Only got out for a short test run. Fired 100 rounds without a hickup. Haven't even cleaned it yet. Looking forward to a lot of fun. Going to be looking for a decent optic and don't know if i should get a scope style red dot like the TRS-25 or a Reflex type.

Would like to hear the pros and cons if you would be so good as to give me some informed advice. Just going to be doing 15-100 yard plinking.

Either a tube red dot or a holographic red dot (reflex) sight will work fine. I shoot a Vortex Strikefire (version 1) without any hiccups. The wife prefers a holographic, so hers runs an inexpensive reflex.

I prefer sights that can switch color to green or red - the green helps target those pesky orange targets (such as clay pigeons, and some paper targets).

Have you found that you can actually see your target 50 yards out by using only a red dot? Or do you think you can see it better with a scope? I'm curious because people have claimed to hit targets using red dots out to 150 yrds.

Yes - I can and regularly shoot clay pigeons @ 100 yards. Aluminum cans and plastic bottles are no issues @ 50, although Dr. Pepper cans/bottles tend to blend with the red-clay backdrop.

Steel targets... No issue. I have a 45% IPSC steel target. It's about 9x13", and do double taps from 100 yards with subsonic ammo, suppressed. That's so much fun...

Can you *see* a target better with a scope... Sure.. Your field of view will be smaller, and your target will appear larger. Most people also can't use both eyes due to the magnification issues. With the red-dot, I keep both eyes open.

I haven't shot my 15-22 more than 100 yards. However, I *have* shot 18" targets from a 22 pistol with open sights from 200 yards. Granted, the hit rate was low.. Maybe 3/10.

Bottom line, whether you can see it or not depends on your eyes. I have good eyes, and the red-dot gives me sufficient accuracy for plinking.

I have a Burris FF 3 AR-F3 on my 15-22 and have shot it at 25yds and 50yds.

I wear glasses for reading and have no issues using the smallest dot where I get the most accuracy.

Nice! Thanks for the info. I asked because I'm joining to an outdoor range...up to 75 yards. I was in between getting a UTG bugbuster 3-9x32 sight or the Bushnell TRS 25 red dot. I'm new to this so my concern was being able to hit targets up to 75 yds out. And maybe even those little orange balls that flip when you shoot them. Are you familiar with these optics? Also, my eyese are good and I shoot with both eyes open. Thanks.

I have a bug-buster. Stopped using it. Maybe it was because it was my first riflescope. Took it off, and never bothered to try to use it again. Kinda heavy, too.

If your eyes are good, the TRS 25 will be fine to 75 yards. Only issue is that it is red-dot only. That means that if your target is red-ish (orange....), you aren't going to be able to differentiate between optic and target.

Put it this way - if you can see (and hit) the target with iron sights, you'll be able to see and hit the target with a red dot. The red dot is typically smaller than your iron sights...

Good info. Thank you. I'm still torn as to which one I should get. I plan on doing bench shooting at the outdoor range then when that gets boring, switch over to a little quick acquisition before closer targets. Thanks.

I bought a similar rifle & probably shoot it more than any other weapon at the range. As a new owner you'll want to check that the principal fasteners are secure. I clean my 15-22 after each range trip & check the barrel, hand grips, trigger group, etc.

I also shoot w/ eyes open & prefer a variable magnifying scope over 40m. I got a deal on an excellent Nikon Prostaff II that reaches out further than I can reliably shoot .22LR but is great fun. For short-range plinking and bump-fire, I found the MOE sights worked well.

I was going to put a similar optic w/ red/green dots on my rifle but guess I like telescopes.

Took my 15-22 and CZ 452 to the range, same day at 100 yards. Both guns scoped. 15-22 was so so, got in the rings. The CZ was much better, got a few rounds right on the bullseye! Others much closer to center. I don't get to shoot much but was very pleased with the CZ.

My Anschutz 1417 can outshoot my 15-22 anyday of the week, bench, offhand...bolt action rifles, i find are inherently more accurate than blowback semi autos....but that is not the reason i love my 15-22...we did a time trial offhand 25 yard comp, i managed to get 9 rounds out of 10 from my bolt action accurately placed in 45 seconds. In 45 seconds with my 15-22 that would be hella load of mags

I have both a vortex strike fire II red/green dot and a Nikon P-22 scope for my 15-22. Both are great optics but find myself using the Nikon more often at the range. I like the magnification on targets beyond 25 yards. ☺☺

Went out and shot up another 250-300 rounds yesterday in the cold. I was really impressed how well the action continues to work. Did come across some FTF that seemed to be caused by how the rounds were being presented from the Mag. It was very random.
Are there any tips or tricks related to how you load the mag... to prevent this?
BTW the MOE sights are amazingly easy to shoot well. They are a little hard on my old eyes though...

Get a McFadden Lightning Loader for it and you'll have no problems. Well, other than getting through a ton more ammo!

As for the optic, a Bushnell TRS25 would be an ideal optic for this type of gun. You haven't said what type of targets you'll be shooting at/style of shooting (plinking means different things to different people!), which would help people give better advice.

Vs. the TRS25?

I've never owned/know anyone with one so i can't really say. Personally i do prefer ***od' style red-dots like that Dagger Defense, over tube type sights but i've found you usually have to spend more to get decent quality.

At the end of the day though the sight is going on a .22 thats going to be used for plinking, i'm sure it would cope just fine.
