Default Does it work?

At the risk of embarrasing myself, here goes: Just bought my first handguns at age 72. Normally, I am good at keeping up with technology, but I now find myself rather stumped. This particular gun is a S&W, 9mm, M&P, 17+1. I did my first Field Strip today and I now wonder if I put it back together correctly. Prior to the Field Stripping, I noticed that I could successfuly dry fire the gun three times in a row. That was not my idea to do so, but I'm learning my way around, and that's what I experienced. Now, AFTER the Field Stripping and re-assembly, it will not dry fire in the same manner. Pull the trigger and nothing happends - - it travels back, but no dry fire. Is this gun put back together improperly? I don't want to find out at the range. Thanks for any help. Gary -- Homosassa, FL.

Have you put a magazine in or manually moved the disconnect pin back in place?

Ditto. It will not fire until you move the little lever in the magazine tunnel back again (the one you had to move forward to remove the slide). If that isn't it, I'd think perhaps you have a mag disconnect and that was stuck before and you have now cleaned it and it is working.

Let us know what you find.

Insert your magazine (empty), this resets the disconnect. Rack the slide, pull the trigger. You have to rack the slide every time when you dry fire.

Default S&W M&P Pistol

I would strongly recommend you take the NRA 1st steps into to basic pistol course. It is three hours and you will learn how to operate your pistol in a safe manor and disassemble and assembly it properly. The instructor will have you shoot at least 20 rounds at the range and correct any problems you may encounter. The course will satisfy the requirements with a certificate for a Florida Concealed weapons permit when you apply. Log in to the NRA web site and click on the training and education and the link for the nearest course and instructor using your zip code.
