Question Which Scope????

I want to add a scope to my M&P 15-22, the old eyes are not what they used to be!! Any recommendations or suggestions? I am debating between a fixed power or a variable power (like a 3-9 power). Would also like an illuminated rectical but not mandatory.

Any comments/input on the UTG 3-9X32 1" BugBuster Scope, AO, RGB Mil-dot, QD Rings?
or the Tru-Glo models?

Thanks ahead of time,
Scott

UPDATE:

Sorry, forgot to add how I was planning on using the rifle. I mostly do target shooting/plinking at 25 - 50 yards with an occasional 100 yards thrown in when I can.

What's your budget? Check out the new scopes from NcStar VISM , I've been playing with a few different models, most are around $150, 2-9 power, Go at least 7X . we shoot 10mm dots at 25yards with no problem.

I like a 9 power at 100 yards. Thats about as far as I will shoot my gun for accuracy.

running a nikon p22 2-7 power w/nikoplex reticle on my suppressed 15-22; adjustments are easy, and the rifle is more accurate than I am ...you can find them for around $180 + or -; just add rings of your choice.

Personal preference but i prefer more power through a scope...I shoot with 3x12 that way i can dial it down for close and dial it up for distance, all your choice of course. Big tip though shop around you may find a great deal.

Saying that though I would go with the buy once cry once philosophy and get yourself a Vortex Diamondback or Crossfire II models....remember you are paying for the quality of the glass and vortex optics outshine similarly priced competitors and blow the cheaper pretenders out of the water.

If I wasn't pleased with my MTC Viper Connect i would put money on a Vortex no questions asked!

What kind of shooting are you doing ???

..... mine is just a fun at the range/cabin and/or my AR understudy; so I'll either use a red-dot or a low power 1-3x20 Weaver.

Most shooting is 25-50 yds but will stretch it out to 100 at times......we can't hunt with semi's in Pa.

If I'm looking to shoot tiny little groups at 100yds. I like at least 12-18x on a bolt gun....generally a CZ.

A lot of folks like a 2-7 or 3-9 as a general/all purpose utility .22lr scope

I'd stay away from NcStar or Bafka scopes. I'd look at the Nikon or Vortex scopes mentioned in the above scopes. I've seen to many NcStar and Barfka scopes fail at my range even though mounted on 22lr's.

This Vortex Spitfire is awesome! It is illuminated but works fine even when not turned on. Also comes in a 3x version for about $330.

On my Ruger 10/22 and my S&W Model 15-22 I have Bushnell 1.75-4x32mm shotgun scopes with the circle reticle and they are perfect for the 22LR.

I have a Leupold VX1 2-7x28 Rimfire in an inexpensive cantilever mount that I bought LNIB for $150.It't an excellent scope but I find myself using a Burris FF3 with and without a Trippler much more.

I stopped at Gander Mountain yesterday and looked at the Vortex Diamondback and Crossfire II models. Nice scopes and prices weren't to bad. Might go back there and checked them out once again.

Anyone tried the UTG or Tru-Glo scopes?

I've had a 2-7x32 vortex Crossfire 2 Rimfire for over a year and couple thousand rounds on one of mine. I've got to say it's a great little scope. I've got the same but center fire on my 7.62x39 AR and really love the clarity and lifetime warranty

Thanks Smokey for saying how you intend to use the rifle. Those people saying to use this or that without knowing how you enjoy shooting can steer you wrong.

Vortex Viper PST 1-4x24 being used on the 15-22 here.

Maybe a bit of overkill for a .22LR rifle but it was a leftover from the SR556 that got a Vortex Crossfire II 4-12x42 upgrade.

I've been very happy with the Vortex line. Good quality glass for a very reasonable price. Combining the glass quality with the lifetime warranty makes for a great deal in a low to mid-priced optic.

Nikon P-22. I have the BDC reticle. Great scope. Also have a Vortex Strike Fire II red/green dot I use sometimes on my M&P15-22.

Thumbs up Made my selection!

The Search is over......I went with the UTG 3-9X32 BugBuster Scope. Went to the range and it took about 10 rounds to get it zeroed in. It's an indoor range so the length is only 30 yards but zeroed enough to put 5 rounds in a nickel size hole. I'm happy enough with that. Really like that I can select having the crosshairs either Black, Red or Green depending on the surrounding light. Really helps these old eyes pick up the sights faster! Now I have to find a longer range!!

Not sure how it applies to the Gen2 handguard but mounting your optics over the upper and the handguard can lead to POA/POI changes due to the flex on the non free float handguard.

Seeing that you have a long piece riser joining the two you might be okay, but if you start to notice POA/POI shifts, try mounting on the upper only.

That scope suits the look of your rifle perfectly, i hope you have lots of satisfactory trigger time with your 15-22...great rifle.

I think Burris is running their rebate deal again where if you buy one of their AR scopes you get a FF3 free with a mail in rebate.

I think that this is not the gun to shoot small groupings at 100yards no matter which optics you put on the gun. But it's a fun gun to shoot no matter the distance.

I put a Primary Arms 30mm 1-4X24 in their deluxe cantilever mount on my 22 AR. entire cost $180. Really nice scope very similar to the Burris DSM-1. If you need more magnification they also have a 1-6X24 and a 1-8X24

If you're old school , like me , a fixed 4 power Weaver gets the job done . No bells , no whistles , no programs......I can't program stuff anyway.

ACOG for me. Great from 25 m out to 100 metres.

Brilliant for chasing tennis balls round a field.

Nikon P22 2-7x with a plain ol' Nikoplex reticle. I hate those crosshairs that have a million dots and circles and lines all over.

Here is my suggestion,
Burris timberline 4.5-14 power w/ AO. BD reticle..it's cristal clear, and the reticle works good with 40 gr. Standard velocity ammo..I love this scope and found it for 235$ ..shop around you can find a good price..235$ is the lowest price I've seen .
The scope is not big and is right at home on the M&P AR-22 ..

I went with the 4-12x40 vortex diamondback as well and it works well ! picked one up at Amazon for around 160. I shoot 25 50 75 and 100 yd targets at the range

After going round and round and researching this, that and the other thing I finally ordered an optic for my 1522. There are a lot of magnified optics that caught my eye but in the end it came down to the fact that today my shooting is done at a 25 yard indoor range. So a 1x optic like a red dot or reflex sight seemed to make more sense. I like the Circle Dot reticle found on some of the sights I researched. Lastly I was trying to stay within my budget of $200. I settled on the Sightmark M-Spec. They make a few variations of this reflex sight with various degrees of bells and whistles. I chose the base model because it gives me the reticle I want and came in $50 less than the next higher version. I ordered online from Optic Planet who are selling it at an already reasonable price with an additional 10% off coupon.

I'll report back to this thread once I get the sight and have a chance to try it out.

This is the same setup I use with a suppressor. I really like it. I got it dialed in and as already stated, it's more accurate than I am.

What size rings is everyone using? I picked up a 3-9x32 scope and it's a one inch tube. The rings that came with the scope were too low so I orders a set of mediums and those were too short as well. I'm gonna order a set of highs more then likely.

1 inch tall rings will put the centerline of the scope at the same height as using the irons on your rifle.

Default a scope, NOT a reflex or red dot.

I'm looking to replace the Nikon P-223 3X That was on my 15-22, as it was too much mag for up close steel challenge. Something small of "quality" starting at 1x for me. The Leupold VXlll 1.5 x 5 has served me well on my mdl 7, as well as the leup VXll 1-4x shotgun scope. With 5x and a rest, hitting grapefruits @ 300 yards is very doable, so you really don't need high mag @ 100,+ you won't lose the up close advantage. As an aside, big scopes on small guns just look silly to me. It seems too many start with a WAY TOO BIG a scope & mag, I know I did. PS regular rings worked fine on scopes up to 40MM obj, BUT a rail riser was needed to get the correct height for a good cheek weld fit. (for me)

Default Only 1 range visit so far,

so I won't recommend it yet, but the Burris AR 332 is easy to sight in and fun to use.

If you really want to use a 15-22 for steel challenge, rimfire challenge type speed steel events get a C-more railway with a 12 or 16 minute dot. Goes right on and is the correct height.

Best deal I've seen is here. You want the railway base and a 12 minute dot.
