Default New 15-22, question about magazines

Hello all,

Just bought a new 15-22 and it seems real nice....very light, (I'm used to real AR's), but I have a question about the magazines.

It seems the 25 round magazine is VERY long. Much longer than the 30 round ones on my AR. Is there a shorter magazine, 15 or 20 round that would look, and be shorter for range use, or heaven forbid, a 10 round one?

So far that is my only question, I'm sure I'll have more as time goes on.

Make America Great Again!

Thanks,

Rick

There are factory 10 rd mags. A company called Salem 6 was making a 20 rd staggered box mag (beta test), but it seems they have run out.

S&W 10 rounder:

Those Salem 6 magazines are pretty nice when shooting off a bipod or bench - much shorter. 2 things I don't like about them is they require a loading tool and they don't lock the bolt back on an empty magazine.

Pretty inexpensive at $15 for 2.

The S&W 10 rd mag is really your only option. The actual 10 rounders not the 25rd mag that's pinned at 10. They are a handier size, 'specially if you're shooting off a bench and you don't want the mag sticking down getting in the way.

Having been through your exact situation I have a fair bit of info that I can share with you.

First off your standard AR mags are double stack where the 15-22 mags are single hence the extra length. The only double stack 15-22 mags that I have found for sale are the salem 6 mags which are advertised as a twenty round mag thats as long as the factory Short 10 round mag. However if you expect these to run flawlessly you are going to have a large learning curve while you fiddle with them to get them to run correctly. The easy fix is simply load them with only 10 rounds and they will function about 90% of the time.

If you want reliability and a short mag then your only option is the factory 10 round mags. I heard someone mention the 10 rounder converted to a 15 as an option but this is only a conversion on the 10 round mags that are as long as the 25 round mags but were only initially intended to hold 10 for the states that ban high cap mags. So if you live in a state without the 10 round mag ban then there is no purpose for this as you would just get the 25 round mags.

Now there is one more option. The plinker tactical mags. These mags are huge. They are a double stack 35 round mags and some folks have had problems with them but my 9 function better then the 4 salem 6 mags that I have.

So in short from a bi-pod or bench the factory 10 round mags are the most reliable solution and if form is more important then function then the salem 6 mags are an option. I would be willing to trade two salem mags for two standard 25 rounders if anyone is interested in trying them.

I live in a state where 25 round mags are ok. So I accidentally ordered some pinned 10 rd. mags. At first I thought oh **** I have to return them. I simply drilled them and knocked the pins out and viola 25 rd. mags.

I use the 10 rd mags with my kids, they are easier to set up at our local range or picnic table at my brother's ranch. They work well!
