Default Just Ordered My First 15-22!

My LGS FINALLY got one in, so I ordered it right away. It's #12724, with red/green dot optics (see attached stock photo). This is my first red dot, so I'm eager to find out its/our strengths and limitations.

Questions:

I'm looking for a soft case. I know it's 34" long, but not sure of the total height. Anyone know?

Is there a sling mount/swivel on the front?

Where can I find 25 round mags?

What is the length of pull when the butt stock is fully extended?

IIRC, the firing pins last about 10k rounds; where can I find spares?

Are there any other spare parts I need?

Thanks

When you need to replace parts I’d suggest Volquartsen for a source: firing pins, extractor!

Thanks. What's the average lifespan of the original extractors?

No clue. Never shot one enough to find out. I have the pistol version right now. Maybe 500-750 rounds through it since I got it this fall.

How was it?

Is there a break-in period, particularly that I should be using a high-quality round like CCI Mini-Mags?

I love mine and it is a reliable shooter. Hope you have the same experience as I did. Search forum for part issues and advice. Some good threads here.

*I get mags from all over stating at Midway, CDNN, gunmagwarehouse and the following.

*Magazines

*Rifle Magazines

Good deal. Why the necessity to order when the "LGS" had one in their inventory?

I'm not the OP, but I did that myself. I was looking over my LGS's website and saw they had them on sale. I just clicked the "buy it now" (or whatever it's called) and paid on the website, and went in later to pick it up.

I know they're not going to knock much off a new gun, so that wasn't a consideration, and I didn't go in to find out they were sold out here a few weeks before Christmas. Also didn't have to fight the crowd. I went straight to the paperwork kiosk, and filled out the paperwork. Then my wife and I went out to eat and came back later to pick it up.

Now, I don't know if that's what the OP meant, but it's one way one might "order" something the LGS has in stock.

I haven't seen any in stock for several months. High demand items, eg S&W revolvers and Mini-14s, sell out on-line in a couple of hours nowadays.

In addition, last Saturday, after that high school shooting in Michigan, the LGS, though fully staffed, was PACKED with customers for starting paperwork on guns and buying ammo, taking 4 hours just to get to an employee to start paperwork on another gun. No one I talked to in line would admit that it was panic buying after the shooting.

Use high velocity ammo.

Clean and oil frequently. This is not a 10/22 that you can ignore.

I converted mine to 6920 spec.

Thanks. How often do you recommend cleaning and oiling, particularly if it's sitting in storage for a while between range sessions?

Every other trip to the range, I give it a good cleaning. Say every 200 to 300 rounds. The bolt face is recessed, so get a dental pick and clean out the stuff that builds up in there. Oil with something light like CLP.

I had some issues with ammo (even high velocity), so I try to use CCI Mini-mags for matches, and then practice with other brands. I'm hoping it will break in and eat anything, like some other folks have seen.

Finding mags are hit or miss. I have had luck with JoeBobOutfitters.com, which seem to have a good price as well, but I had to wait a bit for them to be in stock. They do free shipping with orders over $90. I just signed up to be notified when they came in, and then buy them.

I clean mine after each range trip, though, I'll shoot 200-300 rounds at a time. I do see a log of guns on the bolt face, so, like other people have mentioned, I use a pick to clean it out.

For parts, I poked around and got some kits of parts (springs, extractor, etc). Will eventually get a spare firing pin. Scan the threads in this sub-forum, as someone had info on a booklet (Gun Guide) that shows all the parts, and how to fully disassemble the MP 15-22. It has info on cleaning as well. Very useful.

It's a great/fun gun to shoot. You'll love it.

Today, I went to the LGS to start the paperwork on this gun. I checked the butt stock; it's fixed and the LOP is 2" too short for my arm (in contrast my M&P 15 Sport ii had a fixed stock but the LOP was only 1" too short, easily remedied with a no-brand recoil pad).

Does anyone know of a way to lengthen this 15-22's butt stock?

Midwest Gun Works stocks a good selection of 15-22 parts at fair prices. For lube purposes, be aware the bolt glides on the two rails attached to it. A brass brush, intended for firearms, is a good addition to your 15-22 cleaning kit. The AR15 reduced hammer spring kits will fit; don't do it. Any .22LR requires a smart hammer blow to reliably set of the cartridges. That nifty reduced trigger pull kit likely will take you into FTF land. For ammo, CCI Blazer is good stuff.
