Yes. I just performed this on my .40 full size. Used 1/2 of a 1911 magazine release spring to do it. Functioned 100% at the range.

Fate, my new M&P 9mm just arrived and I want to deactivate the magazine safety. I have re read your directions and will do this ASAP. Just one question. Have you had any problems with your now that you have had it done for a while? I appreciate your doing, testing and posting the info.....

Other than a slightly different shaped Part "A" the instructions convert the pistol to just what my pistol looks like and it came from the factory withOUT the magazine disconnect, little spring and all.

Burwell's before and after photos.

I did mine three years ago and haven't had any trouble. IMO you are more likely to have trouble WITH the mag safety than without.

Nope, no troubles at all.

On performing the install, at first I had my spring too long and it was very hard to put everything back in. Trimmed the spring back a bit more and used a tiny flat punch as a slave rod on the side opposite the one I was sliding the pin back in. It held everything in alignment and was much simpler. A pair of straight hemostats and a vise also made the job simpler.

Speed Shooter Specialties sells a spring made for this purpose. I just used a cut down 1911 mag catch spring though.

I removed mine from my M&P 45 and I bought a variety pack of different springs from Home Depot. There's 4 of each spring and there's one that works perfect, I just cut it down a little with a pair of side cutters. The pack is only $4.79 and remember the only purpose of the spring is to hold the take down lever against the side of the sear block so it moves up and down staying under the sear.

If you want I can mail you the perfect size spring and you'll just have to cut it but you can get 3 good springs out of it. If you need the spring send me your mailing info via PM, no charge of course.

You guys are too good. Thanks for the offer of the spring, but before you offered to send me one I had ordered the ones from speed shooters. Maybe someone else can take you up on the offer. Very nice of you....Thanks again for all the help. I love the M&P's and now I have three and my wife has one. Great guns....

To anyone, has there been any documented failures with the magazine safety on the M&P?

How about the 3rd gen Smiths?

Did all three of my M&P's today in less than 1/2 hour. Will range shoot tomorrow. Thanks again to all that replied. I got a screaming deal on the ones with the mag safety and felt confident that they could be de activated. I just had no idea as to how easy........

Shot three M&P's today that I did the magazine safety disconnect to. All functioned flawlessly. Total of 300 rounds shot over two days in the 3. Thanks again to all that responded and took the time to offer info. This is a great forum......

The mag safety isn't about the magazine falling out. It's a disconnect that prevents the gun from firing without a magazine in place.

When I bought the guns I really did not have an issue with the magazine safety. And I could have lived with it. In fact, for my wife who has a slight issue with racking the slides this is perfect since the gun can be stashed with one in the chamber and magazine out and be pretty safe. Insert mag and go. However, in the event of accidently dropping the magazine during a confrontation or scuffle the gun becomes a club. I asked about reversing the process out of curiosity and never dreamed it would be so easy. I shoot IDPA with the 9mm and to show clear at the end of a string I need to insert an empty mag, show clear, close the action and drop the hammer. Not huge but a bit of a nuisance.

I knew that. I thought the reason people don't like it was they were afraid the mag would pop loose.

I like it. My Glock doesn't have it. Either way doesn't bother me.

I am wanting to do this to my gun. I watch a video on youtub and the gun used a spring for a pin off his desk. Do you think that would do ok or do I need to buy a spring?
thanks
