Here is a link to the official S&W Product Catalog.

http://www.smith-wesson.com/wcsstore..._Catalog_1.pdf

It looks like pages 14 and following contain "all you ever wanted to know..." about various M&P models.

Good hunting!

kbm6893:

The M&P9C and 40C seem to be available with and without a thumb safety, and with and without a magazine disconnector. The Hilary Lock seems to also be available with either of those, but also seems to preclude the thumb safety (or vice versa).

Both the magazine safety and Hilary Lock can easily be removed (or added) should you get the itch, but it's (paranoia mode on) not a good idea to remove a manufacturer's safety device. The thumb safety can also be removed easily, but while you can get a plug for the Hilary Lock, the removal of the thumb safety leaves a couple of square holes in the grip frame.

Apex's sear kits will work in all of these models, but you can't use their RAM in the Hilary Lock or thumb safety models. Apex is working on something to go with the thumb safety, but I don't think anybody who's got a Hilary Lock would care anyway.

(If you don't know about it, the "Hilary Lock" is the key lock device - part of the Clinton-era craziness at S&W.)

The Apex kits improve the trigger feel and reduce it's weight a bit. Worth it.... The RAM kit - "Reset Assist Mechanism" improves trigger reset. I think that the latter is a YMMV thing, but the former should be required ....

Regards,

Funny, but the compact comes with either the mag disconnect, or the manual safety, but not both. I was looking for something a bit lighter to replace my 6906, but I really like those features on a carry gun, and holding that 6906 and really thinking hard about it made me realize I would be nuts to go from that to a plastic gun. For the 2 oz I might save in between the two, I'm sticking with my 6906.

I have a 9c with no lock, no magazine disconnect and no manual safety. I know two people at my range with 40c's, one with manual safety and one without. The guy with the manual safety is getting ready to remove it because it just doesn't feel like it locks well into position.

Might just be his pistol, but I wouldn't like it.

Strange, given that there's absolutely no reason not to install both.... The mag disconnect rides on the front of the sear block, and the thumb safety sits behind the block - using one side as a place to hang the spring-loaded plunger that selects it's mode. (I should add "I think".... )

Adding a mag disconnect, assuming you could come up with the parts, would be pretty trivial, as is removing it . (The thumb safety requires a couple of little square cutouts in the grip, and seems to preclude the Hilary Lock. However, it looks like Brownells is selling only one sear block assembly - all the parts - and includes the Hilary Lock. I think.... Gotta look later....)

As I've mentioned, the thumb safety is not required in the gun's design. Although the trigger's fairly light at around 5-7# (without the Apex kit), a little "safety between the ears" should be sufficient, and the thumb safety seems to be too easy to operate (in either direction!). Smells like somebody demanded it, so they found a way to put one on there....

I don't think that being a plastic gun would really bother anything. They appear to be dependable, and the critical parts (slide, barrel, and some useful parts in the grip frame) are all steel.

But if you already have a 6906....

Regards,

I may have missed it in my search, if so forgive me, but how easy or hard is it to remove the M&P thumb safety?
I have the M&P 45 and really like the pistol, but see no need for, and hate the safety.
Much thanks.

sabashimon:

There's a thread here on making the thumb safety single-sided instead of ambi. (I think it's here....) Just remove the safety lever and toss it aside. That'll leave a couple of square cutouts in the plastic frame - I'm not sure what the fix is there, if any.

Alternatively, there are some videos around for installing the Apex sear into the sear block. The thumb safety is part of the sear block - pop it out and toss the thumb safety lever. Then put the block back into the grip frame....

The only real issue is having the eighth-inch roll pin punch (DO NOT use a standard punch!), and not managing to lose the ejector or pop the sear loose.

In short, nothing to it....

Regards,

You can buy a roll pin punch at Sears, I did. Took my safety off and haven't missed it. They do make little square fillers.
