What just happened?
Hi guys I'm new to the forum and need some help. I have a brand new 15-22 with 0 round through it. Im pretty stressed out with this gun tonight. I changed the grip on it this evening and something very unbelievable happened. When the new grip was installed I had left the break down pin in (where the blue spring and gold detent comes up) and when i pulled the pin out, to close the upper to the lower, the detent came with it, right through the inside wall if the frame. Now, i was able to pull the pin with my figures, it was kind of tough but it was plenty doable. My question is, What the hell just happened? and has anyone ever had any issues like this? Will this be covered under warranty? Any help would be apprieciated. Thanks in advance.

I’ve never seen that before but it looks like you pulled the take down pin too hard and that was the result. Smith will likely fix it so just give cs a call.

You'll have to contact S&W to see if it'll be covered. That's a lot of pressure to cause that kind of damage.

You posted this at 11:04 this morning "I have the same barrel shroud on mine and I have had no issues with it at all. I have about 550 rounds through it with no signs of it coming loose with no lock tight. I did however find it difficult to get my M-Lok screws to work where the shround enters the hand guard. I found that if you leave it loose while putting your accessories on it helps. I have the 8" version and could have done with the 6" and been happier. Thanks hope this hepls."
Is it a brand new gun or one that you have had for a while, modified, and shot a bit? When you contact S&W and send it in, they will know that the gun is not new. They have seen all sorts of damage and know whether or not it is a manufacturing defect or someone decided to remove a take down pin without knowing how to do so without damaging a gun.
A damaged framed is not easy to repair. They may just offer to sell you a new gun at reduced cost, which is usually equivalent to sale prices at some of the on-line vendors.

S&W won't be able to repair a damaged frame. You have a choice to either come up with your own idea for a new pin or give them a phone call, send it in, and keep your credit card close by...

Looks like the takedown pin was in / exposed to the interior of the rifle and someone slammed the upper down to the lower. The pin then caused the "slice" into the pin / detent / spring retention hole. I don't see any other way for that to happen.

Take it back where you bought it. They may just give you another one!

I know it's 'only' polymer but that must have took some force to do. Let's hope you get that good guy at S&W when you call for a fix....but having just swapped my takedown pins...this really must have been a facepalm moment when you realised what you had done. HULK SMASH.Shame..pretty sure it should be covered under warranty though?

Yeah face palm smash, then scream an smash a whole of stuff in the garage. lol We will find out tomorrow when i call them. If I am up a creek without a paddle, My buddy told me he has a E-clip thing that will sit flush on one side of the rifle to hold the pin from popping out. We will see what happens. Thanks for all the advise.

I do think the e clip would probably work. Give it a try. Also you could probably repair that broken area. Use an epoxy resin of some kind. If not then off to S&W it must go. Wish you luck. Please post the outcome
