First semi auto?

I'm currently looking for my first semi auto. And I'm wanting to get a AR-15 For range plinking. Is the MP 15-22 A good choice? i Saw Palmetto state selling them for 300$. Also have they resolved the safety recall with the 15-22? Also what's the accuracy like & is the barrel threaded? Also I'm looking at other AR options like buying a MP 556/223. Also considering buying a AR-15 Complete lower than buy a AR-15 Complete upper in 556/223 & than I can either swap it to a 22 upper or use a 22 Conversion kit. Any recommendations?

Cant speak to the M&P 15-22, as I don't own one. But Most I have read about them is positive.

I would however, avoid a .22 rimfire conversion kit on a 15-556 as many are less than accurate or reliable, and will cost you the same ballpark $$ as just buying a 15-22 separately. Changing uppers gets old after a while as well.

I bought one of the Colt M-4 .22lr copies when they came out. Lots of bad press about them, but mine has been fine with about 6 or 7 bricks thru it.

I was sighting in a CZ512 at a friends when his brother pulled a 15-22....it was black, looked like a Military Assault Weapon....I almost got scared.

Have you ever considered a Ruger 10/22? I bought mine back in the day for $69 and it has never missed a beat. Fun little gun and there are probably a lot of used ones in gun stores. They even make a takedown model now.

I'd get the newer 10/22 takedown with the threaded barrel and carrying case.

If I thought I really needed a 22LR AR type to practice with due to my need to train with the AR platform I guess I'd get a 15/22. I'm no longer active and don't see a need. I'm not expecting zombies anytime soon so no need there either.

I'm sure a 15/22 would be a real fun plinker and that by itself is enough reason to get one if that's what you want. I love .22s but one of those doesn't really appeal to me. To each their own.

I still buy .22 rifles I see abandoned in pawn shops, etc sometimes but usually bolts. Old abandoned .22s do need to find good homes. They have feelings too.

The 15-22 and Ruger 10-22's (2 of each) are the only semi auto 22's I own. Dozens of bolt action 22's in the racks. I shoot the 15-22 more than the Rugers because it is fun, reliable, and easy to clean. I have friends who are approaching 100,000 rounds through their 15-22's with only a few firing pin replacements. My bull barrel 10-22 has a slight edge in accuracy but is not as reliable and is more picky on ammo.

Just in case you don't know, the 15-22 is not an AR -- yes, it has the looks and the controls of an AR but in fact it is a basic blowback-actioned .22 semiauto. Unless you simply must have the look, there are many other blowback .22's on the market that are considerably less expensive and will serve as well or better than a 15-22 for plinking, target shooting, hunting or just about anything you'd use a .22 for.

Not putting down the 15-22, but most of that $300 cost is for looking cool.

If you want an AR style rife then i'd get the real thing a 5.56mm. For "plinking" you can't go wrong with a 10/22. and there are many aftermarket parts to choose from to customize to your liking

Mine is a "cheap trainer" with the same controls as my ARs....... w/ a red dot.

Plus the Boys love it!!!!!!!!! makes them at the range or cabin!


I've got several 10/22s ,a take down (a grab and go set up), an M-1 carbine and several Internationals ( full length manilicher stock). Up until a couple of years ago you could not hunt with a semi-auto in Pa. so all were range toys..... today the full stock 10/22s have become walking in Penn's woods rifles.

Can't comment on your AR swap-out options but I can on the 15-22.

Firstly, to clear up a point that quite a few people stumbled over, there was a recent safety alert but there was not a recall.

S&W asked everyone to perform a quick & simple check on their own rifles. It wasn't a biggie, so don't worry about it. If your going to buy new, your rifle should have been checked and if not, there's plenty of information about it on this forum.

I've had several rimfires in my time (Anschutz, Vickers, CZ, BSA) and, just like many thousands of other owners, none have put a smile on my face like the 15-22 .

It's a great little fun shooter that's very accurate, reliable, easy to strip & clean and is simple to use.

Yes, they can sometimes have their little faults, but the same can be said for just about every other make of rifle out there. Even the magabuck models aren't perfect so try not to get hung up on the occasional guy that's trying to make major issues out of trivial matters.

If you get the opportunity to try one out I can guarantee you'll enjoy it but be warned, an itch will set in very quickly that just has to be scratched so enjoy.

Ok. Cool seems like they solved the recall problem. Also Haven't got a chance to try a 15/22 or any gun. Also cool its threaded.

love mine,,, it feels very close to my ARs to shoot,,,, theya re a blast to shoot,,, i put a red dot on mine and can hit steel plates at 100 with no problem

Mine is the first semi auto I've ever had, I'm not embarrassed to say my 15-22 is my favorite fun gun, and the cost of 22 ammo makes my cheapest gun to shoot.
I've tricked mine out with AR parts because there interchangeable, you can even put most any AR trigger system in the 15 22.
I like others have put a red dot on upgraded the shoulder stock and pistole grip, added forward grip and light.
I think I'll keep this gun.
