Default M&P 9 Full Size and M&P 9 Pro Series

Howdie, I'm a newbie on here, and need to ask a couple of questions to anyone that can help. Before I lay down some serious cash.

My questions are:
1. Is the lower (frame) on the full size M&P 9 the same as the lower on the M&P 9 Pro.

2. If the lower frame is the same, can I buy the upper (slide and barrel), and put it on the M&P 9 full size lower frame? Then, will I end up with an exact M&P 9 Pro Series?

Why? Well, in my state, Mass, I can only buy the M&P 9 full size (Mass Approved Gun), where as the M&P 9 Pro is not. However, I can buy the M&P 9 Pro slide and barrel alone, though. I want to end up with M&P9 Pro so I can use it in IDPA.

Pardon my ignorance, I'm newbie with S&W M&Ps, but I want to get the best one possible. I sure would appreciate any one that knows the specifics on my intended conversion. Thanks, Jack

Pretty sure it would function, but the trigger pull is different on the PRO. I have the same problem getting it in California.

Good luck.

I feel so much safer not having the PRO available...

Can you buy a M&P 9L? The M&P 9 Pro has a Hiviz front sight, little lighter trigger and shorter reset. The 9L does not.

But the trigger on the 9L is not bad at all. You can replace the front sight with a Hiviz if need be.

Or buy the 9L and a 9 Pro slide.

I would contact S&W.

Thanks guys for the above input. Unfortunately, here in Massachusetts, I can only buy an M&P 9 Full Size (4 1/4" Barrel). I've been told that M&P 9 Full Size (4 1/4) lower frame is the same as the M&P 9 Pro. I tried to call S&W, but they are shut down for the next 2 weeks for the holiday.

If anyone can confirm that the lowers are the same, I'd appreciate it.

Jack

I have both a 9L and the standard 9. But 9L in on loan. Saw a 9 Pro at my friends gunshop yesterday (yes they were open). If I have time today I will stop by there and see if I can swap the slides.

Just a note: M&P's shipped to MA have to have the 10# trigger. They don't need to stay that way ;-)

It would be nice if S&W would offer the 9Pro/9L upper as a seperate assy. A blank slide and barrel would run $300, then you would need sights and either transfer the striker/extractor and other small parts or add another $100 for all that stuff. A quick trigger job and you would be set up. Maybe someone in marketing will come up with a package at a resonable price. At one time Glock offered complete 24 uppers for $275 which was good deal if you already had a 22/35.

Just got back from the gunshop. Put the M&P 9 Pro slide on a standard M&P 9 and it fit just fine.

Thanks Kanewpadle and above for you valuable info. Now knowing that it will cycle, I'm going ahead full bore with my ambition of getting a full blown M&P9 Pro.

According to my research and the above experienced comments, the lower is exactly the same with one exception. The sear in the 9 is a higher quality smoother one. Don't know if I really need that special sear, cuz I just picked up a full size M&P 9, and it has a Burwell Standard Trigger Job, and it is nice,!!!. Man, he does good work. Now that I know that a 9 Pro will cycle fine, I am on the search for a M&P 9 Pro upper. Don't know if Smith and Wesson in Springfield will just sell me an upper. So if anyone knows where I might be able to buy just an upper, please post any possibilities.

Thanks Jack
I'm in Mass, a non free state...what a bummer that I have to jump thru all these hoops to get a decent IDPA competition gun.

Congrats!
Keep us posted on whether they sell you a slide.

The ONE good thing about being a shooter in MA is that you can drive to S&W within 2-3 hours of anywhere in the state.

Jack-

did you get anywhere in your quest for a M&P pro upper? I think you are on the right track with the trigger job, vice getting a pro sear from S&W. Apex Tactical also offers a sear kit for the M&P that is smoother and lighter than the pro so I have heard. Give us an update.
