Default M&P 40c Feed problem

First post so be gentle. Just purchased a new 40c for my EDC. When loading and function testing my defense ammunition it has not been loading the cartidge into battery. I will start stripping it from the mag but then jams before entering the chamber. Was told that the feed ramp might need some polishing but I don't want to do that except at last resort. The ammo I use for defense is Hornady TAP's. Also have tried cheaper practice ammo and it loads without issue. any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated.

Some of the earliest M&Pc's had a feeding hangup problem that was discussed some over on the M&P forum. I hadn't heard of it with a 40. The round just seems to nosedive into the ramp and not feed. It wasn't hanging on the lip, just the ramp.

I had the same problem with my 9. I polished, no luck. I lubed, no luck. I shot it a bunch, no luck. FMJ fed, hollow points would not. I ended up calling Smith and they said send it back. 7 days later I got it back with a new barrel, problem solved.

Try the lube and polish first. Good luck.

Munster

Have only had it for shy over a week. Didn't want to have to consider sending it back in so soon. Like you FMJ's feed but the HP's don't. I did notice 2 scratches along the top of the casing where it feeds into the barrel about 1/8th apart. Might have a small burr.

I'd go ahead and shoot a couple hunderd rounds through the gun, and if it still hangs up on the Hornady I'd try a different brand of JHP ammo. Also I aways "slingshot" my slide when chambering the first round, sometimes the first round doesn't want to feed just from slide stop release. Does the gun fire a mag full of the Hornady once chambered?

Sorry to hear of your problem.

But I would send it back to Smith and Wesson just as Munster did. This is a modern Semi Automatic. It should feed with all sorts of ammo.

I have had Sig's, Beretta's, never had a feeding problem. S&W should be no different!

Let Smith - Wesson deal with it.

BTW... I just purchsed a MP 45. If I have any problems with it, S&W can deal with it.

Hoping I have better luck, really like the way these guns feel, proof will be the range!

Best

Bob

It hangs up both either using the slide release and the slingshot method. Haven't had a chance to go out and shoot it. Darn Ohio weather just isn't cooperating. When I pull back slightly on the slide the back of the cartridge jumps into place and then goes into battery. Then the next round will dothe same on the next function test. I know I just need to get to the range and shoot it.

My 40c will do this with 165 gr commercial reloads. 180 gr commercial reloads and factory run flawlessly. The gun only has around 400 rounds through it, I'm sure if it doesn't smooth out in another 500 or so rounds it'll make the trip to Springfield.

Chances are yours will go back to Smith as well, I would try different weights in it to get a better idea of the problem.

Cheers,
Sam

Called S&W today and they said to send it back. Turnaround time would be approx 3-4 weeks. Not sure I want to be without my EDC for that long. If I had my gunsmith look at it would that void any warranty.

Maybe more rounds will help, I rather doubt it. I had a Colt Gov. that would jam on hardball ( about every 3rd shot ). Sent it back to Colt, back in the early 80's.

Sucks to get a new gun or anything and not have it work the way you want it.

I have a new MP45 fs. Have not fired it yet. If I have feeding problems, it will go back to S & W. To me, no excuse for having those problems. My friends Sig 220 feeds everything, including semi wad cutters.

If you do send it back, you will be happy you did in the long run. Help them stay on their toes regarding quality control as well.

Best

Bob

had my gunsmith look at it and he determined that the ammo was just a hair too short and was causing a necking problem. He's going to polish the barrel and feed ramp next time I'm out at the range. Tried some Reminton JHP's and they chamber fine though.

It's a problem with the magazine box and the spacing between it and the ramp. (Not sure how adding a new barrel would fix that).

Slide the chamber back with an empty magazine inserted and pus down on the follower and you will see the big space. So it's a low feed jam.

SHould not be a problem on any new MP.
