Default rifle for CMP tactical rimfire competition

In reading an earlier post, I missed the answer. Has anyone any experience shooting CMP Tactical Rimfire competition? if so, which tactical 22 rifle do you use, the 10/22 tactical or the M&P 15-22? The critical distance is 50 yards at a 1 7/8" 10 ring. If someone likes one over the other, are modifications necessary? Which mods did you do? Thanks for any responses.

I’ve never shot the CMP competition, but I shoot a Tactical rimfire match every month at our club. I have both a heavily modified 10/22 and a lightly modified 15-22 that I have used in this match. Without knowing the round found or rules for CMP I can say the 15-22 has the edge when reloading since the mags are easier to get in and out at speed. Other than that, if it is iron sights only I think the 10/22 has faster sight acquisition, especially if Williams Fire Sights are allowed. If trigger mods are allowed the 10/22 has the edge there with the BX drop-in or Kidd $105 trigger kit. If you have to run them stock, then the 15-22 trigger feels better out of the box. The 15-22 also has a longer handguard so if you like a forward thumb over type grip, it is the better out of box choice.

Here is the rule book: http://thecmp.org/wp-content/uploads...f?ver=02082018

The 10/22 can be used in the Sporter class, but the Tactical class requires an AR pattern rifle like the 15-22. There are some restrictions and the stated intent is not to start a technology war, but appears you can have non-fluted after-market barrels and triggers and optical sights no greater than 6x (Tactical or Sporter T class).
