Default M&P Armorers Course

I just finished with the M&P armorers course today that was hosted by the local Sheriff's Office. I've been carrying a Glock at work, and have almost no experience with the M&P. After this class, I'd have to say that the M&P seems like a great service weapon. Many of the parts resembled the internals from the Glock - especially the striker and striker channel. In all, it is a fairly easy weapon to work on. Whats nice is many of the parts never need to be completely disassembled to be cleaned like on the Glock. We were actually dicouraged from completely disassembling the weapon for annual cleaning and evaluation.

The class was put on by Mark Dix, and he was an excellent instructor.
He had examples of everything, including the frame mounted 1911 style safeties, which I think like now after working with one.

I actually only have two complaints. My biggest would have to be the firing pin safety/plunger. The only way to get it out for replacement or cleaning is to remove the rear sight. Granted, this probably wouldn't have to be done very often - if ever, but it's still a major pain to do.
The other complaint would be the use of roll pins.

I'd recommend this class to anyone thinking about going. The materials are easy to understand - especially for non-mechanical types like me, and the instruction is top notch.

How do they recommend cleaning the internals without disassembly? Gunscrubber, then re-lube or something else?

Thanks for the review.

I was speaking with the S&W rep a couple of weeks ago about obtaining M&Ps for my SMALL PD. Not only are the dept. prices on M&Ps ridiculous, they also include (1) free Armorer's Course with the purchase so a member of the dept. can go at no charge AND they're approved for POST credits. I can tell you I was literally drooling on my phone as the rep. told me this. S&W is definitely a motivated seller and wants these things in-service badly.

May I ask what prompted you to take the course (dept. transitioning, etc.)?

We allow the weapon, but so far only one officer has bought one. The S.O. hosted the class and offered one chair to us for free, so I volunteered to go. I've been thinking about buying one and figured I would use this to check it out.

As far as the cleaning goes, we were told for the slide to just remove the striker and clean it and the channel, and for the frame, just removing the locking block and trigger bar assembly for cleaning, and leaving the rest in the gun and cleaning around it. He specifically warned us that Gunscrubber, carb cleaner, or engine degreaser was not to be used.

Do any of the LEO's have any idea how a "civi" would go about getting into one of these? Or is it something we'd have to visit the Mother ship to attend?
Thanks!

RedBerens, thanks for the info. I have been to Glock armorer school and the striker assembly removal on the S&W is somewhat similar to the Glock's. I imagine that is the most crucial area to be detail stripped and cleaned. I doubt I'll attempt removal of the locking block & trigger bar until I go to school, or at least become more familiar with disassembly of the M&P.

jr19703, I believe they make a type of Gunscrubber that is polymer safe. In any case, I've seen the original stuff used on polymer guns sparingly with no ill effects. I'm not advocating it, just saying I've seen it done.

I am becoming really fond of the M&P series and plan on looking into attending an armorer's school even though I'll have to do it on my own time and own dime since my agency doesn't authorize them as duty guns.

For those of you who are not fortunate enough to get to a course, Burwell gunsmithing has a great powerpoint presentation on tearing the M&P down to do a trigger job. Having done that work ( including removing the rear sight to remove the striker block plunger), I can tell you the presentation is pretty thourough.
No afiliation yada, yada....

As I recall, the use of roll pins was required in order to qualify for any future DOD contract considerations.
