Unhappy S&W Switching between fire and safe is "Mushy"

Hi there, I'm really a newbie so please don't mind if this is a stupid question.

The deal is, I went to purchase a new S&W MP15-22 Sport version, and while trying the one in the shop and watching videos online, switching between safe and fire modes I hear a "click".

But for the specific one I purchased, there was no click, it's just a stiff and mushy. The safe works perfectly though.

I asked my dealer and they said, just oil it up and don't do anything further, it doesn't affect the usage and I better not do anything weird or change parts it may not work as intended.

Is there any safe way to fix this? Have anyone experienced this?

PS. Gun has never been shot yet.
PS2. The gun has been cocked before engaging safe so it's not the case of inappropriate use unless I'm misunderstanding something.

Thanks for replies in advance <3

Not an AR expert but my agency once issued me a Colt AR15 (LE6721) with the same problem and the Armorer replaced the safety (which is actually a pretty easy job).

The round cuts on the safety are not correct or the detent/spring is not right. There should be two positive shallow cuts with a not as deep cut between them. The click you hear/feel is the detent popping into the deeper holes as the safety moves on and off. I would remove the grip, spring, detent and safety and look for burrs on the spring hole or a bad spring on the detent. My wag is that the detent could have been installed backwards or a piece of the spring is folded up under the grip so its not as strong. The detent looks like a blunt bullet with the pointy end going into the cuts on the safety and the flat end against the spring.

The safety and detent are plastic, so they may have been made at the end of a molds life and not sharp as they should be. As long as it blocks the trigger when engaged, your good to go.

I like ambi safeties, so I up dated my 15-22 with the Battle Arms development BAD-***-PRO M&P15-22 Reversible 90/60 Ambidextrous Safety Selector.

Made from metal and nice sharp positive clicks. Unfortunately you can not use just any AR15 safety. The polymer lower is wider than a standard AR lower.

Be very careful if you decide to do this. The detent and spring sometimes have a tendency to launch themselves across the room if you remove the grip too quickly.

Sounds like a part or two may be missing. Another poster has already mentioned that the detent and spring will try to fly away. If you do the disassembly/reassembly inside a big clear plastic bag you'll be pleased with yourself.

If everything is plastic on the s&w that would explain the mushy feel. Sorry I didn’t mention it but be aware that the spring and detent can get away if you aren’t careful as the previous poster said. The detent on a regular AR is brass. Personally I wouldn’t invest in a smith AR if they weren’t 100% compatible with the standard AR. The AR is the firearm version of the Barbie doll, dress it any way you want.
