Unhappy Compact M&P problem..HELP!

I have both full size and compact M&P 40. I have no issues with the full size but the compact is giving me grief.
During the recoil of the compact the I often hit the mag release button with the "meaty" part of my weak (left) hand, which disengages the mag, and prevents the next round from chambering. I feel lilke the mag release button is too sensitive. I've contacted Smith and Wesson and they advised me to swap the mag release to the other side of the pistol! .. I need suggestions cause I would love to keep this pistol.

I also have the M&P40c and love it. What I have noticed is the mag release is sticking out to the point that anything touching it will release the mag. I had to trim a holster so that it would not dump my magazine. I had to use a sharp knife and removed some plastic so it would not stick out pass the housing. It worked. I figured if I needed to sell the gun that item could be replaced with out much cost. It doesn't take much to make it release the mag. I would suggest you do what is needed to make it work for you. I swapped my release to the other side and use my trigger finger to release it. I have a problem with my thumb and I can work it better on the right side. I hope you work it out.

I have the M&P 9c and I haven't had any problems. I'm 6'3" with pretty large hands and I shoot the 9c at least twice a week.

On the other hand (no pun intended) it does seem to be an issue discussed on the M&P site and the solution for many appears to be to change the mag release button to the other side. I don't think you could get a stronger spring.

I just looked at the way I grip the pistol and my left hand doesn't really come that close to the release, so you could look at adjusting your grip.

Hope it works out

Dave

I would first look to see where your grip on the full size version and compact differ. If you can adapt your grip on the compact more to what you do with the full size, it could solve your problem.
Swapping the magazine release button to the other side is a viable idea but it requires that you retrain yourself. Personnally, I like that method however it's a personnal preference and I can understand if you choose it's not for you.
A stronger spring is a great idea if you can find it. Altering the shape and length of the button would be my last resort option - especially if you carry the pistol for serious social use.

I just received a new mag catch for my M&P 9 Compact from S&W, along with the new style striker. You might look at you mag catch..there is a very small number 1 inside a circle on the side of the plastic. You have to remove it from the gun to see it.

There is also a new style striker for the M&P's because the original ones had reports of breakage. Info on the M&P Forum for that as well.

The part numbers on my packing slip that came 3 weeks ago were:

27789000, Magazine Catch, Rev. F

279770000, M&P Striker Assembly, Rev. B

I replaced both the striker and mag catch on a four year old Compact...but never had a problem with the gun....just wanted the latest revision parts.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I am a police officer and carry the 40c off duty. It is imperitive that I have a dependable weapon on me at all times. I love both my M&Ps and hate that this is happening. I bought them as a set so the mags and ammo would be interchangable. As you could imaging im frustrated and as of now can't comfortably carry and depend on the compact. Gotta find a fix or get something else.

One other suggestion is to try a different size backstrap...might make a difference in how you grip the gun.

Default Thank YOU!

I called S&W again and asked about the mag catch problem. Apparently the mag catch is too short and is allowing the mag to drop with little or no pressure on the release button and also while firing. So maybe it wasn't me hitting the button on the recoil .... they're sending me new catches for both my pistols. Guess we'll find out next week when they get here!

Thanks for all the help... I was about to trade both my M&P's for Glocks!

I have both the full size and compact 40's. The full size is an issued duty weapon and I loved it when we were issued them. Although I noted during our first range firing, that the range officer cautioned us as to allowing our grip to overlay the magazine release.

He said that it could cause the weapon to drop the mag and that we would not be given alibi's if that happened. I did not have any problems either firing or qualifying with the M&P 40 and loved the weapon by the end of the day.

The problems came when I attempted to carry the weapon off duty in my waist band. I have carried both revolvers and autos in my waist band for years off duty. I carry an auto on my right hip, just to the right of my back pants pocket, with the clip facing to the side as opposed to facing the small of my back.

This has always been the most comfortable carry for me, for both auto pistols and revolvers..

As I carried the M&P 40 in this fashion, I soon discovered that the magazines was continually disengaging and popping the clip out of the pistol. Which is not a good thing if you might need your weapon quickly. I got use to reaching back and frequently checking the clip and often having to re-seat it into the pistol.

About three weeks ago, I bought the M&P 40c compact and once again, I love how the pistol feels and shoots. But when I carry it in my waist band? The exact same problem arises. The clip releases based upon nothing more than the pressure of my waist band. And now I have discovered another problem with the compact. I purchased a nylon ankle holster for the compact? And I have the same problem with the clip disengaging while seated in the ankle holster. Apparently the pistol riding next to my ankle with the mag release up against my leg is what causes it.

So, after examining both pistols and trying a number of trial and error things to activate the magazine releases, I have determined that there is obviously a problem with these magazine releases on both models. Simply put, the retention springs on the mag releases are too weak and this causes the release to be super sensitive to pressure and release the mag. Almost any pressure on the magazine release and the magazine releases every time.

So I contacted S&W directly and explained the problem. The tech was sympathetic, but said that as both of my pistols were relatively new, and that as such all existing previous magazine issues had been addressed by Smith and corrected. However, he said that he would send me two new magazine releases to swap out on my pistols.

Once I receive them, I intend to take the pistols to a gun smith and have him examine the current releases and then install the new ones. I will see how this works out. However, I am of the opinion that the fault here rests with a weak spring in the magazine release assembly. I hope they send new springs also. And I hope this resolves the problem.

I have the opposite problem...my mag release is tough to hit in a hurry and I have to mean it to eject the mag. I've left it alone as for me that's a good thing.
