Default Dumb 15-22 question

I got myself a 15-22 for Christmas and in the course of watching a dozen video's on U-tube I saw people unscrew the flash supressor and screw on something else.

Problem is mind doesn't seem to want to come off with just normal hand pressure. I don't want to put a wrench of pliars on it until I find out if that's what needed or not. Or do they just not come off some versions? I don't see anything in the manual, but about all I see there anyway is red ink.

Why do I care? I don't know. I'm not going to fool with a silencer or any of the other stuff that screws on there, I guess I just want to know.

CAUTION ***************

You can screw it off with the proper size wrench. But you MUST have, and properly use, the barrel vise, available from Tacticool22.com. If not, you will break the plastic receiver and your rifle is kaput.

If you want to change it just get the right tools from Tacticool 22. It isn’t much for the proper tools or you can make your own

I used a rubber strap wrench on the barrel, and a screwdriver thru the slots on the flashhider......

If you want the flash hider off ... I would truck down to my local Gunsmith and let him remove it ... so I don't have to buy any special tools ...
then put a little shotgun choke tube grease / lube on the threads ... every now and then remove the flash hider , clean and re-lube so it doesn't get stuck again . You should be able to remove it with hand / finger pressure or at least not have to go through a complicated song and dance to remove it.
Like choke tubes , the threads are super fine and the flash hider or protecting cap needs to be removed , the threads cleaned and relubed with the proper grease/lube every now and again ... Otherwise they get stuck in place .

Actually ... leaving it alone isn't a bad idea . My Dad used to tell me " if it doesn't want to come off ... don't force it , leave it alone ."

Exactly. I'm too cheap to pay someone else, or buy a tool. I don't want it off that bad.

In many cases, that is the wisest approach....experience.

Lol. I put a dummy mark in my barrel when I took mine off. Put an old leather belt over the barrel and clamped down hard with a new Vice grips. Heated the flash hider with a small propane torch to help release the loctite from the factory. Had proper sized wrench. Still came off very hard. And the Vice grip went through the leather and scratched the barrel. Had I been patient I could have just drilled a hole in a block of wood and used a bench mounted Vice. Live and learn. I bought the right tools after that for about $20 when I upgraded the forend. Luckily I knew from everyone here over the years not to
Torque on the receiver. But that was pretty much common sense to me anyway

And actually everyone should have the tools. The factory barrel nut can loosen and cause all kinds of issues. Poor accuracy and many feeding/ejection problems that people complain about. It’s just part of maintenance to check things occasionally

Why in God's name, do you people take a Factory ENGINEERED gun, and want to modify it, bubba it to death, hack at it, remove parts, and every other foolish thing you can do to it? The entertaining part is after you're done destroying it, you get on the forums and gripe about what **** it is😂😂😂😂FANTASTIC!

Because we can lol. Factory isn’t perfect by any means. Perfection is in the eye of the holder lol. And that changes constantly for some

Not a dumb question! (READ Post #3) Caution indeed.
*I just received my MP15-22 this year and love it. I had the same question after reading warnings on this forum to be cautious when wrenching on rifle barrels.
*I love this little plinker and I hope you enjoy your new Christmas gift.
*Love the photo in post#2. They look like a blast to shoot!
Good luck!
Rick
