Default bolt/ extractor problems m&p 15/22

After 1000+ rounds I finally experienced the dreaded "extractor" failure I have heard so much about. It sheared off at the range so rather then going for a new s&w part I thought Id ask if any of you know of a better option to defeat this issue? Any insight would be appreciated.

Thank you,
The over loaded and under funded A-hole.

There is the Volquartsen edge extractor for the 15-22, which is readily available, if you happened to retain the plunger and the spring, buy the VQ and you are good to go. If you also lost the plunger and the spring. Numrich gun parts sometimes have them in stock.

so...is it good preventive maintenance to go ahead and swap this part out before it breaks?

I don't understand why S&W didn't put a better extractor in the 15-22. I put the VQ extractor in mine to eliminate stovepipes. It's a fantastic .22 except for the ext. Don't get it.

I have not had one issue with ftf/fte with my 15-22 after over 2000 rounds. all rounds through her have been federal match grade. nevertheless, I have ordered the upgraded ejector.

I have shot the proverbial out of my 15-22 and have never had one stovepipe or failure to eject. I used to have a few FTF until i swapped out my trigger, but they were ammo related. I plan on getting a VQ extractor just to keep as a spare, just in case. Saying that i have never had an issue with my factory extractor...ever!
So an essential upgrade...i would say no.
It is nice that one is available though.

Mine are still running just fine with the original extractors. The ejectors have been adjusted. Seems folks replace the extractor and also adjust the ejector while they have it apart and then give the extractor credit for whatever improvement they may see.

tomcatt51 reply is exactly right. upgrade to VQ extractor and spring is about $22..while you have bolt in hand adjust ejector to fit 2 pieces of paper between it and bolt contact..The VQ extractor should be good for 10K or more rounds...

Follow up to VQ extractor; Here the manufacters description of specs:

Exact Edge Extractor for the Smith and Wesson M&P 15-22. The replacement extractor was manufactured through a EDM process to provide exact tolerances. The geometry has been changed to provide positive ejection every time. One geometry change was moving the hook .015" closer to the rim and changing the angle so that it grabs the spent casing with much more precision and control. The extractor is A2 Tool Steel and hardened to Rc 58-60 so this extractor will not wear out or round over after years of use.
