger and will be adding a higher quality red dot sight (probably a C-More 8 moa).

If I were just plinkin' then a budget TruGlo red dot would be all I would think about adding.

I think it depends on the circumstances. I my case Y was all for it.
Back in the early 90's I bought a Savage 110FP in .308W. Paid right at $300. It would fire but that's about it. Because of it's mediocre accuracy it never really got shot much for almost 20 yrs . Then one day I dragged it out and ordered a Choate stock for it. Cost right at what I had paid for the whole rig years back. Now with that great Choate stock on it it will shoot 1/4" groups ALL DAY LONG with the right reloads. There was one mod that doubled the cost of the rifle that has paid off in spades. How many $600 rifles out there can shoot groups that small that started out as a cheap $300 plastic stocked rig?
Guns are like engines. some upgrades give you more horsepower, but not worth what you're spending to get it. Same with guns If you're not getting results from them then they're not really upgrades, just lost money.

The criteria for equipment I use is based on it's own merit and how well it serves the purpose, not the base price of the rifle.
I didn't add much.

MBUS folding sights $100
PA red dot $100
YHM can +TS $600

I purchased this 15-22 in 2009. Money well spent.

I guess I'm guilty of having two $1100 15-22s. BUT, aside from magazines almost none of the "additions" are 15-22 specific. I could sell my 15-22s and the "additions" I bought would be re-used. Trigger groups are AR-15 parts, C-mores go on anything etc.

Since CT. decided in 2013 to ban sales of regular .556 AR 15s on the basis of evil looks we still can have M&P 15-22s but with 10 round mag limit, Fixed stock, & no flashider I decided to add a Magpul fixed stock, M4 carry handle, Magpul rail protectors ( Now replaced with LaRue rail covers), & a Tacticool22 barrel shroud in 4.5. Just to make it a little more evil looking.

C-more, MBUS, JP trigger... it doesn't take much to exceed the cost of a 15-22.

Do what you want with your guns FGS and avoid being in either extremist camps of "You must buy A, B, C, X, Y, Z before you can call it a gun", or the other one "If you add anything to the rifle, you're not a proper shooter/you've ruined the gun" blah blah blah

Yes, since my COLT LE6940 cost a lot to begin with. I am happy with the flip up iron sights. In fact I use iron sight on every gun I have, rifles, shotguns and handguns.

The optical sight on my Springfield M1A doubled its "price."

The tactical upgrades I made to a Mossberg Mariner MORE than doubled the price (probably at least tripled it).
They seemed reasonable at the time, but the manufacturer of the stock and foregrip, drum mags and adapter no longer exists, and I am always leery of orphans. They also made the gun heavier, which has pluses and minuses.

I have a Ruger Redhawk I had modified by Hamilton Bowen to 500 Linebaugh. I ordered the optional Bowen lanyard ring. Then added Pachmayr grips, Magnaport trapezoid ports, Ashley Outdoors Big Dot front sight and Express rear sight.

Then, my S&W 329PD sports Crimson Trace Hog Hunter grips and four Magnaport trapezoid ports, Ashley Outdoors Big Dot front sight and Cylinder & Slide tritium Extreme Duty rear sight. It makes a gun that is unusable to me with heavy loads, into a viable trail gun.
They mods well exceed the purchase price of the gun.

So, "yes." I won't spend money to tart up a gun, but to make it more useful to me I will.

In none of these cases would buying another gun have done the same thing as the mods I did.

I have an Aimpoint H-1 on mine. That cost quite a bit more than the rifle. I just bought a Geissele 3-Gun trigger for it, which cost quite a bit too. I am using this rifle to train for 3-gun matches, so it is not really a toy for me, but a serious training aid.

My slide fire kit puts me there....

Not to mention my Bipod grip, Stream light, light mount, light momentary switch, CQB scope, QR Scope mounts, MBUS sights, Hard Case, Valquarsten Extractor, Magpul sling mount, Atac sling or rubber butt pad.All that is roughly 500 bucks in gear. Im in total about 1100 bucks in gear including the rifle.........

Guilty

This side of the pond though that is easy to do!

My scope, trigger and barrel shortening = the cost of the rifle.
The rest of the bits were simply cosmetic or comfort but ALL of the bits have made the use of the rifle more enjoyable.

As a shooting partner said to me at the range last night when we were discussing this exact topic...."we come this way but once- do what you enjoy and enjoy what you do" pop philosophy but it works in this specific instance.

When it comes to ANYTHING shooting related this side of the pond, we are charged over the top prices.

Am I ok with upgrades above the cost of the rifle? Yep I guess I am. When the 15-22 cost circa $1300 for base model.
Before I chop, swap, add and upgrade, by this time it's a mute point, cost doesn't become the issue, the amount of fun does.

Do my spends and upgrades increase my shooting pleasure? Sure.

Does this then make it worth it? Hell yes!

Will I do the same again with another? Already have begun the trip down the road to insanity......... again..

Yes, I have put a considerable amount of cash and time into my 15-22. Currently I have an Eotech sight with a 3x magnifier, modified trigger, and a custom Bullpup stock with a forward charging handle. I am easily $1,000 over the cost of the rifle but I can also honestly say I have 5X more fun with it now because it's much easier to use, connects on targets quicker, and is more accurate.

I slap on a scope and sling and away I go to the range and shoot the rifle as it came from the factory. Upgrade money is spent on mags, ammo and a speedloader....and another rifle. The factory rifle shoots just fine for me and I would rather have an additional rifle.

...you need a different rifle. Hate to say it but 15-22s are 3 moa rifles and that's not tack driver country.

I have a tricked out heavy barrel Remington 597 I've been playing with for a tack driver.

I remember when a platform was what you mounted a gun on.
Now the Gun is the platform to mount all sorts of upgrades on.
I'm not into para military like ARs, but I carried one for awhile.
The best thing about it was its light weight. Now when guys are
done tricking them out, they weigh as much as a M14. My buddy
has so many attachments on his AR, that NORAD knows where
he's at.

Upgrades? It's more like having a Christmas tree and adding ornaments 'til you can't see the tree anymore. It gets to where it's just gaudy and collapsing under the weight of the ornaments.

Dangerous territory, judging people for what they decide to do with their possessions.

If they did a tactical coffee machine i would probably hang one on my 15-22....upgrades....my scope is an upgrade from the iron sights. My 24C is an upgrade from the factory trigger, my match grade crown is an upgrade from the factory crown. My Plinker tactical is an upgrade from the factory charging handle, my ambi safety, BAD lever, AFG and gas pedal and Hogue grip are all upgrades i have made to make the rifle more to my liking.
DO i need any of this stuff....no of course not but it has been a great fun journey, sourcing and mounting all this stuff. I know i have improved the gun each time i go to the safe and I do not have a competition to shoot with my tack driving Anschutz, i eagerly grab the 15-22 and get to have some fun

and what on earth is a barrel but?

Probably a typo but if you make a couple posts about it you'll have people wanting to know where you got yours so they can get one...
