You should ask for 1300 is to hold and 1000 to purchase, or whatever amount you reasonably need.**

You do not have to inform Firearms but you do need to present the licence to the ammo provider so they can record the purchase.

** No point having to go shopping every few weeks.

Hey there Lyns,

Depending on the generosity of your firearms dept, you will get 1300 to hold 1000 to buy...but in my experience a first time applicant will probably get 500 to hold 500 to buy (in my neck of the woods anyways). Always put down more than you anticipate using that way you if you do get lesser amount it may not be the minimum, which i think is about 500. It all seems to depend on your local dept.

Once applied to your FAC..that is all you can get...you just need to get it signed when you buy ammo. I will tell you though that page gets filled pretty quickly when only buying in 500's especially when you've got a 15-22... I hope your ammo salesman has very small handwriting haha.

Hi GhostMutt many thanks for the reply very informative and exactly answered my question.

I will probably be asking many more questions and it is nice to no people are willing to help on this site.

May be a silly question to some but being new to shooting I think its best to ask professionals and owners before I apply so I am aware of what needs to be done and ask now rather than guessing.

Thanks Again

lyns

Hi Lyns and welcome to the forum.

I’m relatively new to this forum myself but I’ve been shooting for a good number of years now.

Several new members of my Club, when recently applying for an FAC, asked for 1500 rounds as a minimum. When asked why they wanted so many rounds, the stock answer was so they could buy a sensible quantity of batch tested ammo for competition work. They were invariably given 1000 with no separate figures for buy & hold.

Keep in mind though that if you can justify an increase in your holding, you can apply to have the figure increased at a future date.

Asking the local Firearms Dept revealed that in our area (Cambridgeshire), it was policy to do away with separate figures for buy & hold and just apply a maximum figure (this would explain why mine changed from 6000 hold & 5000 buy to just 6000 at my renewal last year).

It may be that this policy will apply in your area.

Happy shooting

Iain

All (mainland) forces did away with the different buy/possess limits over 3 years ago, you only have the possession limit now.

Agreed you'll get through 500 pretty sharpish, especially if you start shooting mini-rifle comps. I burn through my 1200 fast enough, i've been meaning to put in a request to get my limit bumped to 3000, i've never got around to it.

Thanks to all for all your input much appreciated.

I had heard from some where that you cant store and buy ex amounts of ammo so this confirms it.
