Default 15-22 Extractor Spring

Does anyone know where to find a 15-22 Extractor Spring? I've already tried S&W, Volquartsen, and Wolff. Please let me know. Thanks!

Have you called s&w and asked them for a replacement? I've been looking for the spring for the last 30 minutes, no go. Seems like you could get the size and go have one made a bit tougher, just a thought.

Just a thought for you guys living in US with access to S&W Cust services.

If you are wanting a spare spring, plunger etc.

Have you thought about contacting them, telling them yours has blown out and can you have another?

May mean taking yours out and shipping in for them to fit but at least you would have a "Spare" set.

Yes, I know that means your without her for a few days, but if your waiting months for people to restock parts on a "maybe" then surely this would be a feasible option.

Couldn't do that in UK as there isn't access to such a back up system.

Just a thought.

Hmmmm - wonder is this is a supplier problem. How can S&W fix rifles if they don't have replacement extractor springs?

I wonder if you could match that spring up with some other spring that is close - or one that is a little longer and cut it.

New member here and new 15-22 owner. So far (about a month), this little .22lr has been great and a lot of fun. I have a Vortex Venom on the way along with a mini grn laser. Have a laser on my 10/22 made specifically for it by LaserMax. Once dialed in, the laser is greater than sliced bread when engaging armadillos, skunks, etc on my property. Light 'em up and pull the trigger. I find it very disheartening to discover the lack of / obtaining spare parts for the 15-22. Especially limited lifetime items such as an extractor spring. Haven't checked out the forum thoroughly; is there a S&W rep member here? There's one over at ar15.com. Moments ago, I sent him a question regarding the availability of spare parts. I'm expecting a typical corporate response but hopefully not. Glad to see there's a dedicated section for the 15-22 here. No response from rep as of 01 June 2017.

What laser did you order and how does it attach to the rifle? Let us know how you like it when you get it.

I ordered the TruGlo TG7630 Micro-Tac. Almost ordered the LaserMax LMS-UNI-G which is about double the cost. The red laser on my 10/22 is made by LasrMax and has been excellent. I rolled the dice on the TruGlo due to having a TruGlo red dot / grn laser combo which has been excellent. The ordered laser weighs less than 1 oz. The Venom (3 MOA) weighs 1.6 oz. Want to keep as light as possible. The laser will attached underneath to the M-LOK rail (picatinny) attachment I installed which came with the rifle. The coolest thing (imo) about the laser is no matter how the dot illuminates the target (assuming zeroed distance, etc), it's a hit. One night standing on my front porch which is about 4ft. above ground level, I spotted a dillo about 15 meters or so out in my yard. I swung my 10/22 around my back where it was just below butt cheek level. Lit up the dillo, fired, dropped dillo. I'll post a report on it.

If they have no springs how are they building new rifles? Or repairing when they are sent back?

Surely if you sent your rifle or bolt in for repair minus the extractor and spring they would be able to "fix it" and send it back.
That way you would have a "spare" if you had taken them out yourself prior to sending back.

Just a thought.

Perhaps if a member has a new, unused spring they could mic the thickness of coils, length/diameter of spring, count number of coils and we could check with Wolff Gunsprings and see what they have. They might even be the vendor for them.

Just finished a chat session with S&W to confirm my date of manufacture. I asked about the spring and was told they don't offer that part for retail sale. Blah, blah, blah. Said the usual bs; see if Numrich, Midway, Brownells. That's insane. Going the same way Colt has with parts. Watching a video earlier it doesn't look all that different from a 1911 thumb safety / slide stop plunger spring. Probably is. Hope someone specs out the spring for us.

What a joke. No more SW for me. If I could be a terrible bother and trouble someone to mic their spring, that would be great. Thanks.

Numrich has carried the spring in the past. They are out of it now and told me they wouldn't be getting more back in until August.

I don't know why this spring is such a rare commodity. It's just a spring!

My spring isn't new, but the rifle has a low round count. I measured the spring with a steel ruler, that has metric as well as inch marked. The spring measured just a hair under 3/4 inch× 1/8 inch. The metric was more accurate at 2 cm. × 3 mm. Hope this helps. Anyone know if the10/22 spring would match? I've never put em beside each other, but they would be similar. Maybe?

Interesting findings. The 15-22 and S&W pistols 22A, 22S (both discontinued), and the SW22 Victory all share the same extractor spring. I have found multiple sources which show a common extractor spring parts number (315610000).

Here's a partial list:

SMITH & WESSON EXTRACTOR SPRING | Brownells

Smith & Wesson 22a Pistol Parts List & Exploded View

If anyone wants to continue the common spring search, have at it. My brain is currently fried.

Conclusion: Been up all night doing this and then around 2:15 am Central we get hit by straight-line winds rated from 60-90mph. Not fun. Regarding the spring being the same for the SW22 Victory, I can no longer find that one reference.

There's a dude on eBay selling the "22A" spring for 9.00. Out of curiosity I ordered one to compare to my lightly used 15-22 spring. If it appears to be a match I'll mic the dog **** out of it and see if it can be sourced elsewhere. If it turns out to be same / same I'll post results. Having never dealt with S&W corporate, as of now I'm not a happy camper with their proprietary bs along with their "you're all a bunch of idiots" attitude.

My near 10.00 15-22 extractor spring arrived today though it was sold as a S&W 22A/S pistol extractor spring. Springs are indeed same/same as 15-22.

Spring specs using digital caliper (approx measurements):
Length: 0.823"
Diameter: 0.104"
Wire Thickness: 0.023"
Space between Coils: 0.041"
Number of Coils: 20 including the "pinched" end coils

Note: The factory 15-22 extractor spring had extracted 25 casings. About half the spring on the extractor end had near doubled in space between coils distance as compared to the new spring. Additionally, the overall length of the used spring had shortened by approximately 1/16". No biggie. That's normal for a spring to "take a set" after use. It likely won't shrink further.

Removed my original spring which had one full 25-round magazine through it. Upon removing the "stuck" spring, I noticed light surface rust about 3/16" forward of the recess which houses part of the spring and rust inside that recess. Spring was lightly rusted. Cleaned all and lightly oiled with pipe cleaner.

Pulled up a video to go through this process. Took about 10 attempts to get the extractor reinstalled though in the video it was beyond simple. And when I got it installed, it was one of those deals where I said, "Now how did I just do that correctly?

I had mentioned earlier my discovery of what appeared to be the same extractor spring also use in the S&W Models 22A, 22S, and the SW22 Victory but that I could no longer find that one photo to confirm the Victory spring. Last night I reviewed a youtube Victory disassembly and confirmed the spring.

Days ago I mounted a Vortex Venom reflex (used primarily with handguns). Too low for my liking so I ordered the Venom-specific qd riser for AR15s. Installed about an hour ago. The specs indicated 1/3 co-witness which I was ok with. With me at least, the co-witness with the riser is very, very close to absolute which I prefer (with Magpul flip sights).

Green Laser:

I chose the tiny TruGlo green Micro-Tac Tactical Micro Laser. A little under 100.00. Two sets of batteries included. Each set lasted less than 2 minutes. Not a happy camper.

The manual states it uses 6 lithium AG4 button cell batteries. These 6 batteries come wrapped in very thin clear heat shrink. I thought it was for ease of insertion. Come to find out as I'm researching the batteries after my experience, the wrap keeps the batteries from going to ground to the housing which sucks them dry very quickly. On top of that the batteries were junk Alkaline, not Lithium. With a big magnifying glass I confirmed mine were Alkaline.

These tiny batteries are short on capacity and the last battery to use with any strength laser is an alkaline one.

More research indicated silver oxide AG4 batteries would fill the bill. (lithium AG4s are as rare as hen's teeth). Ordered and received 24 DuraCell silver oxide AG4 batteries.

Kept reading of guys buying batteries and taping them together. I gave thought and decided to try basic automotive heat shrink tubing (black). Fit like a glove with out applying heat. Haven't inserted yet and half expect the tubing might need to shrink due to its thickness. The factory clear shrink was extremely thin. Ordered 3 ft each of 1/4" and 5/16" clear heat shrink tubing. Wasn't sure what my tubing diameter was though I believe it's 1/4". Batteries are 1/4" diameter. Went to trial fit my new battery pack and:

the friggin' allen head battery cap galled therefore no removal. A steel allen wrench and very soft (junk) aluminum don't play well together. I had not gorillaed the cap. Go to my machinist friend's house. Probably took him close to 10 minutes using an extractor to remove the cap. While there he milled a slot (for a screw driver) across the cap. Tiny end mill. Probably spent a solid twenty minutes milling that slot. Turned out sweet.

Emailed back and forth with truGlo regarding batteries. They admitted all this time the manual was a "typo" and were correcting the problem. I closed by saying the problem is the junk noname alkaline batteries. In the mean time another email regarding the galled battery cap. They're sending a new cap.

The tiny laser works fine and I hope it continues. As I stated earlier, my TruGlo red dot/grn laser combo has been excellent on one of my ARs. If I had it to do over again (and I will if this goes belly up), I'd hace purchased the more expensive LaserMax Uni-Max series laser.

Today I also received my tacticool22 barrel nut wrench and barrel vise jaws. Both appear to be of good quality. I'll check to torque in the next day or two and then get everything dialed in.

A major plus is the combined reflex sight, qd riser, and laser weight a total of between 4.5 - 5.0 ounces.

That's about it I reckon. Some pics:

Thanks for checking out the extractor spring from E-bay - I just put an order in for one myself so I have an extra on hand for my 15-22. I would imagine, (with this good info) the E-bay vendor won't have them around much longer either.

The extractor is a bit tricky to get out and back in, but after you do it a few times, it's pretty easy. I now take it apart every time I clean the rifle because it gets really dirty in there.

Nice looking setup you have there!

Thanks again for the helpful information.

That reminds me. Upon removal of extractor items, perhaps up to twenty pieces of particulate came out. Charcoal color and each about the size of a grain of black pepper, some a tad larger. Figured it was unburned powder.

Regarding the springs. Just hoping it'll give us 15-22 owners a larger source to pull from. Perhaps others know but I noticed Numrich uses internal SKU numbers as opposed to the S&W part number. Just a heads up for folks if they go searching parts numbers. Not all that uncommon though some include the actual part number along with their SKU.

Being a bit OCD and at times looking for a challenge, tonight I pursued the 10/22 possibility. The extractor spring for the 10/22 appears to be the same for the mkii pistol and possibly the mkiii Ruger. Anyhow, it looks very similar to the S&W spring to include same number of coils. I did find that the 10/22 spring comes in 3 different sizes (lengths most likely depending on year model however I find only one standard length). Ordered 2 from Midway moments ago and will post my findings. If nothing else, I have a 10/22 so no biggie. It'll be great if it works because it's readily available from several locations. If Ruger wants to furnish parts for my 15-22 in S&W's absence, so be it.

Ruger springs arrived today. Likely won't work however if the 15-22 extractor spring channel is large enough diameter, they might do in a pinch. The 15-22 extractor spring diameter is 0.104". The Ruger 10/22 is 0.110+" diameter and approx 3/32" - 1/8" longer. Wire thickness was a tad thinner than 15-22.

Sometimes with S&W you have to order by part number.

Well, bamashooter, you sir, are the once, all time, and forever MAN. Thanks so very much for sticking with this (my) issue. When I bought the rifle, years ago, it had the occasional fte. It didn't bother me, hey it's a .22, and it way less than $400.oo bucks out the door, but it got progressively worse, no matter how well or how often I cleaned it, until one time, a little over a year ago, a spent case actually got stuck in the ejection port. No joke. As the bolt came forward it jammed the sharp edges of the fired round into the plastic. Disgusted, I put the rifle away. Earlier this year a bunch of buddies decided to meet @ the range and shoot just for "fun" (we are all 3gunners). One guy was bringing his son out and asked me to bring the rifle. We couldn't get five clean shots in a row to eject. I took it home, fed up, finally deciding to send SW back their piece of junk, gave it an extremely thorough cleaning, and low and behold guess what? Have you ever removed your extractor? How did you do it? By pushing rearward on it & tilting in out. Guess what happened the time the case got stuck? That's right, when I disassembled the rifle there was no extractor, spring, or rod. I called SW and they were no help. I bought a Volqsquartsen extractor but couldn't find a spring. In the mean time, I was internet surfing around looking for the spring when I came across a video buy a guy (who I owe as much as you) that explained how the ejector should sit just below the bolt, with out touching it, as the bolt actuated back and forth. I checked mine. It was at least 3/16 low. Eureka! Now I had the original problem solved but needed the spring. I got the rod from SW but they would not sell me the spring. That's where you came in. I ordered one off the ebay guy from the link you so very kindly posted. I didn't want to say anything until I reassembled everything and had an opportunity for a test firing @ the range. Well Sir, I'm happy to report the rifle fires faster than I can shoot it. It's amazing. 300 rounds and not a single fte or anything else. Thank you again so very much. If I get a chance I'll post a picture.
Very Sincerely and Gratefully,
Jeff

Well that just makes my day. You're very welcome. Glad it worked out for you. I don't understand the spring deal at all and will be glad when they're once more available at the price they should be. Happy shooting!

Yes, who woulda' "thunk" it. A spring from a discontinued pistol, bought on ebay, from a company in China (probably) to repair a plastic US rifle on a tip from a guy 4 states away. Thanks again...

1Up for the 22A extractor spring. My cousin got a 15-22 this past week. Somehow the extractor blew out the first day he had it. He found the plunger, nothing else. Ordered a VQ extractor and the 22A spring off Ebay from Trivetts. Came in today, 125rds, not an issue. Worked perfect.

It appears Numrich has the extractor springs in stock. Placed an order and it was confirmed with no "out of stock", etc. Get 'em while available and cheap.

Wink

I bought the Volquartsen extractor upgrade kit from Midway USA. IIRC the kit had a spring in it too. I also have a spare extractor spring from my first 22 Victory somewhere in my shop. It exited the gun on my first test fire, but sadly I've never found it(I'm afraid to vacuum). I shipped the gun back to S&W for repair. They have the parts for sure but refuse to sell retail.

Spring is the same. Likely same plunger. Looking at the 22a/s, it appears the plunger is the same less the anti-rotation tab on the newer 15-22 plungers.

$50 for shipping to the UK Might see if an RFD (FFL) over here would be interested in a bulk buy....

Hi B

I would go in with you for one of each. Have the extractor but could use the spring etc.

Though at this point I have had no need to swap out the extractor.

Rob.
