Default .40 ammo question

I picked up some WWB 165 gr fmj and some Fed 180 gr fmj for my M&P. What are you guys finding that works better, the 180 gr or 165 gr stuff? .40 is new to me so I have no experience with the popular weights for caliber.

Thanks

180gr is supposed to POI for sights. For reloading I like 180gr. I have shot just about everything and never had any problems but regularly chose the 180 for practice because of the POI

in factory loads I shoot the 165 when I can find it, doesn't seem to beat the gun up quite so much.

Reloading, it's a toss up since I seldom load hot.

I shoot and load everything 140-180gr. You need to watch the 165gr weight factory loads, you have Federal that run 965fps compared to Remington that are running 1140fps. I like the Remington load but it will print lower than the other 165-180 loads.

I am just wondering when you say Remington prints lower, at what distance are your targets?

The sights are normaly set for 25yds with 180gr bullet weights. I'm guessing that is why Federal is running their 165gr @ 965 so it'll print fairly close to where the 180s' are. I've never measured the distance between the Remington 165s' and factory 180s'. I'll have to break down and buy a box of 180s' and do a side-by-side to see how much there is.

Actually the Fed are 180, the Win 165. I will do a comparo in the next week or so and report back. I don't expect too much difference though.

The Winchester performance 165 is also 1140fps, USA 165 is 1030fps. Federal 180 runs 1000fps and they now list the American Eagle 165 at 1140, but the HydraShok 165 is 980fps. Just a general rule of thumb is the higher the velocity the lower the round will print.

Default 40sw ammo question.

in the 40sw line up you can go from 135 to 180gr, having the last the most recoil but it is the cheapest for range time I own two 40cal pistols the 4inch walther p99 original imported by interarms back in 1998 and recently bought an mp40c for my ccw, my walther likes and groups very thight with 165s at 25yds but i run 135 low recoil from federal on my 40c batch #xm40ha if you can get some this was a run for federal branches it is a lot easy to double tap with and run at full power on short barrels.

I stick to 180gr in my M&P40c simply because it's the first I shot and went where I wanted. (And I subscribe to "Bigger is Better")
