M&P Durability

Just got my second M&P...this one in 9mm and full size.

Great debate between GLOCK and M&P as to which is most durable. Heard stories of a GLOCK going well over 500,000 rounds.

Anyone shot the M&P that much?

Got the M&P over the GLOCK since it can be made to fit ME and looks where I look and shoots without a lot of muzzel flip ALL of which the GLOCK did not having going for it.

Thanks for any help here.

That's only because Glock shooters tend to need 500,000 rounds to hit anything ;-)

Oh, did I say that out loud...

Shouldn't the issue be how durable does your pistol need to be?
Then find the best one out there that meets that requirement?
What good is most durable pistol in the world if it doesn't fit your hand or has a terrible trigger?

Bushpilot, you'll tend to shoot considerably more with the new 9mm I believe. I have both Glock in 40SW and a M&P in 9mm and I have been putting a considerable dent in my 9mm ammo stash.:) Hope you enjoy your new addition.

PAPA777 is right.

I own several different makes and calibers of revolvers and pistols and do tend to shoot the 9's more than anything.

Ammo is still fairly cheap for them at WalMart and you can find some excellent buys on surplus.

9mm can be found just about anywhere in the world in my experience and, in the opinion of one of my survivilst friends, when TSHTF we will still find 9mm when .40 and .45 are gone.

BTW, a good friend, who just retired as the state bullistics expert for our state was a devoted .45 man years ago.....no use for the 9mm......with the advent of the new HP 9mm rounds he now carries nothing but a 9mm. Says it does the job and very well.

Thanks for your comments and suggestions guys.

Gun writer Chuck Taylor (one of the few writers I respect) did a six or seven year test on a Glock 17. Did all sorts of horrible things to it and ran an ungodly amount of ammo thru it over the years before declareing it a reliable firearm. Chuck is a hard man to convince. It was his approval that had me try a Glock. Perhaps a web search can turn this up, worth reading. Maybe he will run a test of the M&P? I did not want to wait a few years for Chuck so I went ahead and bought two M&P's.

CT kinda blew his credibility and an editorship some years back by allegedly publishing a test of a gun he'd never actually had posession of according to the manufacturer.

Don't know the grimy details, simply read the straight reportage of his "no longer being associated with..." and the reason. Could have been an instance of somehow getting a toolroom prototype that wasn't made of appropriate materials for actual use...which would explain the lousy performance. However, if a product tanks, you owe the manufactuer the courtesy of discussing the issue prior to publishing the report.

There's been at least one incidient where a publication actually did firing tests, which went superbly, of a demo piece. When they called to congratulate the manufacturer-prepublication- on an outstanding product, the manufacturer was horrified that they'd shot it. It wasn't intended for actual use.

To put 500,000 rounds of 9mm through one of my MP's at the old Wal Mart price ($19.97 + .0825 state tax) for WWB, FMJ, in 100 round boxes, would cost me $108,100.00 (rounded off). And recently they went up another $1.00 per box to $20.97. But as soon as I win the lottery I'll give it a try.;)

I personally doubt that there will be a significant difference in the longevityu of these two (Glock vs M&P). I have ans still do shoot a Glock 17 but prefer the ergonomics of the S&W 99 or M&P. My S&W 99 is slightly more accurate than my M&P9PRo which has a longer barrel.

The Glock will always be known as the standard by which all polymer pistols are judged. Although I think the Glock is a very reliable pistol and has an excellent track record for longevity, I find it hard to believe that one went to 500,000 rounds.

The M&P is quickly becoming known as a good polymer pistol. In my opinion it has the best ergonomics and accuracy of any of the other pistols in it's class.
