Default 15-22 for Small Bore Steel Target Match?

I am interested in trying some friendly competitive shooting at my local club. Has anyone done NRA Silhouette Competition with their 15-22?

The course of fire for consists of 40 steel targets:

10 chickens at 40 meters

10 pigs at 60 meters

10 turkeys at 77 meters

10 rams at 100 meters

I observed the competition last week, and everyone was using bolt action rifles with scopes mounted. I talked with the official regarding my 15-22 that has a red dot sight. He said my setup would be OK to try out the competition and see if I liked it. If I did like it and wanted to move forward and be more competitive, I would probably want a different rifle.

There's no reason not to give it a try with your 15-22 but he's right. You're shooting a 6" target at 100 meters, offhand, with a rifle that will shoot 3 moa benched. Not exactly the best way to go.

A good red dot with a two minute dot will work, but you're gonna want a more accurate rifle if you get at all serious about silhouettes.

If you can shoot it-why not. I remember one time at a sporting clays match a police officer showed up with an 18" 870 cylinder bore and proceeded to wax everyone with their fancy over unders.

Just practice hard at those distances to establish your poi with consistent ammunition. MOA be damned. Drive the weapon. Don't let it drive you.

Local turkey shoots are similarly entertaining.

No. I have watched a few and they bore me. But just about anything with a sanctioning body lots of rules bores me. Surprised to this day I did so well as I did while in the military and government. By nature, I'm a loner when it comes to shooting. But for those who do enjoy that kind of stuff, more power to them.

Thank you. Obviously you must have had an insatiable desire to show the world you're a jerk. Congratulations, you succeeded. Now go practice your little shooting game. Run along now.
