M&P 45 Thumb Safety
Hey Y'all, new to this forum. I don't own a Smith & Wesson but have been thinking about an M&P 45. Saw and held one yesterday and really liked it and almost put the credit card down, but really wanted one with the thumb safety, the model the store had did not have the thumb safety. I understand that if you get a model with the thumb safety and decide you you don't like the safety you can remove it. Wondering if you get the model without the thumb safety if you can add one and if so where would you get it and how much do they cost?
Thanks
Lennie
PS I posted this someplace else on the forum (no idea where) and then realized that I was probably in the wrong place. Sorry about that.

I have one on my M&P-45 and I don't like it. It's the most worthless external safety ever put on a pistol. It does not stay in place like a 1911 safety does. A flea fart can knock it on or off.

Welcome Lenny.
I researched this for a friend recently. Everything I've read says "no". ( Lots of discussion at the mp-pistol forum) If you don't mind me asking, why not just order a new one the way you want? SKU 109107.
FWIW, I know it's a personal thing but I actually like and feel VERY safe with the lack of a thumb safety on my M&P 45. Just like a revolver. The internal striker block safety works very well as long as you don't modify your trigger pull down to unreasonable levels.

Thanks Dave.
I did exactly what you suggested, except I went with a M&PC 9mm with the thumb safety. This is going to be my carry gun (the Compact 45 was just too big).
For forty years I have gripped my 1911 with my thumb over the safety. I am convinced that at my age learning new motor memory is almost impossible. So the safety is more a grip issue than a safety issue, although a little extra safety can't hurt. Also, I feel the harder the gun is to put into action for the uninitiated the better.
The M&PC will be here Friday....silly, but like a kid waiting on Christmas!

I am interested in the same gun. Saw it today at my local shop. They want $580, plus tax. How does that compare to what you paid, if you don't mind my asking.
Thanks.

I too grew up with 1911's and Hi-Powers [my first pistol], and swiping off a thumb safety is second nature. I had to order a M&P c 45 with the safety, because my dealer didn't have one in stock. I took it to the range for the first time today and fired 200 rounds of ball and defense rounds w/o one hiccup. No problem with the safety. The pistol was smooth, comfortable, and very, very accurate from the first round.
