Default What lube do you use and how often?

I was shooting my M&P40c today, and now we're up to about 4-500 rounds (I don't keep count so that's just a guess). Toward the end of my time it felt a little funny...I'd pull the trigger and it would fire, it would eject the empty, then as the slide was going forward it almost felt like it was dragging or catching on something. I checked it all over and everything looked good, and it never failed to chamber, fire or eject.

I broke it down to clean it tonight for the first time since day one (yes, I'm a "clean as necessary" type ) and everything was bone dry. When I got it I lubed it up good with some Militec-1, so I'm guessing it was just time for an oil change and lube job.

On my metal framed guns I always used Slide-Glide and it worked great, but I never used it on my polymer framed guns...I always gave them the Glock "5 drops of oil" treatment.

I'm going shooting again next weekend so I'm anxious to see how it feels versus today. Still, I love this little gun! Even dry it shot good and always worked

I clean and lube my weapons after every trip to the range or after firing. I also check it every 2 months, to make sure it's not dry. I use Breakfree CLP to clean and lube, and Mil-Tec as well for just lube.

Never add lube to a dirty pistol.
Clean and then lightly lube. Combat tupperware like to run almost dry. I use Brownells action lube on the slide so it stays put forever just sitting.

I'm a grease guy mostly because of the desert heat of the SW. I prefer any product that contains Dupont's Teflon as their main ingredient...
Works for my handguns as well on my lone M-1 carbine....

I'm assuming you mean handguns and not referring to the bedroom.

Mobil 1 10w50 inside. Never a lube breakdown problem. Stays slick even when dirty or hot. Tends to stay cleaner in general. Heat does not affect it at all. Vaseline wiped down to non slick on the outside. Never a rust issue. One seven dollar quart lasts for years. This has worked for years for me on autos, wheel guns, AKs, ARs woods guns and by the way is fine in the truck crank case.

I've been using Mobil 1 forever. I use it after cleaning only.

A quart bottle is a great value compared to gun oils and will last several lifetimes.

I clean my guns after after range visit also and I use slide glide grease on the slide rails based on studies by Gray Guns and he has the results up on the Sig forum. I've used breakfree in the past and it's also a very good product.

I use Mobil 1 10w30. Why that weight? Because it's what I had in the garage at the time.

I just recently started using it. I lightly lubed my ancient Gen 1 G17 before a class with Mike Rayburn at the S&W Academy a few weeks ago. In 2 days, I went through 600+ rounds, and none of the lube burnt off at all.

It worked so well for the Glock that I decided to try it in a SMG. I went to the range with a few friends and lubed my Reising before I left home with the Mobil 1. I was shooting cast bullet reloads, and it definately started to warm up a little a few times, to the point where Remoil starts to burn off. All the Mobil 1 stayed there and did its job.

My M&P 9mm works well with it, too. Not a malfunction yet.

Here are a couple of products available from Brownells that I really like and seem work much better than the traditional stand-bys:

Action Lube Plus:
Not a petroleum-based grease, but a synthetic-based, semi-solid lubricant developed and used by military special forces to protect expensive, hi-tech firearms and equipment in all temperatures and all environments; from the deserts of Kuwait to the Bering Strait. Actually exceeds the mil spec of standard, molybdenum disulfide grease. Action Lube Plus lubricates and inhibits corrosion and galling from salt water, powder residue, sweat and moisture on all types of metal, including stainless steel, titanium and aluminum. Action Lube Plus is very concentrated; only a small amount applied to the face of sears and triggers will dramatically decrease pull weight as well as smooth actual trigger feel. On high friction points like bolt raceways and lever mechanisms, just a dab of Action Lube Plus completely eliminates wear and helps assure reliable functioning. A very light coating on the outside of your guns will keep fingerprints neutralized and protect expensive bluing from rust and moisture damage that can occur during storage.

Friction Defense Xtreme Gun Oil:
Delivers twice the lubricity of the industry standard-setting, original Friction Defense formula, with even better corrosion protection and tolerance for extreme operating temperatures. Stays slick at temperatures as low as -100° F (-74° C) and up to +550° F (+288° C) for superb versatility in a wide variety of sporting and duty firearms: full-auto, semi-auto, single-shot, pistols, rifles, and shotguns. It contains a careful blend of the most advanced synthetic oils, with water-displacing additives to combat rust caused by moisture and the contaminants in fingerprints. Enhanced lateral and horizontal “creep” ensures the oil penetrates into the tiniest nooks and crannies. Micro-fine particle PTFE (the same material used on non-stick cookware) won’t settle in the bottle and provides outstanding lubrication on the hottest-running guns. Unique heat transfer properties actually pull heat away from friction points, while extreme pressure additives keep Friction Defense Xtreme working, even in the hardest cycling semi-autos and full-auto military weapons. We call it “slicky”—slick lubrication, plus a sticky quality that keeps Friction Defense Xtreme on metal parts through high-volume shooting sessions. This protection also inhibits the formation of carbon and other fouling byproducts, so guns clean up more quickly and easily than with ordinary petroleum-based oils. Available in convenient flip-open, dropper-top bottle for precise application of just the right amount of Friction Defense Xtreme.

This is incorrect. A dirty (lubed) gun will run. A clean gun (not lubed) will not.

It is a common misconception that you do not need to lube polymer guns (Glocks, XD's and M&P's).

We see tons of polymer guns fail in training classes because the owner neglected to lubricate the weapon properly (especially when it is raining).

Clean after every session whether one round or a thousand fired and use Weapons Shield for lube and M Pro 7 cleaner.

What are you saying is incorrect???????????
Try reading the post again. The point is clean first, then lube. This is straight out of the pistol manuals.
Nobody has posted anything about NOT lubing.

I do pistol classes also, and the most common stoppage is failure to clean the guns. (Why should I clean it? It's brand new!)

I don't completely agree with you on this. Sure, you should clean your pistol, then lube. But, if you are shooting, and your pistol, or any other firearm begins to get dirty, malfunction, become sluggish, lube burns off, etc, and you do not have time to clean it, lube it again.

I know we are talking about pistols in this thread, but I'll associate this to MG's. At a shoot or training class, you don't have time to keep breaking down your MG's to clean them every time your lube burns off. A shot of lube, even on a dirty MG, will keep it running without issues.

At MG shoots, you'll see people constantly spraying actions with Remoil, or whatever their chosen lube is, as soon as they cool down. Do they clean them? Rarely during the day, and most of the time, not throughout the weekend, either. They'll wait until they get home.

An ideal situation would be to clean your firearm before adding lube. But, it's not always convenient or practical to do so. If that's the situation, lube it to keep it running without any damage. Dirty lube is better than no lube.

I agree with you on M60's and a M2, even on a metal framed pistol. Heck, I've washed a pistol out in a bucket of water in an emergency.
However, the statement stands for combat tupperware; throwing in more lube in a fouled pistol seldom works. It is the largest headache I have with the students who don't understand how to clean and properly lube a handgun.
Too much lube/fouling in that plastic linkage and it is done until you wash it out.
I've seen Glock owners who still have the original "golden lube" in the pistol after 6 months, wondering why their pistol "broke."

Speaking of Rem Oil this is what I have. Is it a good choice to lube my SW9VE and M&P or is it to thin?

IMHO, it is too thin for the slide at normal temp.
One spot of slide lube on each of the frame points (you want something that will stay put) and a drop of breakfree on the contact point of the metal sear. Don't put lube in the striker channel.
If you are very careful, a tiny drop of remoil might be OK on linkage pivot points, but too much and it will quickly collect crud. I use CRC dry silicone to clean the plastic linkages, and it leaves a hint of dry lube behind. My student shoot up to 500 rounds over 3 days with my rental Sigmas without problems.

I agree with that. I was looking at it from not just the tupperware standpoint, but in terms of 1911's, Sigs, etc. They definately need more attention.

Speaking of the factory Glock "golden lube", I've had LEO trade-ins come through my friend's shop, 10 years old, completely bone dry, very fouled, still with the golden lube on in it. You can definately tell that officer only fired his 100 rounds/year, and probably never disassembled his duty weapon at all.

Breakfree CLP for lube and Shooters Choice for cleaning. I use them on both handguns and long guns and my guns perform as they should in a wide variety of weather conditions including below freezing temps with precipitation and desert sand storms and extreme heat. I am pretty stingy with the amount of CLP I use.

I use 99% of the time Breakfree CLP. Otherwise grease if required to do so on guns like Garands etc.

From AR15s to pistols, keep them wet and they will run forever. The CLP will flush the crud out. Clean them up when you put them away. Dry guns don't run, clean or dirty.

For a long term lube, probably. But at the MG shoots, to keep the 1919's and M16's running, we just blast them out with brake cleaner then hose them down dripping wet with Remoil. It works well for that. It does seem to dry up like you mentioned after a while, but for just keeping them going on the range, it works well.

My current bottle is Outers.

Recently, I've had 2 people recommend Mobil1 5W-30. I might give it a try.

I clean and lube my gun every range trip or every other week. I don't use to much lube because the gun don't need it. A dry gun is one of my worst fears of gun ownership due to the fact that a dry gun is a dead owner if I have to use it for SD.

I shoot USPSA in several divisions. I clean after every match with Breakfree, blow it dry w/ compressed air and give everything a good shot of Smith & Wesson Dry Lube. I get zero residue because there's nothing for the crud to stick to. There's only a light soot that comes off easily. No "wet" lube for me.
