Default 15 22 vs KRISS

Has anyone had the opportunity to compare, or heard of any comparison of the MP 15 22 LR with the . 22 KRISS Defiance DMK.

The only thing different about the Kriss is that it’s aluminum upper and lower. Nothing new since you can by .22lr bolt and upper for your AR, for less. Or you can get an awesome 15-22. It does everything the same except for the forward assist. Who really needs that on a plinker?

Edit*
It is a nice idea to be able to put 10-22 barrels on It if someone wanted more of a precision setup.

I own both and in short, the 15-22 is less finicky and more reliable.

My DMK22 will not function reliable with any type of Federal ammo. It's fine with CCI, Aguila, Norma, Armscor or Remington ammo. Nothing but stove pipe stoppages with Federal stuff.

Accuracy is little more consistent off the bench then the 15-22. The Kriss also have a very thick barrel which also adds a lot of weight. I know that they can be swapped with 10-22 barrel, I just haven't bothered with it.

The last shot bolt hold open works much more reliable on the 15-22. With the two Kriss OEM mags I have, it's a 50/50 affair. With Black Dog mags it will hold open all the time, but will not engage the bolt stop. (closes when mag removed)

The Kriss is a fun rifle when I run it with the ammo it likes.

In many respects, the KRISS is closer to an AR15 than the 15-22.

KRISS pros/15-22 cons:
Magpul pistol grips with beaver tails fit on the KRISS without the annoying gap. The trigger guard can be replaced on the KRISS with AR15 drop-in style parts. Replacement triggers can be dropped into the lower with regular length pins and anti-walk pins. The KRISS safety selector can be swapped-out with standard drop-in parts. The lower will accommodate a Magpul BAD lever without needing to be altered in any way. The charging handle on the KRISS can be replaced with standard AR15 parts. The hand guard on the KRISS is longer allowing you to install 'all the toys' to replicate your centrefire AR15, or if you prefer the 'C' clamp support grip. The hand guard on the KRISS is stiffer, so forward mounted PEQ boxes (and similar) retain their zero. The buffer tube on the KRISS is aluminium, and the buffer and crown area don't sag like they do on the 15-22 after extended use. The KRISS accommodates aftermarket 10/22 barrels.

15-22 pros/KRISS cons
The KRISS only has 15rnd magazines. The KRISS magazines lack the follower button, so they aren't as easy to load as the 15-22 mags. The KRISS doesn't feed as reliably as the 15-22 (once the 15-22s magazines have been broken in). There's no way to see how many rounds are left in the KRISS magazine. The polymer of the 15-22 is a lot harder harder wearing (cosmetically) than the aluminium of the KRISS, which looks worn after a couple of sessions –particularly the painted FDE version which starts to chip the very first time you use the charging handle, and the very first time the bolt cover snaps open. The 15-22 either has moulded picatinny rails or M-LOK slots, whereas both the STD and LVOA KRISS models require proprietary interface picatinny rail sections. The flash hider/muzzle break on the 15-22 is fairly standard, whereas the the KRISS has a proprietary design that is very difficult, but not impossible, to remove. The 15-22 is far lighter, and therefore more pointable. The cleaning interval on the 15-22 is far, far, longer than that of the KRISS. After a couple of mags (30rnds) the KRISS feels decidedly 'gritty' regardless of the ammunition used.

I currently have an original 15-22 (quad rail), a STD KRISS and a LVOA KRISS, and I'm trying to decide which of the three I'm going to keep. The LVOA is the most comfortable to shoot, but can't be moderated. The 15-22 is the least comfortable to shoot due to the short hand guard, but it can be moderated. The STD is somewhere in between the two, and it can be moderated. Ultimately the two KRISS models are considerably more expensive than the 15-22, but don't necessarily offer any additional compelling features. I suspect that the KRISS models will last longer and take a heavier beating than the 15-22 (the sagging buffer tube is a bit of a concern), but that the KRISSes will look very tired, very quickly.

At the moment I'm leaning toward keeping the 15-22, based on how reliably it functions.

The 15-22 has a 10” handguard. I’ve found this sufficient for even a c-clamp style grip. If not, the barrel nut swap and hand guard of your choice is relatively inexpensive.

I’ve looked at the kriss and although tempted, decided that you can’t beat a 15-22 for a .22lr dedicated rifle when it comes to price, customization, magazines and reliability. If I wanted an all metal AR-22 trainer, I’d buy a CMMG conversion bolt and mags or PSA upper for my AR-15.

Thanks for your take.

Couldn't have said it any better myself.

Could I ask, anyone that owns both rifles- do the Kriss magazines function in the S&W?

I'm a fan of the short S&W mags for various reasons and was thinking about getting some of the Kriss ones if they work.
I can't find out anywhere online and obviously the S&W mags work in the Kriss, does anyone know if it works the other way round?

No, Kriss mags will not work in the 15-22. They are too wide and won't fit in mag well.

I just wanted to add that the KRISS goes for around $600 bux Vs the $349.99 I paid for my 15-22 at the Academy..

Since we're on the subject I'd thought I throw in that I recently purchased a Beretta ARX160 22lr. And in all honesty I kinda like it more than my M&P15-22 and I paid $299 after discounts for it ...

My Kriss is only a week old. I did look at several S & W in the store and could have easily gone that way and been happy. The funny thing is, everybody has a different opinion and none are wrong really. For me, I liked that AR-15 magazines fit nicely (order the clear, smoke tinted .22 mags from Black Dog that hold 25 rounds), paid more for the green rifle version because they shoot straighter and chicks dig them, and like the way Kriss iron sights grip to the top and sides of the rail. The ability to install any 10/22 barrel makes this a rifle you can pass down to the next generation. I have only had trouble with old Remington .22 ammo so far. Super old Winchester 22 ammo worked perfectly. Plan to add a scope, so an all metal upper was important to me.
