M&P model 990L Question
I just brought home a M&P 990L 9mm smith to see if i like it for ccw from a dealer friend.Does anyone out there have this weapon or is anyone familiar with them as far as being a good choice for ccw? It feels good in my small hand and trigger is smooth but have not fired it yet, still deciding

Two different models here...what you have is an SW990L which is based on the Walther P99. Different gun than an M&P. Both are great guns...I have one of each and the Walther is slightly more compact but doesn't hold as many rounds as the M&P. I can conceal my P99 easily and I'm pretty thin, so I'd say if it fits your hand well and you're comfortable with it the gun will work for a CCW. It's not going to be a deep concealment weapon due to its size, but it is definitely concealable.

Hey Matt,
So this 990L is not in the M&P family correct?
The markings on the gun say frame was made in west germany
and slide and other parts made in usa in mass. Also there is a walther patent on gun. It's real nice for carry as opposed to my glock 19.

I have a 990L, 9mm compact and a .40 S&W Full Size. Although I prefer the 9mm compact overall, I would feel confident carrying the .40 full size as a duty or winter carry. I had an M&P 9mm full size and a Glock 30. I may be in the minority, but I prefer the S&W(Walther) 99 series to both the M&P series and Glocks. ALL are solid, reliable weapons and I would carry any one of them without complaint, but have the luxury of picking and choosing favorites. The 990L would serve you well.

no 990L is not in the M&P family. It is the SW99 in DAO variant. The frame actually is made by Walther in Germany and the slide is made by Smith and Wesson. This is not due to a patent issue but rather a deal that was struck between Walther and S&W. S&W is now the sole importer of Walther firearms in the USA. In fact many parts of Walther firearms in the US are actually made by S&W and installed at the S&W factory. S&W even does warranty services for Walther firearms at their own factory.

Thanks, after some reading I found out that it was not in the M&P family. Not much in reviews to be found on this gun.I was hoping between S&W and walther it would be a good pick.Any others feel this would be a reliable ccw?

I just bought my second SW99. Never had any reliability issues with the first.
For CCW, it's slimmer than most full size high cap 9mm's, so if you are going to carry a full size, it's a good choice.

There's nothing wrong with the 990L, it's a good modern carry gun. While it is not part of the M&P family, Smith clearly borrowed some design aspects from the SW99 for the M&P. Carry it with confidence.

I have the older S&W99 and a Walther P99QA. Both have been totally reliable with a wide variety of bullet shapes and weights. The S&W 99 has a great trigger and they are surprisingly accurate for a short barreled semi auto. My S&W 99 is more accurate than my M&P9PRO. I also appreciate their unique ambidextrous mag release.

I use my Walther P99 AS .40 from time to time as a CCW and it works quite well. Its grip is shorter than on my M&P40 fullsize which makes it slightly easier to conceal. Interestingly I find that I'm able to use the same Galco holster for both guns.
