I think, and this is just my opinion, that the Smiths were barred from the Appleseed events because, too many people were complaining that they were better fun guns than the 10/22s.

Hahahaha

The project appleseed site still shows them as 'temporarily banned". I guess S&W won't make a special edition project appleseed 15-22 and pay them royalties.

I sent a message to S&W on their Facebook page, and here is the response I received...

The safety, function and performance of our firearms is an issue of paramount importance to Smith & Wesson. For that reason, we are constantly evaluating the quality of our firearms to ensure that they meet our exacting standards and the M & P 15-22 is no exception. This firearm is reliable, accurate and safe when used in accordance with safe gun handling practices and our instructions for use. We have been made aware of the concerns reported by Appleseed. We are working cooperatively with those involved to investigate the report but at this point, we have no information to suggest that the incidents reported were related to the quality of the design of the M & P 15-22. Thank you! SWCS

Hi everyone, sorry to drag up an old thread but,

Just had a quick conversation via Facebook with a guy in US about if the 15-22 is still barred from Appleseed events.
See below his reply;

Unfortunately yes. One of the guys at the top committee decided that after a couple people had out of battery discharges. I personally agree with it but I’m low man on the totem pole so it is what it is. But you can bring any other 22 or center fire rifle (8mm and smaller).

Not sure if the “investigation got anywhere but I didn’t get a response to my next message, again, see below.

Josh but OOBs occur with all types of semi auto 22 not just 15-22. Then of course there was the full auto incident, though I understand that happened AFTER the APPLESEED instructor had “fixed” the rifle. I’m not an Appleseed instructed person but I have had OOBs with various 22s over the last 20 odd years. Non from a smith but several from rugers and others too. Just seems a heavy and somewhat knee jerk reaction. Oh and yes I live in the UK I do own many firearms. I AM a weapons instructor and an RO, both military and civilian. I do own a smith after getting rid of the Ruger due to, would you believe, too many OOBs

Seems it was just 1 guy then....

Rob.

JMHO, but if this was going to change, I think it would have already. The fact that the issue has gone this long without someone coming up with a definitive answer, tells me that there is no definitive answer. No Answer=No Cure= No change.
Fortunately, other commonly used .22's are relatively cheap so a 15-22 ban is not likely to keep anyone out of the game.

Before the 22rf ammo shortage...I had a couple of OOB's (at an outdoor range) from two of my high round count (approx. 30,000 rounds from each one), dedicated 22 AR (NOT SMITH & WESSON M&P 15-22) uppers. Fortunately...no one was hurt --- But since my last OOB...I shelved my 22 dedicated uppers for the time being, an stuck with a Ruger 10/22, Ruger MarkIII semi auto pistol, Ruger Hunter SA pistol, bolt, lever and single shot 22 rifles.

Appleseed is very safety conscious. Unless I am mistaken they have had only one firearms related injury in their history and it was caused by an OOB discharge from 15-22. That resulted in a minor injury when someone's cheek was cut by a fragment of brass. So my guess is that they are perhaps a little over cautious about the 15-22.

And that girl got a cut because Project Appleseed puts shooters firing semi-autos on the firing line elbow to elbow. That's "safety conscious"?

There was a banner on their site showing shooters "elbow to elbow" on the firing line. After it was pointed out on this forum that banner was taken down. It seems it was easier to blame the gun than their procedures. They admitted to 10-22's also having OOB's. It just happened to be an OOB with a 15-22 where someone got a minor cut.

I wonder what the P.S.I. (pounds per square inch) reading is from an average 22 rimfire OOB?

According to SAAMI, max average pressure for 22lr is 24,000 PSI. I wouldn't even know where to begin to try and figure out what it would be with all the different variables that can occur during a OOB.

Every one (OOB) I have ever had was due to an extremely fouled rifle or out of spec ammo, usually from the same manufacturer I won't name.

If you shoot high volume Semi-auto rimfire a lot it will happen eventually.
