Question What spare parts for 15-22?

Hi,

I have a new 15-22 and was wondering what spare parts I should have on hand for wear items, and where I could get them.

I thinking of...
  • Firing pin
  • Extractor
  • Extractor spring
  • Extractor plunger?
  • Recoil spring?
  • Anything else?

Is it possible to get OEM parts, or must I search for 3rd party parts? Any suggestions of where to look?

Thanks in advance!

I saw in another old thread, the following place that seems to have a bunch of parts...

Midwest Gun Works

They had items on my list, and an oops kit that seemed to have a bunch of pins and such. The only thing I didn't get was the firing pin. Not sure if I should get the S&W pin, or get a Volquartsen or Tandemkross pin as a replacement in case of breakage.

Any suggestions?

As I have broken the OEM firing pins on my stable of 15-22s ( I have a pile of broken pins ) I have replaced them with Volquartsen's flavor. So far they are holding up well.

This is not a slam on Tanemkross's firing pin, it wasn't available when I started the replacement.

Me, too... MGW have the best selection of OEM S&W 15-22 spare parts, and their prices and shipping are reasonable.

I have everything on your list... That's virtually all the small parts, I think.

Bought the Oops kit ("includes springs, pins, and detents for the bolt catch, buffer retainer, disconnector, hammer, trigger, pivot pin, takedown pin, selector, trigger guard, and the magazine catch"), and then firing pin spring, extractor spring, recoil spring, and Tandemkross extractor.

I didn't get the extractor plunger (thinking this won't fail - I'll probably lose it now ) or firing pin.

Was wondering if it was better to spend $10 for a S&W one, or $30 for a TK or Volquartsen one. Sounds like I should try the Volquartsen one - Thanks @cjt50.

I have yet to break a firing pin, but I have spares.

I have lost many plungers, plunger springs and extractors due to ******, over-charged Remington Golden Bullets. I recommend having spares.

I have to 1st qualify my response in stating I am a "HIGH" volume shooter. I average 5-10000 rounds of 22lr a month depending on availability.

For "me" the average life of a 15-22 firing pin is between 15-20000 rounds before it breaks. I had a couple break at 3000, and a couple make it to 25000. Currently the highest round count on one of the Volquartsen pins is 34000 and it still going.

Yes, I have an obsession with AR style 22lr rifles.

Thanks. I'm sold. So where do you find the best deal on Volquartsen firing pins?

And are the firing pins the same on the 15-22 and the MP 15 Sport?

The 15-22 and MP15 Sport are 2 different animals. One is 5.56 / 223 and the other is 22lr. The bolt carrier groups are VERY different, using different parts.

Most major parts houses have them; Brownells and Midway to name a couple.

Just an FYI - based on a sample of only one (so take it for what it's worth) I cannot recommend the Tandemkross firing pin. It proved very unreliable in one of my two 15-22s, I have not tried the Volquartsen part, but probably will do so since it seems like most people like that one. The OEM pins are great, but they do have a limited lifespan if you shoot a lot of 22.

When a pin breaks S&W will send you a replacement at no charge. Of course the disadvantage is that that gun is down for at least a couple of weeks until the part arrives. It's better to have a spare on hand. A couple of times I've called S&W for a replacement pin and they were out of stock.
