Default Case rupture: ammo or rifle failure?

This is a photo of an Aguilla Super Extra High Velocity case that ruptured while firing my 15-22. The rifle is new--less than 1k rounds fired--the ammo is new also. The rifle was clean with about 50 rounds fired before the rupture took place. I was slow firing.

Is there any way of knowing if this a rifle or ammo malfunction?

Default Case rupture: ammo or rifle failure?

If this is the first time it's happened in 1k rounds then I'd assign it to an ammo issue. I had this happen the first time I ran Remington thunderbolts. Rifle had at least 3k round of non-Remington ammo at that point. Hasn't happened in additional 2k rounds since then (not using that ammo).

How much of this ammo have you used? If it happens repeatedly after switching ammo brands, it's a rifle issue.

Could be the bolt was hung up a couple thousandths short of being in full battery causing an excess headspace issue on that particular round. Or it could possibly be a round that went off while feeding into the chamber. .22's are rimfire and the rim is the first part of the cartridge to contact the bolt when feeding from the magazine. Could be several causes. I'd clean the rifle well and shoot it more with different ammo. If it happens again you probably need to get it looked at.

When I was a safety officer for a military range, I asked the USAF Non-Destructive Inspection (NDI) lab to assist in a shotgun that exploded with serious personal injury. Their specialized sensor data and analysis was able to determine the condition of the metal before failure and the failure mode and pressure at the time of the failure. In this case, it was found to have resulted from a man handloading a round far beyond normal pressure limits and destroying a perfectly normal barrel. As the man had previously been warned not to experiment with his handloaded ammunition on the military range, the finding ended a career.

So yes, it is possible to make an accurate forensic analysis of your case failure, but not by just looking at it and speculating. And certainly not just by looking at a picture of it and speculating. The obvious first guesses are firing out of battery, excess pressure, or a thin spot in the brass, but micro analysis of the brass structure is needed for a factual answer.

Looks to me to be ammo related. Since owning my 1522 I've experienced at least 3 out of battery detonations. One of which blew my extractor off the bolt. On each one it's clear to see the expansion of the case above the rim. Your casing looks to be isolate to just the rim portion.
Of course that's just my opinion

I've fired about 200 rounds with no problems, the ammo works well in my rifle, it's pretty consistent, and the price was right so I went ahead and bought a few thousand more rounds before I had the failure--hopefully it was just a fluke.

Thanks for your comment.

Default Examine the shot ammo closely...

You may be able to see a trend that would point to the problem, like bulged but not broken cases.

Hi Sir,

I have had only ONE issue like yours with 22 ammo. It was the same brand as the one you have used!
Been shooting 22 rim fire for over 50 years!
Never bought it again!

Be well & SAFE,

I've had a many like that with Remington Golden Bullets. Some ammo is known to be hot. It happens. Just be glad you did not blow an extractor.

Thanks again everyone for your comments.

I did blow the extractor, so I ordered a Volquartesn Exact Edge extractor as a replacement. Does anyone have experience with theses extractors?

I've had quite a few failures to eject (around 15%) no matter what ammo I use and thought the Volquartesn may help. Also noticed that the ejector was sitting kind of low in relation to the bolt face--not sure if that happened before or after the case rupture. I bent it upwards a little so that it will hit the rim a little closer to center. Hopefully when I get the bolt back together the failure to eject problem will improve.

It is casing issue with the ammo. Have it happen several times
even in BA rifle with this brand. I have had rifles because of
slop in extractors, usually single shot hammer guns like Stevens
Favorites blow out rim on many brands.

My 15-22 came with screwed up ejector out of the box...all kinds of fte/stove pipes/mangled cases. S&W stated they knew it was an issue. Got fixed and installed the VQ extractor and it's been great since.

Does the box say "AGUILA" prime or "ELEY" prime?
