Default zero in sights

Quick question: Lots of rifle cases show removing the scope/sight from the gun to put in the case. Doesn't that mean in most cases you need to re-zero the sight when you reinstall it?

Also-- is anyone familiar with the Bestek 3-9x40 scope? Saw a Utube video and it looks interesting (cheap)!

Thanks, Mike

Why would anyone want to remove the optic or iron sight to place a rifle in a case? If that is needed, your case is too small. You are correct about rezeroing, even though you aren't supposed to have to do so with Picatinny rails.

You can't use the term "cheap" if you want a decent optic. It's one of the few places where you get what you pay for.

Check out Nikon's pro staff 2-7x or P series, 3-9x or fixed, for a decent optic around $90-150.

That confirms both of my suspicions!! I figured I need a case big enough to leave my scope/sight on!

And I am leaning toward the Nikon! Just curious about the other.

Thanks guys! Mike

You would be better off keeping your scope on, Very High end scopes can be removed with out worry, their mounting systems are more complex. There is too much slop in the low end mounts and quick mounts. If your going to do it make reference points for remounting.

shoot straight

Because that's what you see in movies... The rest of us buy cases sized appropriately for attached optics.

If the gun shot 300 plus yards I could see your issue but since my 15-22 has a usable distance of less then 150 yards the difference of removing my optics is minimal. I switch between red dots, scopes, flip ups etc all without issue. I just mark the picatinny where each was mounted so that they go back into the correct spots. I never notice an accuracy issue.

I MUST AGREE WITH MOST OF WHAT MichiganScott HAS WRITTEN. THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO NEED TO TAKE A SCOPE OFF A RIFLE TO PUT IT IN A CASE-----ONCE YOU PURCHASE THE CORRECT SIZE CASE ! ! !

IN THE REALM OF SCOPES, THERE ARE MANY INFERIOR, BARGAIN OFFERINGS. MANY OF THEM CAN BE HAD FOR A FRACTION OF THE PRICE OF A TOP NOTCH BRAND LIKE A LEUPOLD (JUST FOR EXAMPLE). ALL RIFLES DO NOT WARRANT THE MOUNTING OF A LEUPOLD SCOPE---DEPENDING ON THE QUALITY OF THE RIFLE, AND ITS INTENDED USE. IT IS TRUE HOWEVER, THAT A JUNK RIFLE WITH A QUALITY SCOPE, WILL YIELD BETTER RESULTS THAN A GOOD RIFLE, WITH A JUNK SCOPE. DON'T EXPECT GREAT RESULTS FROM A JUNK RIFLE WITH A JUNK SCOPE---ITS JUST A WASTE OF TIME AND MONEY.....

IMHO, PICATINNY RAILS DO NOT GUARANTEE "BACK TO ZERO" REMOVAL AND REMOUNTING OF SCOPES. THERE ARE SEVERAL MANUFACTURERS OF "QUICK DETACH" SCOPE MOUNTS, THAT MANUFACTURE A QUALITY PRODUCT. THE TRICK IS IN THE RINGS, NOT THE RAIL.....

"WARNE MAXIMA, QUICK DETACH SCOPE RINGS" IS SUCH A PRODUCT. GOOGLE THEIR WEBSITE, AND WATCH THEIR VIDEO. THEIR QD RINGS ARE IMPRESSIVE......

IN ANY EVENT, BUY YOURSELF A PROPER SIZE CASE, AND A GOOD (NOT JUST "CHEAP") SCOPE, AND YOU WILL BE A HAPPY CAMPER......

Were you in the artillery corps One-eyed Joe? Why you shouting?

If you're shooting IPSC style/sized targets at typical 5-50 yard distances you won't notice much difference in POI, however if you're trying to shoot more precisely or at high magnification you probably would.

One thing to be wary of on the 15-22 is the picatinny are plastic so constantly taking your scope on and off will result in wear on the rail and it becoming more sloppy

Depends on the mounts and scope. Good quality mounts and scope will retain zero as long as you put it back in the same place. To me this means military quality/use. Products that have been tested under extreme conditions to ensure proper zero
