Default Is a 15-22 the right choice?

I am mostly into .22 revolvers, but would like get an AR style 22 for plinking. Sold my Colt 5.56 ‘restricted’ rollmark a few years ago and miss the platform, but could probably have more fun with a 22.

I notice several S&W SKUs and prices mostly in the $450-$500 range on GB. Would definitely want a red/green dot too.

I prefer the pre forward-assist, VN era A1s, but haven’t found anything decent without spending a lot more. Keep coming back to the 15-22 for best value and fun factor.

Any recommendations on which model to look for? Best value red/green dot for close range in the field and indoor ranges? How about slings for in the field?

Thanks for any suggestions or thoughts for a 15-22 newbie.

I've been happy with my 10210 SKU (FDE MOE furniture). Fun, reliable so far, and decently accurate. I've got a Burris FF3 mounted when I don't have a 22 scope on it. The 2 point sling I got off the big shopping sight cheap - can't give you any more info about it. I see that some 15-22s come with a red or green dot from the factory, which might be the way to go. Oh, have fun, and get plenty of magazines.

As I have 4 15-22s (2 rifles, 2 pistols), I will easily say that it's the way to go... While I have dreamt about taking one of them and adding a bunch of Volquartsen or other parts, I have yet to do so...

My LGS sells a Crimson Trace red dot for about $60... It's the Crimson Trace CTS-25...

I prefer the Ruger .22 Charger to an AR .22 buts that’s likely because I am so familiar with the 10/22.

If I was going to buy an AR .22, it’d be a 15-22 though, solid guns.

It's the way to go. Get yourself a few 25 or 30 round clips, a speed reloader, a brick and go have a blast, literally!!!

Unless they have run out, Palmetto has one with 3 magazines, and a case for $430. Good deal especially with the price those magazines are going for these days.

I bought a 15-22 from PSA last year. As soon as I received it I saw the deal for 3 mags and a soft case included. Called them up to see if they would honor same deal for me or at least some store credit. So sorry Zip nada nothing they could do. Kind of made me angry. I've spent thousands of dollars with those folks, not so much lately.

I bought a 15-22 from Academy during a sale on them a few years ago.
I shot it the day I bought it and it has resided in the safe ever since.
I do remember that it was fun to shoot and had no issues with the mini mags I fed it or the 1 x 25 rd magazine it came with..

I consider the S&W 15-22 a solid plinker. I've put 1000's of trouble-free rounds through mine. The 15-22 functions in most ways like a AR15, so it's a good understudy/practice tool with lower cost ammo. Many AR15 goodies will also fit on a 15-22. For a serious, long term heavy use .22LR semi-auto I lean to the Ruger 10-22 platform.

Depends on what you want. Personally, I prefer my CMMG Quebec A, which is a dedicated .22lr upper on a multi-caliber marked lower. Because it is an aluminum upper on a true lower, the weight feels the same as my AR. The M&P 15-22 is very light.

However, the M&P 15-22functions just like my M&P 15 Sport right out of the box, with last shot bolt hold open. I had to buy extra parts to add to my CMMG to get that feature. Also, the M&P runs longer between cleanings than my CMMG.

Default S & W 15-22

I have one of the model 15, 22 rifles with eight 25 round magazines. My grandkids and I have a great time shooting it. Great gun.

I would say the 15-22 is a little toy like (it's plastic and it rattles) but still a very fun little semi auto rifle and a capable pinker. While I have many to choose from, I still seem to grab my 15-22 and take it to the range all the time. I also find it a good choice of rifle to diffuse the stigma surrounding the "scary black gun" to people new to the shooting sports who may have learned everything they know about shooting and guns listening to NPR and watching The View.

Wow. A big 'thank you' to everyone for their thoughts. You guys gave me some great advice.

I am looking at the base model 10208 because I want the flip-up sights. The Vortex Crossfire red-dot (with high mount) seems like a nice, inexpensive add-on.

Looking forward to having some fun!

With the red dots you get what you pay for when you cheap out on it.

In the decision for 15-22 vs 10/22, the ability to use most any AR trigger in the 15-22 is certainly an advantage.

Hard not to have fun plinking/training with either. Enjoy your 15-22!

I have purchased 2 15-22's in the past year and a half. Have the basic one with flip ups, and the FDE MOE slim with flips. Zero issues with the base, a few minor early issues with jams on the FDE but has since disappeared after upgrading the extractor. They are a lot of fun to shoot. Have a 10/22, which is a great gun as well, but I like shooting the 15-22 more. Also, if you buy the MOE slim, I did not like the factory grip, too thin. I put a hogue grip on it and its great.

Got one in November, and absolutely love it. I use it for Steel Challenge competitions and have been really enjoying it. No mods yet, just running with iron sights.

Default Really like the 15-22

Put only a few hundred rounds through it so far, but is was flawless in operation and very accurate with the open sites or the red dot.

I agree with the Tippmann Arms M4-22. Aluminum upper and lower unlike the 15-22, controls identical to an AR, trigger has a crisp break at about 5#, magazines the best out there.
About 500 rounds through mine, everything from cheap bulk Winchester to CCI Mini Mags. Zero malfunctions.
I have a Sig Romeo MSR Green Dot on mine and shooting 50 yards with CCI SV it will group 1 1/2" and if it weren't for my astigmatism causing the 2 MOA dot to flare it would probably do better.
Pic is with a Vortex 2-7x32 but I didn't like the 100 yard fixed paralax so I put the green dot on it.

I have always thought it is the most fun gun I own. Nobody goes shooting with me that doesn't grin about how much they like shooting it. AND, they have not even shot it with my suppressor on it. Go for it, you will not be disappointed.

Yessssss! One of the best AR type 22’s o the market. It eats everything I have put in it without a glitch or bobble. I do run it well lubed, it seems to run better that way. Buy some extra mags, they are getting pricey! I have the magpul addition, with a C-more on it. Good enough for squirrels @25 yards!

I just checked and Palmetto State Armory has in stock the flip up sight version with case and 3 mags for $399. Palmetto is a reputable company too.

Yes, the receiver is plastic but the design is such that the bolt never touches the receiver body. It rides on two steel rails and the bolt itself is hard chromed so wear is mitigated. I personally know of at least two 15-22’s that have in excess of 50,000 rounds apiece with no discernible wear. I have put a cheap aluminum free float tube on mine which has brought the weight up to standard AR weight.

The 15-22 is a great firearm. There are minor shortcomings like being polymer where it doesn’t feel as high end as a Tipmann. Honestly though I love how light weight it is. I’ve got the pistol variant with brace and everyone who shoots it, kids and adults alike love it and want one. Another option for an AR - like rifle in .22 is the Sig 522. They aren’t made anymore but that is a fantastic rifle. I’ve had mine since the first year they came out and it is a lot of fun to shoot and very accurate for its format.

If I understand the OP, if you have no AR 5.56/.223, here's my suggestion -

Buy an AR you can afford, and get the CMMG conversion kit. I have one, it is reliable. Just change out the bolt, load your mag, and get ready to smile.

I use mine during winter time in my Colt M4 Carbine so I can shoot at the local indoor range.

JMHO YMMV

I special ordered a complete CMMG AR with a dedicated 22 upper.

I like the idea of adding any caliber upper on it I want.

My 15-22s are my go-to guns, I use them more than any others, you won't be disappointed.

Obviously if you want high precision, you'll want a bolt-action.

I bought mine in 2010 and after a dozen years I've run a zillion trouble free rounds through it. Two sons learned to plink with it and it's dispatched a good number of vermin around the hen house through the years. I've also used it to let folks who go through the sheriff's office citizen's academy do some shooting at the department range. It's been accurate enough and plenty reliable. Even though I own many other .22 rifles, including several 10/22's (which I'm fond of) and think the 15-22 is a good .22 rifle for the money.

Fun units. Have a pink platinum and a camo as well as a pistol. 3-9x on both carbines and red dot on the pistol. Lots of fun times, wife enjoys.

Mine was bought in a restrictive state many years ago. First thing I did when I moved was to drill out the pin keeping the stock from moving.
Thought about having the barrel threaded (Nuther no no)but so far have nixed that. Might just get a new 15-22.

Looking at Vortex scopes.

I bought a couple back in 2015 or 2016. One for me and one for my daughter. I had a couple red dots laying about that I stuck on them and the fun ensued. I like it because we can shoot all afternoon for the cost of one box of .223.

I bought mine about 10 years ago at a LGS, I wanted to teach my sons how to shoot with it. This is my youngest son, he now takes the 15/22 with him and his friends to the range. Topped it off with a Vortex Strikefire red/green dot. BUY THE 15/22!!!!

This is my 15-22, topped with a Vortex Strikefire, & fitted with my Silencerco Warlock 22 suppressor. With CCI Suppressor 910fps rds, it’s amazingly quiet and cycles perfectly!
