Question Best ammo for 100 yard range?

Newbie shooter here so forgive me for the silly questions.

Since it started warming up I finally have a chance to goto the outdoor 100 yards range. What's the consensus on the best ammo to get the tightest grouping (assuming shooting from a solid/stable bench rest)?

The ammo that shoots best in YOUR rifle, cause each gun has its "own" preference. My experience has been CCI Mini-mags (expensive) or Blazers (cheap). My best Blazer 22 LR shot was a prairie dog at 165 yards. I was standing at the dog's grave and used a laser range finder on the truck which was parked at my shooting bench.

Yes luck was part of the equation but I stilled killed the prairie dog on my 3rd shot. OK, I was shooting a custom built Ruger 10-22.

EDIT: It has been my experience that expensive match ammo (that was won as a prize or given to me) is a waste of money to buy. I won a brick of Elay Match ($14/50 rds) that shot 50 yard 3 inch groups in rifles & handguns. My M41 shot 50 yard X-ring group from a rest. Each gun is different.

As Engineer1911 indicates, rim fire guns can tend to have individual preferences. Experimenting with different ammo to find the sweet spot is 1/2 the fun of shooting, IMHO.

That said, it can be noted that CONSISTANCY in manufacturing tolerance is what makes the most accurate and reliable rimfire ammo.
In my experience
CCI mini Mags tend to have the best consistency /accuracy in high speed ammo.
Quality standard velocity target ammo like Eley or Wolf MT, tend to produce the smallest holes IF your rifle will cycle them.

If on a budget and willing to give up some fliers, I've found Federal Auto Match (bulk) to be pretty good.

Mini Mags are consistent & were $7.50 a box of 100 a couple of weeks ago. Have hit my gongs at 100yds with my 22/45 target model with Burris Fastfire III from a bench rest!

I've also had good consistency with CCI Mini Mags. They have them on sale at my LGS for only $6.99/100 which is a great price. So far, they have been the most reliable and most consistent ammo with the best groupings for my 15-22.

I just bought some CCI Velocitors and will be trying them out tomorrow at the range. I'll let you know what I find.

Most of the time it's not the ammo, next time your at the range check out other shooters targets, many shooters SUCK! at being on target. Talk about wasting ammo
If you can't shoot dimes (10mm) at 25-50 yards you have no business going out to 100 yards. Many shooters vision isn't good enough to shoot 10's at 100, and if your not using a 9x scope your guessing.

I know what you mean. I currently shoot at an indoor range where I am limited to 25 yards from the offhand position. My old eyes aren't what they used to be and my optic is 1x reflex. I get 2-3 inch groups. Can't wait to shoot from a rest or bipod some day. There is no way I could reach out to 100 yards without a magnified optic.

That said I usually run CCI AR Tactical or Winchester M-22 in my 1522. But it is my understanding that standard velocity ammo is a better choice for longer ranges.

IMHO CCI mini mags or AR tactical - round nose bullets are most accurate in my 15-22 at 100 yards. I use a Nikon P-22 scope at 7x and a bipod.

If you can collect the std vel and also the high vel 100 round boxes
from Federal, Remington and CCI (Winchester opt. ) and test them.

My different .22 rifles are all different and none like the same ammo.
Have fun.

Bulk is too inconsistent,CCI mini mags would be better. If your gun will function with it,you'll probably get your tightest groups with decent quality standard velocity ammo

Get at least ten fifty-round boxes of different ammos, standard velocity and high velocity. This is a one-time investment that will tell you what you want to know. None need be the very expensive match ammo. Try some cheap stuff, but get good quality ammo as well, like CCI.

Take your time and shoot ten-shot groups on a calm day. 100 yards is stretching the potential of the .22 LR anyway, and just a little wind will prevent you from assessing the accuracy potential of whatever ammo you are shooting.

You often get what you pay for. To spend a little more for good quality accurate ammo is well worth it rather than spending a little for trash.

Probably not going to like this but, the 15-22 kinda sucks out pass 50yds. I put mine away when we go over 50 yds. I have a CV512 which obliterates the S&W at long distances

I ran some CCI Velocitors at the range today and had excellent results and nice groupings at 50 and 100 yards. Highly recommended, however, they are significantly more expensive than the CCI Minimags. I also shot a bunch of CCI Stingers and they were all over the place, mainly shot high. I could get get the groupings a little better after adjusting my scope, but I wouldn't recommend them for accurate placement. I'm really not sure what people would use Stingers for. I wasn't very impressed with them.

First, it not a target rifle. It's a 2 moa gun so at 100 yds, 2 inch groups are what you can expect. Second, high velocity is not the best choice out past 75 yds or so. It starts to transition to subsonic and wobbles a little altering the trajectory. Try some cci std velocity. If your gun is broken in, they should cycle fine and you should get better results. JMO.

Have to agree with the CCI Velocitor and SGB. My 15-22 Love them both out to 100 yard with the Velocitor having more impact down range and SGB being a hair more consistent.

Also the try the Winchester PowerPoint 42 Max which is as consistent as the Velocitor in my 15-22. But the most consistent has been the Eley High Velocity Brown box rounds, very consistent high velocity round very match ammo like.

But all the above are a not costly for a 22lr. But more affordable and very good is the the AR Tacticals. These are my practices rounds. Love them.

I have went thru a lot of testing in my 22lr weapons and I both rounds that work best in all of them short and long distance. I bought both round/flat nose and a hollow point at a given velocity and weight.

I won't go quite so far as to say 9x is required to shoot at 100yds ( having fired bragging groups at that distance with irons).

But I will agree that if the shooter/ rifle combination isn't giving groups of 1 inch-ish or less at 25yds ( from bench or prone sling ) using what ought to be decent mass produced ammo , further ammo testing isn't first priority.

When I first got my 15-22 back in the olden days...

I took it to the range with a magnified scope to see what it liked best. I tried everything from Wolf Match to HV bulk. To my surprise it performed equally poor with everything except Aguila Match Rifle.

Unfortunately, there's no one right answer for all 15-22s. But you can eliminate stuff like Remington GB that is simply loaded inconsistently.

If you want to keep the experimenting down to a minimum, I'd start with CCI Standard Velocity and Minimags. If neither performs to your satisfaction then go from there.

Happy ammo hunting...

"hair more consistent" ?? Guys nothing is wrong with the ammo, your heartbeat / pulse can throw you off .5"-.75" at 100 yards. Concentrate on your breathing and shooting patterns. Put you rifle in a solid vice and than shoot , you'll see the difference.

Sorry but I just don't know this stuff...
Is 40 Grain high velocity and 36 Grain standard velocity? I'm trying to get my "NEW"22 Victory running and keep having a jam issues. Trying to find a fix to this "jam thing".

36 and 40 grain is just referring to the size of the bullet. Not the velocity

skipsw22 You have to keep that thing super clean, even with aftermarket extractors they still jam. Look for the highest velocity bullet you can afford to shoot.

In the CCI Mini Mag world (both high velocity), 40g is solid, and 36g is hollow point. The CCI Standard Velocity is solid lead nose (not plated), but is also 40g.

That applies to several other brands, but is in no way a "rule".

The box will probably say that a round is standard, high, or hyper velocity. Except Blazer, which is CCI as well, and has no speed listed. It is actually in the high velocity group.

You may find that hollow points jam more often. In a couple of my pistols, the hole (hollow point) will cause the bullet to hang up as it loads up the ramp.

I'd go for mini mags from an m&p from that range just cause it's decent and won't drop as much. I doubt the mp22 is going to be super accurate. I haven't shot a ton from that far, but have managed a sub MOA group with a built up 10-22 using CCI SV. Stuff probably drops 7" from that far away though. You can see the bullet hit through a 12-16x scope.

Try Winchester super X 40g 1435fps

My rifle seems to like it with no issues.

Pic of target, was my best that day at 100 yards.

I'm assuming you have a S&W 15-22, but which model? There is the standard "sport" and then there is the more expensive "Performance Center" model that has a match grade barrel and chamber, as well as an 18" barrel with target crown.

I have seen pics of the PC version shooting exceptional tight groups at 50 yards with some Aguila Super Extra HV, but there were also decent near-one-hole groups with some other brands. ref: Plinking Fun with S&W (Part 2) - The M&P15-22 Performance Center Rifle - OhioValleyOutdoors.com | Hunting, fishing and outdoors information for the Ohio Valley

Each rifle is different. Start at 25 yards, and if it's good at that distance move to 50 and that will tell you if it's even worth tacking up a target at 100 yards.

I read recently an issue with .22 LR ammo in that it destabilizes going from super sonic to sub sonic in a range of 100 yards. Browning has a very high velocity ammo that may stay in the supersonic range most of the range. Eley Tenex is also very good out of my rifle, a PC version, but too expensive for everyday plinking. Serious squirrel and rabbit hunting I would have no qualms using it.

Actually going to the range again this upcoming sat.

I have the none pc version with blue spring and mlok handguard

My current ammo stash
500 cci mini mag cprn
600 cci ar tactical
650 federal auto match bulk
275 federal range pack bulk
80 browning 1400fps 40grain cphp
80 cci velicitor
50 federal gold medal
50 cci std velocity
50 winchester 42grain subsonic
200 cci stinger

The federal range pack and auto match bulk are what i can get cheaply locally, so i tend to mostly shoot those.

I agree. CCI Mini mag is my standard.

I have always found Mini Mag 40 grain round nose to be the best. HOWEVER - I was at the range about a month ago and a fella that was shooting a vintage rolling block Remington .22 gave me half a box of Wolf Match Target 40 grain lead round nose (standard velocity) to try in my 15-22. He had been a competitive shooter in the day and said it is the best for accuracy. I tried it and it was dead on. I was shooting at 50 yards and it was better than the Mini-Mags. The Wolf 22lr ammo is made in Germany. I have a Nikon P-22 scope on it with a bipod to shoot from the bench.
