Difference of .45 M&P compared to .40 M&P???
Looking to maybe pick up a .45M&P I have a .40 M&P compact. Is there a substantial difference in the .40 compared to the .45ACP? If so please explain........
Thanks

I cant say that I have shot an M&P 40 but from reading many posts on here Ive seen numerous times that, "it has a lot of snap"... From my experience w/ the .45 M&P that I do own, it has more push. I own the 9 full size and 45 full size and honestly the 45 doesnt have much more recoil. I shoot my 45 better then any gun I own... I think youll be bery happy w/ the 45, no doubt about it.......

AGREED
I have the FS M&P 9MM as well as the COMPACT M&P 45.
LOVE the 9MM, and LOVE the 45C.
I agree...
9 is a snap but easy to control.
45 is a push with a little snap.
If you didn’t tell me, I would not have told the difference.
GET THE 45.......
as my buddy says, "its Gods chosen caliber".

Craig - No disrespect to BrianE or silvercn, but please tell me that you're not going to take the advice/opinion from someone who has not even shot a .40 and is going on the second hand opinion of others about the amount of (.40) snap. If there's anyone who should know how much a 40c snaps, it's you.
As I've stated in other threads, as much as other shooters/people talk about the feel/shootability/aesthetics of a handgun/pistol, etc. it's all about engineering design and physics, which in most cases is quantifiable; and the physical attributes/shooting ability of the shooter, which is very unique. If you're truly interested in the difference between a M&P .45 vs .40:
1) determine your "philosophy of use" (POU)
2) compare the specs
3) go the range and rent one before you buy
If you're just looking for someone to commiserate with in order to affirm your decision to buy a .45, well, go ahead and buy one, they're great pistols! You'll love it. They "push" rather than snap, blah, blah...there, "feel" better about your decision to get a .45 yet?

I have a .45 and recently picked up a .40 (both are fullsize). To me, the .45 is a kitten compared to the .40
If you like the .40, you will have no problem with the .45

45 compact has a barrel only about 1/4" shorter than full size, but with a shorter grip. Not as small as a 40 or 9 compact, but the 45c is a great gun.

M&P45 and M&P45C are the best M&Ps, IMHO.

As a genuine wisenheimmer I would say the difference is 0.05 inches.
Seriously, Ibelieve the M&P 40 is built on the same frame as the M&P9 while the frame of the M&P45 is somewhat larger for the 45 ACP round - I shoot an M&P9Pro and M&P45.

I'm really not familiar with the new M&P line, but I've shot a lot of 9s, 40s and 45s. My choice is the 40 because I can come closest to magnum performance with it. I made the switch from .357 mag to the 40, so it just didn't bother me, but it does have a tendency to sort of "whip" my wrist if I'm not careful. The .45 doesn't. I think what load you use in .40 will make a big difference, where it might not in the .45. The best advice given so far was to rent some of the different guns and try different loads and decide what feels best.

I have a 40c and it is snappy compared to my other 40's. That being said my wife has no problem shooting it and she is all of 5'2" and 110lbs. So if she can handle any grown man should be able to.

My only M&P (so far) is the 45c and it's a real nice shooter. Especially for a compact. The only gun I have that I shoot better is my 908 and I chalk that up to range time. I have 5000 rounds through that and only 500 through my 45c. You know you're shooting a .45, don't get me wrong, but it's got that "push" as opposed to the "snap".

M&P 40 FS has a snap of a recoil. M&P 45 FS has a gentle THUD!

I'm going to take a flier on this with the full knowledge some will disagree, but my experience so far is those people who have trouble with the 40 simply need to reconsider the basics, such as grip and handling, and put in more quality range time with specific training goals in mind. Back in the day when we all carried 38s or 357s, those who didn't like the 357 usually had some basic problems with their grip. hand strength, wrist strength. Once those problems were cured, they might not have liked shooting the magnums, because you will feel it, but they could handle it creditably.

I have owned or shot extensively all models of M&P pistols except 357 Sig and 40 Pro.
The full size M&P guns fit the hands very well. The 9MM is a blast to shoot because recoil is almost non existant. The full size 40 is the softest shooting 40 I ever shot. Many others I know agree.
The compact 9 is a pleasure. The compact 40 is snappy but very manageable.
The M&P 45's are a little different. A little bigger in the hands and the triggers on every single 45 that I have shot or dry fired had a terrible trigger IMO. Had an M&P 45 compact that had a measured 9 pound trigger pull. After dry firing it 500 times, it did not change. For a full size polymer 45 I prefer the XD/XDM 45.
The entire line of M&P pistols are extremely reliable and accurate. I have never had one fail for any reason.
Currently I own a full size 9MM and a compact 40. I plan on buying additional barrels from Storm Lake so I can shoot 357 Sig and 9MM in my compact. Beats buying more guns.
The sear and srtiker block can be replaced with Apex parts which will make an unbelieveable difference.
I replaced the sear and striker block on my 40C. The trigger pull is 3 pounds even. There is no take up. No stacking. No grittyness. No nothing. The reset is much quicker but not as noticeable as a Glock. Accuracy was greatly improved also. It was well worth the money.
IMHO, I have the ultimate carry gun. Once I get the additional barrels it will be very versatile. I carry a full size backup magazine with an X-Grip adapter.
Whichever gun you choose, you will be well served.
To add: I am extremely fortunate to have a friend that owns an indoor range/gunshop. I get to shoot anything I want, anytime I want as long as it's in the rental case.
Needless to say, I've shot a lot of guns.

The only other guns I have to compare the "snappiness" of my M&P.40 are a S&W J-frame .38spl and a Kel-Tec p-11 9mm. In comparison the .40 is pretty mild.

You should have shot the Kel Tec P40 when it was available!
I had one for a very short time.
The Kahr P40 ain't no fun either. But the M&P guns are a piece of cake.

Ok, actually the worst was a Glock 26 with 357 Sig barrel.

I carried an M&P40FS for around 4 years and fired approx 20,000 rounds through it. Some hot some not. I traded it off for a 45 full size a few months back and am pleased I did. I recently obtained a little brother (45C) and am quite pleased with it also. Reasoning behind the switch was reduced discomfort in Arthritic wrists.
My wrists tell me the 40 is snappier than the 45. Both 45's have proven to be more accurate than the 40 although I was quite satisfied with the 40's 1" groups.
Your mileage may vary.
