Cool Smith & Wesson M&P 15-22 build 2022

I've been shooting a fair amount of 5.56 and it's getting a little $$ so decided to build a .22lr AR. I saw some posts about CMMG conversion kits and there was no way I was putting that in my DDMv7 Exclusive ( 16" with all the PRO parts which was an expensive "steal" ).

I didn't want to spend the money on the M&P 15-22 18" Performance Center version so picked up a new standard M&P 15-22 16" and upgraded it myself.

Each component purchased took hours of research so I thought I'd post about it incase someone finds the info interesting and as of this post it's all CURRENT.

Allot of reading, youtubing and price hunting led me to do the following:
  1. Rifle: Stock M&P 15-22. Bought one for $350 with free shipping and paid $45 for FFL. It came in 1 piece with 1 MAG.
  2. Grip and Stock: Did a little poking around settled on the "Hogue AR-15 / M16 Kit: OverMolded Beavertail Grip & Collapsible Buttstock - Slate Grey". The rubber grip has a lip on the front which I sliced off with a blade, otherwise it doesn't fit. Easy task.
  3. Magwell: MAGLOAD Element Competition Magwell (red). Don't skrew it in too much, just to the lip of the magwell so you don't mark the lower.
  4. Muzzle Break: MAGLOAD 1″ Muzzle Brake for 22lr / 22wmr 3D Printed ( should have gotten the regular one for ascetics but both models work the same ). The video on this one looked pretty good and I was going to put a scope on it so I wanted to keep the weight down. I removed the stock one with a spanner and the MAGLOAD installs hand tight. The info on their site about what you get is a little wrong, including the insert/instructions but I emailed them and they're going to correct. I'd rather have a semi working muzzle break (not allot of gases to move from the .22lr round) than the stock flash hider. The 16" barrel is threaded so no worries there.
  5. Safety Selector: BAD-***-LITE Lightweight Ambidextrous Safety Selector RED, but used the center piece from their BAD-***-PRO M&P15-22 Reversible 90/60 Ambidextrous Safety Selector. I left it at 90 because I'd rather have a longer throw but 60 seemed to work. Make sure to use their metal pin as the standard one is plastic. There was a great comment to a video on how to push it out without taking off the grip.
  6. Magazine Release: BAD-EMMR Large Enhanced Modular Magazine Release Limited Edition RED. I was keeping with the theme. MAGLOAD has a nice extended safety but it's a little flimsily printed so kept with Aluminum and same color as the safety.
  7. Extractor and Firing Pin: Volquartsen Exact Edge Extractor for S&W M&P 15-22 & Volquartsen SureStrike Firing Pin for M&P 15-22. Superb stuff and didn't want to waste time trying another brand. Watched a few videos and did it myself. After reading and watching some of the issues people had with extraction, this was a no brainer.
  8. Trigger: Allot of options as most of the AR15 triggers would have worked. Had a look and actually ordered "CMC AR15/10 Single Stage Trigger – Flat" and their anti-walk pins as well ( you need slightly longer pings as the M&P 15-22 lower is slightly wider ) but returned them both when I saw a stupid special on labor day for a "Geissele Super Dynamic 3 Gun (SD-3G) Trigger" for $160 and it's the same trigger as my DD4v7 so wanted to keep the feel the same. It's way overkill and more than I was planning on spending but about the best you can buy and the quality and workmanship is top notch. I went with their Trigger & Hammer Pins For COLT 901 which are longer and the suggested kit for the trigger over the anti-walk pins. From the videos I watched I could have tried to put the trigger in without removing the safety but it was really simple to get the safety in and out so I just removed it before installing the trigger. There are a few ways to hold the lower/trigger when installing which made it fairly easy to get placed and the 901 pins pushed through under load. I swapped in the 3-3.5lb trigger spring that comes with the trigger.
  9. Charging handle: I really wanted to go with the Radian Weapons Raptor-LT with Talon Safety Selector S&W M&P 15-22, but they don't make them anymore so don't waste your time trying to find one. It would have been a simpler buy and cheaper than having to buy the 2 seperatly, but Radian said they are no longer making for the 15-22. So went with a "Next Level Armament 15-22 Ambidextrous Charge Handle, M&P, Black".
  10. Scope Mount: "easy" choice would have been the "Aero Precision Ultralight 30mm Scope Mount" either in standard, extended or SPR. I probably would have gone with the SPR @ +/- 3.27oz, but I read some people didn't like the way the rings clamp to the scope with the skrews on the base. Eventually decided on the Burris AR-P.E.P.R.™ Scope Mount. It's a beast ( heavy ) but I liked the choice to use the picatinny ring tops to mount a mini red-dot if I ever wanted to. The Burris combo of the scope mount, Fastfire red dot and Burris RT-6 1-6x24 was pretty cool, but did some research on the scope and wanted to go with something else. The glass on the Burris sounded and looked pretty wicked. Also the Fastfire red dot was way expensive which made the combo less attractive. I also didn't go with the QD model. Once it's on and zero'ed...it's not coming off. Also picked up a "Primary Arms Magnification Lever for SLx6 1-6x24 FFP, SLx6 1-6x24 FFP, SLx8 1-8x24 SFP Scopes, Black, 210001" as the PA scope doesn't have a throw lever like the Burris RT-6 1-6x24 and without it's a hard twist and easy to fumble.
  11. Scope: After ALLOT of researching I eventually decided I would most likely not "move parts" between rifles so decided on the "Primary Arms 1-6X24mm SFP Gen III Scope w/ Patented ACSS 22LR Reticle, Black, PA1-6X24SFP-ACSS-22LR". The ACSS reticle is setup for the .22lr and the PA scopes now come with a lifetime warranty. Everyone seemed to love it so it helped make the decision. Scope and mount were the more expensive items but found them all on special, free shipping etc.etc.
  12. Loader: Picked up a McFadden Lightnin' Grip Loader 22lr and the (#1)MP15-22 / Plinker Adapter for the standard M&P 15-22 mags Sprayed some Hornady 9990 One Shot Gun Cleaner with DynaGlide Plus into the tubes to keep them lubed. I use the Hornady 9990 One Shot Gun Cleaner with DynaGlide Plus, Hopped #9, BreakFree CLR and Birchwood Casey Gun Scrubber on all my stuff depending on how deep the clean is and how many rounds I've shot between cleaning. To oil the DD4V7 I'll use the Hoppes, the M&P gets the CLR, both get the One Shot when cleaning. The 1911s get the full treatment. I also bought the adapters for the G44 and Walther 1911 GC .22lr.
  13. Magazines: waited for a special and bought a few M&P 15-22 standard ones. They're a little pricey but there are some good specials that come and go and I like to try and stay true to the manufacturer when it comes to things like that. MAGLOAD make a "S&W 15-22 +6 Magazine Extension / Bumper" in a few different colors to bring the mags up to 31 rounds per, but they're more than the mags themselves so passd on that until I can justify it......
  14. Sling: I use Ferro Concepts Slingster for all the toys with Tacticon QD Sling Mounts. Cheaper than the Magpules and never had an issue.
  15. Rail covers: Magpul MAG603-GRY M-LOK Rail Cover Type 2 AR-Platform Gray.

I've been looking for some RED extended take down pins for the M&P 15-22. But haven't figured out yet if the extended pins for a regular AR would work. There is allot of stale info and posts out there, so holding on that one for the time being.

It's a tack driver! and all came together very nicely and as planned. The setup has exceeded my expectations and the only issues I've had is a few bad rounds in a few thousand fired. It's been eating everything I've thrown at it without issue and extraction is pretty violent.

All screws got loctite when/if needed, care was taken when fitting everything, and the right tools were used for each component. Slow and steady wins the race (sometimes).

This was built with "buy once cry once" in-mind. I don't have allot of time to be dealing with problems so spending a little extra to not have them was "ok" for me.....IMO you could easily just replace the extractor ( highly recommended ) and probably have allot of fun with minimal issues straight out of the box ( comes with Magpul polymer flip up irons ).

I definitely went a little overboard, but it's an amazingly reliable and fun rifle to take to the range, and is setup for pretty much anything. In <3 months it's all paid for itself shooting .22lr over 5.56. Currently paying +/- $0.07 for 22lr shipped and +/- $0.50 for 5.56...so ammo wise it's a no brainer and lets us shoot allot more for way less.

Hope this is interesting and/or helps someone out there, this is hours of research and video watching and re-watching before pulling the trigger. If anyone has any questions let me know and I'd be happy to share any info I still have noted.

That's a lot of work for a 22 AR.

When I wanted a 22 AR, I ordered a CMMG standard AR lower that will accept any upper, with a CMMG complete 22 dedicated upper.

Stamped it as a SBR and had the barrel cut down to 11.5".

Nothing fancy, but fun and cheap to shoot.

You CAN NOT have that long of a post explaining all the upgrades and not post pics! That's just wrong....

AR-15 platforms, regardless of caliber, are money pits...but fun money pits!

Plenty of 'upgrades' on this one but I'm just too lazy to list them all by typing.

Update

Put about 2k rounds through the build and have had 2 misfires and 1 failure to feed. Zero other issues which is quite surprising. I thought there would be more issues with this one, but it's ticking along.

CCI Standard Velocity (40g) 100 - $6.98 (free shipping less tax)
CCI Mini-Mag (40g) 100 - $7.40 (free shipping less tax)
AGUILA SUPER EXTRA (40g) 50 - $12 - had to buy a box at the range

I'll try some other ammo brands over time, but happy using CCI.

I just used a Dremel tool with an appropriate size drill bit and pointed grinding heads and hogged it out enough for the QD sling mount to fit through.

For the front I used an M-Lok swivel/bipod mount.
