Question Front sight height on 40 Pro, And the rear sight height too. :)

I need to know the front sight height and the rear sight height on my stock M&P 40 Pro with a 5 inch barrel. The POI may be a bit low. I am still breaking it in. I would like to keep the stock rear sight and change the front. I prefer a narrower front blade. Hope someone knows.

Had the rear sight off to install Apex Tactical USB but forgot to measure it.

You can measure both right on the gun with a caliper easy enough.

If POI is low, you need a shorter front sight (or taller rear.).

Calculation is:

((POA-POI) x sight radious)/ distance to target. = change in front sight height required. ( Be sure all units are in inch's)
A simple file and some blue touch up works fine.

Dawson Precision makes a nice selecction for the M&P in different heights and widths.

All that said, be sure it's the gun and not shooters hold/actions.

Do you measure from the bottom of the slide to the top of the sight. Then measure from the bottom of the slide to the bottom of the sight cut out? Then subtract to get the sight height?

I spent all of last year fighting a supposed flinch. I was hitting low. Finally got adjustable sights for my M&P 9 Pro. Dawson Precision sights actually. Guess what. I am now shooting it with the POA and POI the same point. I am assuming it was Dawson Precision that made my flinch go away along with other trigger control problems.

I don't want to put adjustable sights on the 40. The front sight they recommended is too high and after adjusting the rear sight is high also. They first recommended a .305 height front sight. That didn't work. They gave me a .285 height sight. Much better, but I think I could have gotten along just fine with the .265 listed on their web page.

Default Dawson Front Site Height

You are right, .265 is the right height unless you like to cover the target. In that case the .285 works.

I am a bit confused by what you mean "cover the target". I always want the POA and the POI to be the same spot. (point of aim, point of impact) I use 20 yards as my zero range and depend on the ballistic of the caliber for up close and far away. I shoot USPSA. PPC shooters hold on the neck area of their sillouette target and hit six to eight inches lower in the 10 ring. Bullseye shooters often hold at 6 o'clock and want to hit 3 inches higher into a 6 inch bullseye. When I was in the Marines long ago thats the way they taught me to shoot a 45 acp. And one handed like a bullseye shooter. Seems kinda silly now.

Where does "cover the target" fall in that?

I'm getting a little confused also. If he wants to keep his stock rear sight, then .265 is way too high. It should be either .170, or .180 if its shooting a little high.
