Default M&P 15-22 Results, Post 'em here. I got Mine!!

Bought mine yesterday and tried out. I took off open sights, put on E-O Tech and bipod. Sighted in and shot over 300 rounds. NOT one misfeed, gun performed perfectly and accurately. No problems with the Easy loading magazine. The wife and I had a ball picking off empty shotshell hulls at 25 yds, as fast as you pull the trigger. This one has my 5 STAR rating.
I paid $459.00. Oh ya , the wife couldn't believe I bought 2 of them. I knew what I was doing, now we can both shoot, and I don't need to share.
I tried everything in 22's, including some I found on the ground someone discarded, it shot them all. Let me know if you find any brand or velocity that this gun doesn't like.
This is a great and fun gun, just like this forum!

Does this use the BlackDog/Ciener type mags, or the same as Colt 22 rifle or S&W own type of mags?

I have a Ciener kit for my AR, but may sell it and get the S&W 15-22, but I would like to use my existing mags if possible, if not, I'll sell them too.

Very nice!

Can you clarify for me something about the magazines?

I was told by a guy that the "magazine" can't be removed from the rifle, instead a smaller "real" magazine is what you remove, leaving the larger "magazine" attached to the rifle at all times.

I then heard on here that the entire magazine setup is removed like a standard AR.

Which is is?

Magazines are S&W design- one piece. Mine is the 25 round, has buttons on each side to hold spring tension for easy loading. Mag comes apart to clean. Also stays in gun or I have had no problems with the mag.
Shot another 300 rounds again last night, total 600 rounds No misfires or misfeeds. Very accurate.

I saw one Friday for $429.00 looked pretty interesting, very light. I think polymer makes sense for a .22 rifle and I sure like the all steel barrel. I'm supposing by the markings it's made by S&W in the US. According to the dealer, spare magazines are non-existent for the time being.

The entire magazine is removed just as with a standard AR.

Does this have the size and feel of an AR, or does it feel like a toy?

Is the lower a standard AR lower that will take a 223 upper, or is it propritary to the 22lr upper only?

The 15-22 will not interchange upper or lower with an AR. It is lighter in weight. If it is considered a toy, than it is an accurate and fun toy.
I believe S&W's intent was to designed a .22 cal rifle that performs with accuracy that has a platform to add all the AR goodies.
Cleaned last night, shot some more again yesterday. I'm now up to 1000 rounds, no misfeeds or misfires, or problems. I shot some old 22's in it that you could hear the difference in shells(pop-bang-light pop). My buddies couldn't believe the gun functioned perfectly and accurately with these rounds. It eats what you feed it.

Jeff

Thanks for the informative post and great website summary of the .22 version. I have mine on order and expect a 2 week wait.

Three weeks ago I purchased an M&P15 "VTAC" version (Viking Tactics) which is the most difficult version to find ($1,645). Absolutely the best rifle I have ever fired! Could not be happier with the S&W AR...well worth the money.

This .22 version has a great price...lots of bang for the buck!

Thanks again for the review.

I bought one yesterday and love it. It feels awesome and looks mean for a "stock" 22 rifle. I haven't got to shoot mine yet, but from what I have read I will be more than happy.

Does anyone know where to get extra magazines yet?

Have had my M&P-22 for a few days. Have yet to get a full mag out of this without a failure. Have tried CCI, Remington and Winchester. Nothing works. Does not eject the empty case, most of the time. Its going back to the store tomorrow.

My local gun shop was unaware of the new M&P .22 version. He had to call the distributor for info. S&W will probably promote the item once production level is higher. They have it featured on their website...KICK BRASS!

GunBroker.com has a .22 version for sale today. Search "M&P15" and you will locate it toward the bottom of the page.

I spoke to my gun shop owner this afternoon and he has had 4 more buyers for this new rifle this past week...looks like it will be hot!!

I finally got out to the range with my new 15-22. I HATE when life gets in the way of having fun!

Let me start by stating something obvious...always read the manual when you buy a new model firearm. I've gotten into the habit of NOT doing that. After all...a 1911 is a 1911 or a Glock is Glock...

I had several issues with the first mag of 25 rounds. I had multiple FTF's and a FTE...along with one destroyed round. I was thinking that I had managed to get one of the dud guns!

Of course, I started searching for the reason why I was having issues. I started loading the mag the same way I had dome with the first mag full. Pull the follower down far enough to dump 5-6 rounds in at a time.

Well....WRONG!

The way the rounds stack into the 15-22's mag is that looking from the of the rear of the mag, the rounds appear as though you are looking at a double stack style mag. The rounds are laid on top of the follower in a V, when looking at them from the top. One round to the left, the next to the right.

When you load the mag, you must load it one round at a time...just as it states in the manual. I was able to load two at a time if I was careful but, just pulling the follower down and dropping in rounds got me nothing but heart ache!

Once I had the mag (there's something not right about only having ONE magazine!) loaded the proper way, I had ZERO issues. She fed and extracted the next couple hundred rounds just fine.

My gun's trigger measures 6lbs but has a nice clean break. I was able to shoot sub 2" off hand groups when firing fast...with some slow fire groups that had 3-4 rounds touching and 10-15 round group size around an inch, from 15-20 yards. Not too shabby for having a blind man pulling the trigger. I'm sure that from a rest, the 15-22 will do a lot better.

Field stripping and cleaning was easy, too. Pretty much normal AR.

One thing of note...I installed a Magpul MOE grip on mine. There is a gap between the lower receiver and the top of the grip...at the part of the grip that's above the web of the shooting hand. That part of the 15-22's lower receiver does not extend down as far as a standard AR lower. It doesn't affect shooting or function but, it looks awful!

Other than that cosmetic OOPS, I'm very pleased with the 15-22!

That is really reasonable. I will have to pick up a couple of extras when they become available.

I spoke to my local gunshop regarding the M&P15 .22 version availability late yesterday afternoon. His Minneapolis disributor stated this new item is the most sought-after rifle by his gun dealers during the past 10 days. S&W has not really promoted this rifle yet other than their website coverage. Another 30-day wait for me.

Extra .22 magazine pricing seems good to me!

HOT! HOT! HOT!

I just checked GunBroker.com for all M&P15 listings. 90% of the M&P15's have "no bids". The one listing of the .22 version has 11 bids already...up to $425!

Just got to get one!

If it helps at all, it was in dear ole' Illinois. I didn't watch to see if it sold, but I'm guessing it didn't.

Got mine! They had them at Cabela's for $469.99 plus you could use a $20 off coupon. I hope to get out to the range this weekend I picked up two brands of ammo, CCI HV and Federal, hoping they will both work. Now I want another magazine.

I'm sure S&W would take care of you if you call them

Latest update, We have shot over 1500 rounds, not one problem.
Now for the bad stuff, you have to have spare magazines and boy does this gun go thru the ammo.
I ordered two spare magazines from S & W on-line yesterday and picked up two bricks of 22's. I'm gone back out and have some more fun!!
Hope you all get yours soon.

Hey guys range update I finally got to shoot the new toy today and it is a lot of fun! We were only able to put about 75 rounds down range do to timing but had no problems feeding or ejecting. Just for reference I did clean things before the first firing and lubed things down a bit I loaded the magazine one at a time as suggested by another post here. I used the HV Federals in the bulk 500 pack from Wal-Mart and some of the CCI mini-mag HV. I agree with the above post extra mags would come in handy. I can’t wait to shoot again my son did most of it today.

Just bought a brick of Widcats to tryout. I shot the first mag, no problem. I loaded back up and left the wife shoot, bang, bang, KABOOM, sounded like double charge. Wife was ok other than being a bit P*@#ssed off. No damage to the gun. The fire case rim swelled and split open. Loaded up shot 2 more mags, gun works fine. I don't believe this is why they call'em Widcats.
Went home got Winchester online, I just found out they have a recall on certain lot numbers of Wildcats. Reason for recall__Double charge. I checked and my ammo was Not on the recall lot. I will be calling Winchester tomorrow to share with them our experience.
This is why you must be careful. Wife and I had a LUCKY day.

Having a .22LR case burst, though not common...is not unheard of. We have them from time to time at our Steel Challenge matches.

Not meaning to rain on anyone's parade, but aside from the mag capacity, is there anything this can do that my 10/22 can't in the way of fun plinking?? For the price you paid, I could buy 2 10/22's

I have 3 10/22, each is set up differently.

Other than being different than a 10/22, the 15-22 operates the same as an AR so, it makes a pretty good training aid for those who own and shoot AR's. It's also a good gun to introduce shooters to the AR platform.

Of course, it's a lot less expensive to feed than a .223 AR.

I agree the 10/22 is cheaper and has a very good reputation but in my case I wanted the AR15-22 so I could familiarize myself with the AR15 before I buy a .223 version of it. Also I like the looks of the M&P AR15-22 and I liked the way it felt in my hands over the 10/22. If you like the 10/22 I would buy it in a heartbeat.

By the time you outfit a 10/22 to have the same functionality as an AR15, you will have spent as much or more then the MP15-22.

Plus the M&P is much cooler.

Since when has need ever had anything to do with our gun addiction? I long since lost count of the number of guns that I own and have owned, but that doesn't stop me from looking. My present addiction is about 1 per week. Sometimes I trade sometimes I don't.

As much as I love the 10/22, and would NEVER part with the one I have, I cannot stand that they are painting the stainless steel now. I was going to buy one for my kids and put it away, but I refuse to unless I can find a new/old stock where the stainless doesn't have paint over it. On top of that, the 15-22 has a "match grade" barrel, which would technically make it more comparable to the 10/22T. Last I checked, those were around $400+.
