Default Caliber change from 40 S&W to 9mm

Hey all-

I have been thinking about getting a M&P in 40 after installing an Apex Tactical kit in my wifes M&P 9mm. After looking at the parts lists and schematics I was thinking of getting a 9L slide to go with it since as far as I can tell, the two slides would swap on the same frame only requiring different magazines. That got me thinking that an aftermarket long 40 barrel would possibly fit and function in the 9L slide. All of the functional parts of the 9mm and 40 S&W pistols share the same part #'s except for the magazines and slide assemblys. Even the extractors have the same part numbers.

Does anyone see any flaws in this plan? Can a 9mm slide take a 40 S&W barrel and function?

I would think the breechface would cut slighty differant between the two. The factory barrels are larger at the muzzle than the rest of the barrel, you would have to know what the aftermarket dimensions are.

A 40 barrel will not work in a 9mm slide for the reason mentioned above, you can get a 9mm conversion barrel to use in a 40 but they may not be 100% reliable. The extractors are the same but may require adjusting differently to work in each slide.
