Mine arrived in today's mail. It arrived taped to a card in a "Presorted First Class" envelope from S&W. The reverse side of the card has photos/instructions for use of the gauge. The gauge itself has BCT lettered on it.

I'll try it tomorrow.

Good eye. My BCT was covered with sticky stuff. Brake cleaner made short work. At first, I felt disenfranchised.

Got mine in the mail today, mic'd at 0.036". I previously measured the bolt face at 0.040" so my son's rifle passes the test. I went ahead and used the tool just to verify and found that it sits slightly below flush.

Mine just arrived. My trusty Harbor Freight caliper measured it at 0.0365. The same caliper said the depth of the recess was 0.039 so I am good to go.

Ordered mine on 3/9 and received today as well. All 6 of my bolts were flush or slightly below. (all are good to go)

One of my bolts has 140k+ fired on it, (bought in 2010) and the bolt face is battered a bit and it below flush. Tuff little buggers these 15-22's are.

I would like to hear the details on all the ones that fail, like what depth are they at ? as well as the serial prefix and date of manufacture. Seems Smith doesn't know what got out when ?

Agreed, but I have a suspicion the number that fail will be statistically low. This is a more of a CYA move by S&W.

As of 3-23-19 I have not received the return label to send my bolt back to S&W. Not even an email about it. I imagine S&W is overwhelmed with this recall.
Inserting a 22lr round onto my bolt it sure looks like my bolt will need to be replaced.

I ordered the part on 3/9 and received the gauge on Friday 3/22. Mine checks out fine. BTW my 15-22 was recently manufactured on 12/20/18

Received my gauge in the mail today, flush on the bolt in question, a little below on the older one. I’m happy.

Guess it was a Lucky S&W mail week! My test gauge arrived yesterday and both of my 15-22s passed with flying colors. I knew they would from previous measurement with my tools. Doesn’t hurt to have an extra eye

Wasn't real happy with what appeared to be a flush fit. I had cleaned the face well w/ a pointed q-tip and brake cleaner. Looked spic and span. Looked again moments ago and saw carbon up in the curved area and a smidge on extractor. Took a brass brush to it and canned air. With the naked eye it appears below the surface now; perhaps a thousandth or so. A bit surprising but I'm a happy camper now.

I know what you mean. I was quite surprised at how much crud builds up in that radiused area. I just keep a handful of toothpicks and a bronze brush in the range bag now.

Received my gauge 3/25/19, checked it with 2 calipers, manual and digital, both at .035. Measured the bolt face with both at .040 and the gauge verified it's ok. Older rifle shot regularly, cleaned when it tells me to, usually mini mags, no problems so far. Ser. # HBZ6XXX. Good luck with it everyone.

"Radiused". That's the word I was looking for.

Talking with a guy at work today who advised me that S&W aren't shipping the checking gauges overseas.

Knowing that said 'guy' is a complete spanner who, if his stories are to be believed, can regularly hit V bulls at 1000yds more often than the GB Rifle Team, I decided to call S&W Customer service direct.

I've just got off the phone (7pm local time / 3pm US time) after talking with a very nice lady who advises me that a batch of gauge requests for overseas customers was dispatched on the 15th March with a two to three week delivery time.

Don't believe everything you hear from people claiming to be in the know

Iain

I still haven't received the email confirmation and was starting to worry.

Thanks for the update.

My local RFD have been back in touch saying Sportsman gun centre said to send it back to them through him and they would deal with it. But if the guage is in the post I'd rather wait as I think mine is within spec. Sportsman will be my backup if the guage doesn't appear.

That makes sense to me. I haven't seen anyone comment that they found one out of spec yet. Mine passed with flying colors.

Been thinking about this myself, always been a S&W fan & I will check my rifle for them. But I wonder if this is not like an insurance policy , with the new ban & all. I'm sure this is a small expense to know if any stock 15-22's can auto fire.

Default 15-22 Bolt Recall

It would be good to know the depth specs then I could check my bolt myself with my tools.
Thanks for the recall notice.

3-23-2019 Update: Still haven't received my shipping label from S&W for return of my bolt for replacement. Not even an follow up email from S&W about it.
3-27-2019 Took delivery of my 15-22 on 3-2-19. Went to the range the following week and had many multiple discharges as described in the safety bulletin. That is pull the trigger and am second round fires as well. When I cleaned the weapon I noticed the forward pin on the trigger assembly had backed out enough to allow the assembly to move. Reseated the pin and assumed it might be related to the failure. I heard about the bulletin and called S&W 3-11-19. Still haven't received a mailer. I told the I wanted a replacement bolt since I had experienced one of the failures mentioned. Now I wish I'd asked for the gauge. I too would like the spec on the depth of the bolt recess so I could measure the recess and move on.

The issue you were having is most likely related to the loose hammer pin you found. Broken J-pins allows the hammer to walk out of reciever.

On the mailer, usually they will send it via e-mail, at least that's how I always got mine. Check your "junk" e-mail folder, it might have found it's way in there.

The gauge is .036”. Everyone who has measured had gotten .042/.043”. Those who have gotten the gauge, measured, and passed with the gauge all got those measurements.

Thanks cjt50. I think you are right. I just measured the recess on my bolt at .042. Although no one knows for sure what the spec is, others who measured .042 seem to be having no issues. I think I'll just order the gauge to be sure. At least I did not experience any unwanted discharges when chambering a round. In any case I will not be chambering any rounds except downrange until I'm sure.

Thanks Sgtsandman. That clarifies what I was thinking. Now I can go back to the range and see if the hammer pin stays in place. There is enough leeway between .042 and .036 for me not to worry. This is a good reminder to us all about the importance of muzzle discipline and not trusting a weapon until we have used it and broken it in. Still won't chamber a round in the house.

As far as the pins, you could get those anti-walk pins with the bars and screws that lock the trigger and hammer pins together. They’re cheap enough that I’m considering then for mine even though I’m not having a problem.

I think that .042 - .043 is the newer current bolt recess spec ? My Jan. 2014 P.C. HCExxxx measures .0385 which others like Iain also have measured on theirs. Really don't think the new spec needs to be so loose considering there is about a .005 chamfer on the chamber face of the barrel.

It could be. As long as the measurement is .036”, like the inspection gauge, or more I would think you’ll be ok. I forget what the max is no one seems to be having an issue with that, just the minimum.

The gauge is free. I received an email from S&W on the recall and mine is one of the ones affected by it. I chose to order the gauge rather than sending my rifle in. Still waiting for it to arrive though.
I don't use that one all that much anyway so, it's perfectly happy being a safe queen till it gets here.

If you get pins make sure it's the longer ones for a 15-22 and not the ones specific for an AR.

I called S&W yesterday. Its been 2 weeks since I ordered the gauge. My rifle is new and I really want to actually shoot the darn thing.
Customer service rep gave me a story about some glitch in the system. Told me it will be another week or Two before I will get it. 3-4 weeks for a little gauge?
Sorry, but that is BS.

I would just use a digital caliper to measure it. You will get an actual measurement instead of the Go/No Go gauge. I used the gauge and saw it was a few thousands deeper than the gauge and then used the calipers to measure it at .0385. My caliper only reads in half thousands, Iain's measuring tool is much more precise.

Wish I could afford something that measures that precisely Like everyone else here, I've only got a digital vernier reading to half a thou at home.

For the precise numbers, I cheated by using a CMM at work that cost the Company several hundreds of thousands of pounds

It was a nice change for the guys to measure something other than engine parts

Received the gauge today. Ordered on March 12th. My 15-22 checks out ok with gauge flush on the bolt face.

HBU prefix serial number purchased in January of 2014.

Thanks to the OP for bringing this my attention.

I'm glad you guys are getting the tool and your rifles are fine. I requested mine right after I originally posted here and still haven't received it!

Guess I will try to re-order it.

When did you order it? Mine has been 2 weeks and S&W told me that i5 will be another week or two. Not holding my breath. Do yourself a favor and measure it yourself.

Thanks for the update.

My local RFD have been back in touch saying Sportsman gun centre said to send it back to them through him and they would deal with it. But if the guage is in the post I'd rather wait as I think mine is within spec. Sportsman will be my backup if the guage doesn't appear.
FWIW, I never recieved an email confirmarion but received the gauge weeks after ordering it. Gauge thickness is what everyone has been reporting, 0.036”.

My guess is S&W is focused on mailing the gauges rather than replying to thousands of emails. I never received a confirmation but I did receive the “go-no go” gauge in the mail. I think that’s smart.

The important thing is people are getting the gauges. Sure it would be nice to have an email letting us know they are coming but only just that, nice.

It seems the average wait time is about 2-3 weeks from when the order is placed.

Happily, it seems most people are checking out good once they get them.

Requested mine on 3/19. It arrived either on 3/29 or 3/30. No prior notification received.
I haven't had a chance to check my 15-22 yet.
