Default Should I sell my M&P 15-22 ?

M&P 15-22 was my very first firearm.

Purchased from Academy Sports and I and my wife enjoyed shooting .22 rounds.

Purchased a Glock 19 then a shield 9 after.

Now I own a Colt le6920.

I feel like I won't be using 15-22 much but at the same time, I can' t decide whether I should I keep it or not.

Can you suggest me some good reasons why should I keep my 15-22?

At the same time, I have never done a private sale so I am kind of afraid that if someone who doesn't quality owing a firearm buys mine.

Thanks

I use mine to train on the AR platform for cheap - 22LR is cheaper than .223/5.56 and the same functional controls as the big boy AR. And I can use it at steel rimfire matches. Use it to master basic rifleman skills then transfer those skills to a centerfire. I've also used mine to introduce new shooters or even show my liberal friends that "black rifles/ARs" aren't evil.

Also, I've used mine to train other family members. My wife and I still shoot it a lot.

Sums it up for me......................unless you really need the couple hundred bucks you will get selling a used rifle.

It's easy to shoot....... and fun..... so it's been great for the wife and boys to learn the AR 'platform"

When you sell a car do you check to see if the potential buyer has a clean driving record? You wouldn't want to sell it to a drunk or a pothead or someone with a lot of speeding tickets, right? Way more people get killed every year from automobile collisions than firearms.

I have no use for a .22 LR caliber AR-15 type rifle (not platform) so I would sell it without a second thought.

If you do not shoot it and likely will not shoot it in the future, the only reason to shoot it is nostalgia. I am an advanced photography enthusiast. My parents bought me my first camer when I was in 9th grade and joined the photography club. I still have that camera and never will sell it. It reminds me of the great joy I felt when they gave it to me. Nostalgia is reason to keep it if you feel attached to it..

If you can't decide whether to sell it or not, don't sell it. You will probably regret it in the future. Besides, you can always sell it later.

Merriam-Webster...... has a definition of "Platform" as being a vehicle for an "operating system"

The 15-22 is not a "AR-15 type rifle".... it is a blowback operated firearm that looks like and has operating controls similar to the Armilite (AR) rifle.... therefore the 15-22 can be thought of as a rimfire training "platform" to familiarize a shooter with the controls of an AR rifle.

In fact; there are several variations of operating systems ( direct impingement, blowback and piston) that use the AR "Platform".

Finally the use of the term Platform has been adopted into common usage......... for example see the Ruger website for the SR-762 ......
which refers to the 762 as ........"The AR Platform Redefined"

To each there own.......so.........YMMV

ANYBODY that calls themselves a shooter needs to have a good .22 to go back to now and again. It will always be a great training tool and a heck of allot of cheap fun.
As I tell my customers: "If you can't hit it with a .22, your not going to hit it with a .223 either"

I'd keep it, as it is always nice to have something around that can fire a 22lr round. It's not costing you anything by keeping it, there is no harm in it sitting around as a safe queen for a while. I have a few rifles I haven't shot in years. Also, by keeping it, you don't have to worry about suffering from sellers remorse later on.

Why do you feel that you won't shoot it much? Go to Academy and look at the price of ammo... tell me which is cheaper, the .22lr or the 5.56mm... I can tell you which rifle I shoot more!

You do not list any 22 lr's, everyone needs at least ONE 22 lr. I have the first 2 guns (12 ga Semi & Sporter Mauser in 30-06 ) that were mine, now 50 years later I am glad that I still have them. If you truly need the 200$ that you will get for a used 15-22, then go for it, just remember, that when you go to buy the next one it will be twice the price. Be Safe,

Two trains of thought.

I've got over 30 guns in the safe. I don't shoot all of them all of the time. It kind of cycles and rotates. It will come back around. And you'll have it still.

If you need the cash out of it or are just done with it, yeah, sell it. Its not a unicorn, and you could pick up another one down the line if you wanted one again. Did that with an AR and bought another 4 years later. 2003 Postban Bushmaster turned into Christmas 2010 for everyone.

Default FROM PAST EXPERIENCE.

You can hold onto something for decades & never have a need for it UNTIL you get rid of it, then it becomes a MUST HAVE item. If you could get a good price for it, perhaps selling it, or trading for something more useful might be a good idea. You sound a bit younger than many here, so it could be the first gun you regret selling, THERE WILL be more.

I have.

If I couldn't hit with it, I got rid of it. If I had no use for it, same thing. Plain and simple. Actually, the only thing I ever sold to get cash for was a postban Bushmaster to fund Xmas in 09. And... well, it was a 2003 model postban with no frills. And.. well, I figured I could easily replace it with one I actually wanted down the line. Same thing with a 15-22. Not like selling off some heirloom shotgun or rifle. You can get one all day long. I'm on my 3rd Beretta 92. This one I won't sell off. But I guess my take is, its not a sin to sell a gun. You can definitely make mistakes, but if you don't really want it or can't hit anything with it, I say on to the next person. Walther P22 - buh bye. Did not replace with anything. Marlin .17HMR, buh bye, replaced with a CZ 455. Now if I sold my 686, well, it would come with a note to the buyer to immediately shoot me with it for selling it to them.

I definitely say hold on to it. Everyone needs a .22LR to plink or train with. And the 15/22 is one of the best choices for that purpose IMHO. It’s a good all around rifle to hang on to. Plus guns are investments. If you need the cash one day, you’ve got an easy to move chunk of change you can cash in.

For the money you'd get for it why not keep it? Like someone stated, most people don't shoot all the firearms they own regularly. Some sit in my safe for a LONG time not being used and one day I get the itch to shoot it. That, and a 22LR rifle is just fun and is a good learner you may one day want to teach someone to shoot with. KEEP IT!
