Default Casings from M&P 9 flying in my face!!

I've had alot of trouble with casings flying back at my face when I shoot my M&P 9. Thank goodness I wear safety glasses. One time when I was shooting, a casing came up and landed on top of my safety glasses and burned my eyebrow!! I sent it back to S&W once, and they said they fixed the problem, ejector maybe? However, it still does it. I thought maybe I was just limp wristing it, but when my husband shot it, he too had the same problem. It doesn't happen with every shot, but alot of them. Did I get a "bad" gun? Has anyone else had any similar problems?

Both my Sigma and my M&P doses that to me every now and again. Are you and your husband left handed?

No, we are both right handed. It's dissapointing because I love that gun. It's one of the first guns I purchased. Now I'm kinda hesitant to shoot it.

Default facing casings

I have not heard this particular complaint brought up but maybe once on the boards where M&Ps are discussed. I suspect that S&W will replace the ejector and maybe extractor and/or spring pretty quickly to fix this, bet it is an extractor tension issue.

Move your head left or right far enough so you dont get hit in the face. And wear a cap so if it does hit you in your face that long bill might make that empty casing bounce off of bill on cap and fall to ground. Just my opinion. Or 2 cents worth or 3. rz625-8

My MP9c did the same thing at first. After a couple 100 rounds or so it seemed to have corrected itself. Maybe some just need a break in period.

Mine doesn't hit me in the face, but almost every piece of brass flies right over the barrier on my right and into the next lane at the range. I usually try to not start firing it if someone is mid-magazine in the lane next to me. Then again, they could use it as training for distractions!

My first thought with the 9mm was limp wristing. But you have addressed that.

Have you tried a different brand, or type of ammunition?

I experienced the same problem with one of my nines when reloading ammunition for it. When I loaded a little hotter, the casings cleared my head with no problem.

Quite awhile back my wife had been shooting my G22 in .40 cal with no problems, and decided to buy a G17 in 9mm, and experienced the same problem of casings hitting her in the face.

She solved the problem by taking my .40 cal. :-()

I've seen this problem fixed on a G19 by "tuning" (read slightly tweeking) the ejector to send the spent cases off to the side verses straight up and out. Not reccommending it, but just saying...

Does it do it with all brands /power ammo?
Sounds like an ejector is out of tune.

FWIW: I have 3 m&P's and all of them throw their brass into nice neat piles about 3-4- right and a foot back. Perfect really.

I have owned an M&P40 for about the past year and shoot it often. I do not have the problem you described, but I do notice that it definitely throws the first piece of brass from each magazine in a different place than the rest of the spent rounds. I thought that to be odd. Especially considering it happens whether the mag is loaded with 5 or 15 rounds. Thankfully, they all clear my head, so it is not a distraction. In your case, I would have it fixed however possible. You can't shoot at your best when you are dodging hot brass all the time.

I usually use WWB 115 gr fmj and Remington UMC, but I suppose I could try some other brands. Any suggestions?

I only asked to see if the issue was single brand ammo dependent. If you've tried both WWB and UMC, it's not. also assuming you've shot it (and others have shot it) with different grips and on/off a rest, it's sounding like somethings out of whack on the gun. I'd call S&W. They will likely have you ship it back for a "tuning". It shouldn't do that.

+1 --- I've had this happen with some light reloads too.

Maybe a change in ammo will help the OP

My sister has an M&P9c that does the exact same thing. It varies depending on the ammunition used. Independence brand sends every case back at you, but WWB seems to throw out to the right and slightly back, just like you would expect. My thought (and it would seem to be supported by other replies here) is that lighter loads don't produce enough pressure to cycle the mechanism fully, and therefore don't eject the spent case properly.

I have an M&P40c and have no such issues with it. It eats whatever I feed it with no problems whatsoever.

Lots of semis do this. They send casings all over the place. It has nothing to do with a particular model or brand.

Same issue here with my PD's issued MP 9mm's. Sent them in on S&Ws dime, and have been perfect ever since. I believe they replaced the extractors, and they were the earlier released M&Ps.

I don't think you would like it if you got burned. People have problems and ask for help. This forum is ment to help folks, not to be laughed at and make fun of!!!

I had a similiar problem with my colt defender 45. it would eject the casing hard to the right around a 4 oclock. they would eject so hard and would, if hit right, stick into the next lanes walls. every so often one would come back and hit my forehead. couple times they would cut me. wierd thing was it worked itself out, after firing a couple hundred rounds thru it. thought i would pass that along.

Default Sending it back

Well, after much thought and testing, Ive decided to send my M&P back to S&W for a second time. The first time they replaced the ejector and did a barrel modification. I took it out today and ran about 50 rounds through it and now alot of the casings fly off to the LEFT of me landing on my shoulder, then off to the right, and still at my face. VERY FRUSTRATING, so we will see if they fix it this time!!

UPDATE: M&P9: Got it back from S&W. This is the 2nd return. I sent just the gun in, no magazines, and it got sent back with a 15 round magazine in it, which I thought was nice. so anyways, this time around they replaced the extractor spring, replaced extractor, barrel modification, and replaced ejector. Casings still fly at my face, but I noticed when I used the magazine they sent me, the casings went where they were suppose to most of the time, but when I used a magazine that was original to the gun, it was worse. So maybe my mags. are bad? Called S&W to see if they could send me some new mags., they said yes if I wanted to send in my old ones. I've pretty much given up though. I'm tired of fighting with the dand thing. I'm getting rid of it and getting a Glock 17 9mm. I heard they are quite reliable and that's what I need. Thanks anyways S&W, but no thanks.

Weird, just weird. Get something that works for you but I don't understand how mags can affect ejection. Were you ever able to tie it to any particular brand or weight of bullet? I worked on a 5906 that would work with two brands but would not extract one brand reliably at all. I know it is not the same gun or problem but it did teach me about ammo differences and tolerance combination or stacking.

You might consider renting a Glock 17 at local range first. Your complaints about the M&P are not unheard of about Glocks. Although I think the 17 would be a good choice in general.

FWIW, my wife's Steyr S40 ejected brass towards at her face burning her also. We sent it in. When it got back it still ejected brass at her, however, it now did about 30 feet above her head and at least comes down cool. Amazingly, she still loves that pistol.

Talking

I tried out a .40 M&P at a factory rep open house last year. It was consistently accurate - every round on paper and every spent casing right between my eyes, including the one that slid past the glasses and blistered my nose.

For all those who think this is normal and all semi-autos do it,

a) this is the only pistol I'd experienced this with repeatedly in 30+ years of shooting the type (Luger, Colt, Ruger, SIG, EAA and 1st and 3rd generation S&W)

b) you should really try shooting something that doesn't fight back - it might improve your accuracy

c) Sometimes this happens with any auto if you hold your head wrong, but you shouldn't have to hold your head wrong to dodge empties. They can be made to fling the brass somewhere else.

d) You never see this behavior in a revolver

Really liked the ergonomics and function of the M&P otherwise

Not common, but not entirely unheard of either.

Coincidentally, here is a thread currently on the first page of Glocktalk posted yesterday:

I had the same issue with a Taurus PT809. Gun shot excellently, but consistently sent spent casings back at my face and head. My M&P 9mm, Taurus PT92, and Glock 19 don't have the issue. Taurus finally replaced it, and the second gun did the same thing, just not as badly (went from around 98% of the time to around 30% of the time). Tried multiple types of ammo and had almost 1000 rounds through it. After one landed in the space between my glasses and forehead (even with a cap on, so it came straight back), I got rid of it. See if someone else has an M&P 9mm like yours and try theirs. If the same thing happens with theirs, then it might be you. If it doesn't happen, then it's probably the gun.

I'm sure it wouldn't bother you at all if every case flew at your face. The fact that the shooter is female not in any way relavant to the issue at hand.
We can tell her to go get eye protection first if she ever needs to use that gun for personal defense.

if u r right handed it shouldnt be a problem. the ejector might just be catching the same part of the casing when it throws it out of the gun. i wouldnt call it a problem, just a misfortune

Local PD sent back (3) early model M&P9s for the brass ejecting straight up. In this case it was extractor replacement for all three.

I have had the brass shower problem with different guns, but always with 147 gr subsonic loads. I've never shot anything heavier than 124 in my 9c, and I've never had the problem.

Skeptic i have shot 147 grain in my FS but I really like the 115 grain loads, cheap, accurate and will get the job done.

I have this same problem. But I only have 75 rounds through my gun. I read that I need to but 200-300 through it before it is a problem, and that after that I need to call S&W and figure it out. Cases going straight up and back down, or straight up and back into my field of vision. Doesn't make target acquisition very easy when dodging casings.

New M&P ejection question

another thread on this subject that I posted the following:

"Shot the Winchester 115 gr FMJ with perfect ejection. All the cases landed about three feet to my right at 4 o'clock in a nice 24" diameter cluster.
The Federal 115 gr FMJ RN still ejected fine, but again about 30% of the cases came back on our heads, and the rest landed 2-3 feet to my right in a 36" diameter cluster. Much more erratic than the Winchester ammo.
Guess my pistol does not like the Federal 115 gr FMJ RN. Luckily I only have 250 rounds left."

Did I get a "bad" gun? Has anyone else had any similar problems?

dont worry about it...that's why you wear protective glasses when shooting at the range.
And also remember to keep your mouth closed.

That's to the point where you have to factor recoil from the ejected brass into your shooting hold!

I'm not color blind but the hot pink or what ever it is on a gray background is incredibly hard for me to read without blowing it up larger than what fits on a page.

When this happens on a 1911, it usually means that the recoil spring is too weak. You might contact Wolff and order a stiffer recoil spring.
My Commander used to throw some empties in my face. I would not carry a gun for self defense if it had this habit.

Nothing to be laughing at. I wouldn't want hot brass routinely hitting me in the face. I once had the opportunity to buy a Clarke accurized .45 1911a1 at a very reasonable price but it had a bad habit of planting every empty right in the top of my head. With that going on I could have shot better groups with a Clerke .32 S&W. I passed!

My M&P9C sends them toward my head. Not very many hit me, but one does occasionally. I'm left-handed and attributed it to that. My TCP does the same thing.

It's a joke. He's not actually talking about the brass.
