Default My new M&P15-22

I bought the first one that my local dealer got in. I also had a Colt "AR-22" and a 10/22 configured in the ArchAngel stock. While the Colt was plenty accurate, it was frustrating in that many parts are non-standard, like the pistol grip, trigger group, and operations are somewhat different like the safety selector (180 vs 90 degrees), bolt release (non-functional), and take-down and cleaning. I really liked it though, until I got the S&W. The trigger pull is lighter and smoother, operations are more similar to the standard AR platforms, and it is generally more solid feeling even though it is lighter.

Bottom line, I realized I would now shoot the Colt very seldom, so I traded it for a GSG-5, which is also very nice in its own ways. I have also ordered more mags from S&W for the M&P today, which they priced at $20 each plus shipping. They are back-ordered, but should arrive in 2 weeks or so. I highly recommend this rifle -- it shoots accurately, and unlike the Colt, it eats all brands of ammo that I have tested (Federal, Winchester, CCI, and even Remington bulk).

I'm still waiting to get my SIG522LR. I didn't even know about this one until today. Keep filing the range reports.

Thanks 460v. It is similar blogs like this that have helped me to decide which way to go on certain purchases. If it hadn't have been for all the nightmare situations that I read about of folks having to send their Colts into Umarex for repair (and some of them multiple times), I might have kept that rifle anyway just for the sake of the name. I'm glad I traded it for the GSG-5, which I researched quite a bit. It's nice that we can all help each other out in this way.

My bottom line is that I feel S&W did an excellent and well-thought-out job with the M&P15-22. I've added a Magpul stock, a Hogue pistol grip, Ergo ladder rail covers, and a Leupold 1x14 Tactical Prismatic optic that I just love (and I also own some Trijicons, so I am quite impressed with Leupold's response to this category).

Deerslayer, would you mind posting a picture of your 15-22? I would love to see the mods. How do you change the grip?

Photos are up, gents.

Mattz -- the pistol grip is a single screw attachment, just like a standard AR. I used a long-handled Allen wrench to take it out. Be careful not to lose the star lock washer. Grips like the Ergo and the Magpul MOE won't fit too well since the high backstrap on those grips does not fit flush with the rifle (as it does on a standard AR). It may not look the best, but it would work. A better look and fit is something like the Hogue or Tango Down AR pistol grips, since they have no raised backstrap.

Deerslayer, what do the covers for the handguards do? They look like another layer of rails, but I'm not sure I'm seeing them correctly. Mcinfantry, we need to see that setup!

The rail covers cover up the sharp edges on the rails. Covers are a lot easier on the hand and provide an improved grip...at least for some people.

The plastic rail on my 15-22 wasn't nearly as sharp as some of the metal rails I handled/gripped while shooting. You might not NEED the rail covers on a 15-22 but, they do add a more finished look.

For those who need pics...here's mine...

DSMC, what brand are those? Any idea if they come in black? Your stock looks like the one deerslayer used, what is different/better about it? I like the two-tone theme you've got going on there!

The rail covers are Magpul XTM's. They do come in black.

It looks like Deerslayer installed a Magpul CTR stock. Mine is the lower cost MOE stock. They are the same stocks...except that the CTR has an additional locking lever that the MOE stock does not have. Basically, the CTR has no movement at all while the MOE has a bit of movement. Not as much as a M4 style stock but, there's some movement.

I went with the FDE because I haven't used it on any of my AR's...since I don't live in a desert. They're all either black or Foliage Green. It makes it a lot easier to pick the 15-22 out from a pack of similar looking rifles...

DSMC, did you have to trim the rail covers, or are they custom sized for each gun/model?

I didn't cut the covers. They come in packs of 4 and 12. The 4 pack has 8 pieces...one upper and lower per each section. They snap together over the rail.

The 4 pack will cover one side of a carbine rail, while six sections per side is required for the 15-22's rail.

Nice rig DMSC! My pistol grip and ladder rail covers are now OD Green. I'll be swapping out my black CTR buttstock for an OD Green as well. I think two-tone is a nice look. My Stag AR is fully loaded and all black, so I figured I'd give this one more of a custom look. I like your short Tango Down vertical grip. I've been on the fence as to whether I should add one or not. Yours looks so good I think I will now!

Gents, I also added a Midwest Industries (MI) snap-in sling mount to the rear of my left side rail. That way I can transfer my 2-point sling from my Stag AR to this rifle. I attach to the MI mount and the Magpul CTR mount via the push-button sling attachments. Easy on, easy off.

I would never have guessed that wasn't all one piece. A quick zoom reveals seams, but they do look tight. Thanks for the info.

I purchased my M&P 15-22 on Aug. 21st. Ran several hundred various rounds thru it. Had an out of battery round with a Federal 810. Took out my extractor, spring and another small part. Returned firearm to store 8-28. They contacted S&W CS for parts. Hope S&W has spare parts available. Will update when rifle repaired.

Received a call from my local gun shop...finally got mine in late yesterday afternoon after a 5 week waits! I'll give summary review on Thursday after my Wednesday night range outing.

If it is anything like my M&P15 VTAC...I'll love it!

I finally nailed one down today. Paid $400.00 plus tax and title, dumped a cheap BSA reflex red dot on it for the moment, cleaned, lubed and off to the range tomorrow!

Here is another question for you guys that have a new AR15-22 how in the world are you cleaning that tiny feed ramp? I ran a bunch of ammo through mine the other day and I have yet to successfully clean the feed ramp. I guess as a bigger question I need some help with the whole cleaning process I cleaned and cleaned but things still felt gritty when I was done.

Thanks

hey all, i just happened to find about this gun in one of my magazines the other day, so i went to the local Academy Sports & Outdoors tdoay, didnt think they would actaully have one in stock...but they did, gave me the price of 449, and i was like wow, then he got one out of the box for me, and i fell in love...and couldnt give it back, and had to buy it, hehe, ive always wanted an AR15 type gun,and this one felt just right holding it, i'll be shooting it soon. Where do you guys get your gear for it, straps, sights, lasers, etc. Thanks.

Welcome TxShooter. The answer probably depends where in TX you are located. Any light, laser, or optic that can mount on a 1913 Picatinny rail can mount on this one, hence any gun shops that sell parts for ARs or tactical rifles should have the kind of things you are looking for.

Local gun shows (particularly Saxet) are you best bet for widest range of choices. At those shows look for the tables of GDS Enterprises. They have lots of choices, among many others. The butt-stock (Mil-spec, not commercial) pistol grip, and even trigger group are all interchangeable with the M&P15-22.

A rail-mounted sling mount can allow you to install a 2-point sling. With the right butt-stock, you could even mount a single-point sling. You will love this rifle. It eats every brand of ammo I have run through it thus far.

Congrats on your new rifle. They are a blast to shoot. I could not shoot mine only 10 rounds and stop.

Many tactical accessories available. Gun shows good source. So is AR15.com.

Get a couple of Federal Bulk Packs of .22s and have a blast. Be sure to only load the magazine one at a time like the manual says for best feeding results.

I just received word that my CC was charged by S&W today for the two mags I ordered from almost two weeks ago. I have yet to get the gun since I am on a small wait list so hopefully in a month or less.

But I was wondering what single point sling would work with the M&P15-22?

I was looking at some blackhawk ones but I am unaware if these will work. Do I need just a single point sling or do I need a single point sling and a single point adapter?

Anyone thread there barrel yet for a silencer or Flash hider?

Edit: Here were the ones I was looking at. There is an adapter there along with some single point slings.

Blackhawk Tactical Slings

Thanks!

ko41 Haven't heard from you, how is the skunk count?
I'm up to 2000 rounds no problems, very pleased.
Just got word from S&W, spare mags are on the way.
Hope S&W makes one of these in a 17hmr.

I was skunked for a couple of days. The skunks just don't seem to be on the same schedule as I am.

While the coffee was brewing at about 4:45 a.m. today I went for a walk around the yard and M&P 15-22 skunk no.6 was taken from about 30 yards.
The tools of the trade with no.6; M&P 15-22, Federal 36gr HP, NCStar green laser, Streamlight Strion LED light, skunk picker-upper-flinger.

I got mine today after waiting several weeks, my dealer got 3 in and I was first on his list $369.00 plus tax. I'll take to the range next week after the holiday and see how it shoots. I have a Colt M4 which shoots great but lacks some features I like. You can't take the bolt and carrier out of the Colt wheareas the M&P 15 22 takes down just like any other AR. Also the bolt stop on the Colt is just cosmetic, on the M&P it really works. Range report to follow next week.

Congrats on your M&P 15 22.

$369. is by far the cheapest price I have seen yet. Thought that was cost.

In general, are you guys ordering yours from the S&W website, ordering from dealers, or just finding them at shops? I have been looking everywhere and there is just NO sign of them in Ohio. It is driving me nuts. Every shop is trying to push the Colt on me, but its just not what i want.

i seen a ad about them in one of my magazines week or so ago, just happened to go into my Local Academy store yesterday, and asked if they had them, i just wanted to look and see what there price was. He said they showed to have them in stock, and sure enough, he pulled out the box, let me take a look at the gun, and feel in love with it, lol. And said I'LL TAKE IT. I didnt really think they would have them in stock. i Was lucky i guess.

Seems like guys are just "lucking" in to them at the local gun stores, or maybe some are finding them on auction sites like Gun Broker. Large stores like Cabelas and Academy appear to be getting a supply of these guns. Until the supply channels get filled up, it is pretty much hit or miss. Might be a good idea to get on a list with two or three gun stores and maybe one will get one for you. Have you tried Vance in Columbus?

Also go to the S&W web site and find the dealers in OH. Start calling them and you might get a hit.

Good luck with your search.

Anyone mounting a sling to theirs yet?

I would like to have a single point sling but not sure what will work with the 15-22.

Anyone got any ideas?
